2018's Aquaman was a huge hit for Warner Bros., grossing over $1.14 billion at the global box office (making it the most successful DC Extended Universe movie to date). Between the colourful visuals, focus on humour, and blockbuster action, it felt a lot like a Marvel Studios movie, and it sounds like James Wan plans to head down a similar route with Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom.
In the video below, Arthur Curry himself, Jason Momoa, dropped some hints about what fans can expect from the sequel when it arrives in theaters next December.
"We all learned something on the first one. It's exciting because I haven't made too many sequels. I just know that it's, even on the page, it's absolutely wonderful," the Dune star explains. "There is so much going on. I think the stakes are a lot higher. There's a lot of comedy. So, I mean, I giggled reading it. There's a lot of fun, and definitely the action's [bigger]."
Very little has been revealed about the plot of Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, though we were recently treated to a first glimpse of Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master (with a startling new look). Amber Heard will be back as Mera, as will Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Black Mantis.
Momoa, though, is just excited for fans to see how technology has evolved when it comes to how Atlantis is brought to life on screen. "I think just in the last three or four years, technology is constantly [evolving]...it's just moving at such a rapid pace that what we're doing with underwater [sequences], I mean, that's what made the first one so amazing. It's just gone on to a whole other level, so I'm excited for everyone because it's just a lot more heart. There's a lot more at risk."
While some fans might be unhappy with the mention of "a lot of comedy," there's currently no reason to think the humor will overshadow what makes Aquaman such a great character.
