Last night I posted an article featuring a video where the president of GEARBOX, Randy Pitchford, talked about the developmental process of the soon to be released video game, ALIENS:COLONIAL MARINES. As I was deeply meditating upon this video today at work instead of focusing on the super hot rush job that my boss told me to get done in an hour or “don’t bother coming in tomorrow”, the flood gates of fanboy perception were opened and I was bathed in a zen like awareness. I think ALIENS:COLONIAL MARINES will have an epilogue to the PROMETHEUS movie. Why do I think this? First if you watch the video that I have posted again for your edification, you’ll see at 2:35 in the video Mr. Pitchford begins to detail a meeting that the director of GEARBOX, Brian Martell, had with Ridley Scott in preparation for that game. This brings me already to my first question, and that is if you’re making a game based on the James Cameron ALIENS movie why would you really bother meeting with Ridley Scott? Was GEARBOX just being absolutely thorough in their research or was there something else going on? Second, at 3:22 in the video Mr. Pitchford actually makes a reference to the PROMETHEUS movie as a result of that meeting with Ridley Scott. Third, this game has been and continues to be billed as a “true sequel” to the ALIENS movie. So there already the line between video game and movie is starting to blur. Fourth and finally we all know that the original release time for ALIENS:COLONIAL MARINES was supposed to be Spring 2012 but got pushed up to Fall 2012. The reason Mr. Pitchford gave for this was…
Colonial Marines has been a dream project – a labor of love. We’re fully committed to our vision for the game. Creating deadlines is helpful to the process, but we do regret where it creates expectations that cause us to choose between changing expectations or compromising the vision.
So is the “vision” that Mr. Pitchford is referring to a last minute decision to throw an epilogue to PROMETHEUS in the game and make sure it is released after the movie is or is it just GEARBOX sincerely wanting to give the gamer a supreme gaming experience?
If there is a quasi cinematic epilogue in the game I suspect it would be the marines finding a survivor or two from PROMETHEUS in stasis inside the derelict space craft.
What do you guys think?
