Josh Brolin came close to playing the Dark Knight in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the actor has now opened up on what he hoped to bring to the table as the DC Extended Universe's Bruce Wayne.

When Zack Snyder stood in front of a packed Hall H and confirmed his Man of Steel sequel would be Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the filmmaker broke the internet. The movie wasn't to everyone's liking when it finally arrived in theaters in 2016, but the furore surrounding who would play the DCEU's Dark Knight was, in many ways, even more exciting than the clash between the heroes!

Ben Affleck eventually landed the part, but we know Josh Brolin (Deadpool 2) was among those considered. Talking to Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Brolin appeared to express disappointment that he missed out on playing the Dark Knight, and shared some insights into how his take on Bruce Wayne would have differed from what we saw "Batfleck" deliver.

"That was interesting to me. That was [Zack Snyder's] decision. That wasn't my decision. Again, because, like something that is set up to not work at all or to work flyingly. I like those odds. I like playing with those odds," he explained. "I'm like 'am I the guy who's gonna make it all fail?' By the way, who I didn't think was bad, but you know, you talk to Clooney and he's still joking about it. It wasn't his fault. He loves the nipple joke and that was all Joel. But he didn't do anything wrong."

"Again, that was before Deadpool 2. It would have been the older, more raspy, for lack of a better word. Honestly, that would have been a fun deal and maybe I'll do it one day when I'm 80."

It would have been fun to see what Brolin brought to the table as Batman, but everything happens for a reason, and had he played the Caped Crusader, he'd have missed out on Thanos and Cable. The latter is a role many fans hope to see the actor reprise in the MCU, while Brolin recently returned as the Mad Titan by lending his voice to the villain in animated series What If...?

If he was taller he'd be perfect. Way more believable than Fatfleck

I'd absolutely love to see Brolin tackle the role, his size isn't really an issue IMO. Faking height is the easiest task in filmmaking, all that matters is the look and performance and he'd nail that down to a tee.
Could also see him as Thomas Wayne.

But I'm just done with the super-edgy Batman rendition of Miller's works for now, the Battinson version was pretty great as both a dark and yet hopefull variant. So I'm happy for DC to embrace that universe more.
Introduce a Superman in his own movie series in that same universe, maybe Green Arrow and Wonder Woman and then start a Justice League the way it should have gone down the first place

@Blergh - I really hope that's gonna happen. All they need to do is take time to do it. I can wait until 2026/27 for a Justice League movie, if that means we'll get to explore each individual character properly first.

Next to a The Batman 2, a Superman, a Green Lantern, and a proper Flash movie would be nice. Wonder Woman and Aquaman are not necessary yet, since I think we'll both see them get a third movie in the current universe.

@bkmeijer1 - absolutely and the fact that every hero's films would have different tones is fine. You can have different levels of realism in your individual movies.

You could have had a Superman in Nolan's universe as well if you just did it right

@Blergh - if I didn't knew otherwise, I would've believed Man of Steel was set in Nolan's universe. His name was attached to it as a producer after all.

And I think the different tones of tones help sell the grandeur of the universe. It was thanks to Thor that I believed aliens could exist in the same universe as Iron Man, and it was Guardians of the Galaxy that sold me on that Stark could have a tussle without Thanos without it feeling weird.

Each movie introduces an element of it's own, and the eventual cross-over is thus more believable. The MCU and Arrowverse did it right, and I believe that's where the Snyderverse failed.

@Blergh - "Introduce a Superman in his own movie series in that same universe"

Just give me a hopeful Kal-El played by David Corenswet that's all I need lol.

@Blergh - At first I thought it was regarding his father. Interesting, but they would have been leaning a little too much into TDR at that point. Ben was fine, but we missed a golden opportunity with his "movie" parents for flashpoint.

Jon Hamm would've been my first choice, but Josh Brolin would've made a great choice as well. Both really have that Alex Ross look in my opinion

He woulda been great, but I think Affleck was the right choice.

He would of made a great Batman, imo. But then we never would of gotten him as this guy... and that would be a tragic loss

so with that said...

Well, he might've been a good Batman, but he was NOT right for Cable.
He did an EXCELLENT job as Thanos though.

I cannot see him yelling..."Why did you say that name?" Plus isn't his real life ex-wife Martha Kent (Diane Lane)?
VileBlood

Brolin would've been a great Batman. But it all worked out for him as he got to play one of the most iconic villains of all-time in Thanos and he dodged a trainwreck by not joining the awful Snyderverse.

I want to see him back as Cable, but more comic accurate for the MCU. Make him bigger and taller, with CGI today they can easily do that, and make his hair fully gray this time.

Brolin was always my choice for Bats, w/ Joaquin Phoenix as Lex, and Willam Dafoe as Joker.

He was great as Cable, and Affleck was great as Batman (for the most part).
Win-win situation.

I think Affleck was the correct choice but I love Brolin regardless. Perhaps as Thomas Wayne or if they ever adapt The Dark Knight Returns again down the road.
