Batman Beyond Will Be Back in 2010 - Plus LEEE777 Casts Batman Beyond!

The future version of Gotham City will be getting its Dark Knight again. DC Comics' Dan DiDio announced, "There will be a Terry McGinnis mini-series early next year. We’ve heard the fans, we’ve heard everyone’s interest. And right now we’re planning to put out a Batman Beyond mini-series in 2010!"

Cool news right? Growing up with Batman: The Animated Series plus Batman Beyond and all the creations in the Timm/Diniverse, this is just great news. Any of you readers who aren’t familiar with Terry McGinnis Batman Beyond, let me fill you in.

About ten years ago, Batman Beyond aired introducing us to the Gotham City of Tomorrow and the wild and amazing adventures of the future Batman!

Batman Beyond, also known as Batman of the Future, is an American animated television series created by The WB Television Network in collaboration with DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation as a continuation of the Batman legacy. It began airing on January 10, 1999, and ended its run on January 6, 2002. With 52 episodes spanning three seasons and one direct-to-video film under its belt, the series was then put on hold for the new Justice League animated series despite the network having announced plans for a fourth season. However, there was a short-lived spin-off, The Zeta Project. In The Zeta Project's first season episode "Shadows", there is a crossover with Batman Beyond; in this continuity, the story takes place between the episode "Countdown" and the series finale "Unmasked." Batman Beyond is set in the chronological future of the DC animated universe.

The pilot episode begins in 2019, where an aging Batman, equipped with a high-tech Batsuit, takes on the kidnappers of Bunny Vreeland (the daughter of Veronica Vreeland, one of Bruce Wayne's many girlfriends). During the battle, Batman suffers a heart attack which leaves him unable to fight, forcing him to betray a life-long principle by threatening a criminal with a gun. Because of this, Bruce Wayne retires the Batman persona, vowing never to revive it. It is implied by virtue of his continuing to fight crime long after he should have, and his retaining of the costumes worn by Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl, that even before this point something horrible transpired that caused Bruce to sever his ties with the Justice League and forbid his allies to ever again assume their alter-egos. (The events which caused all of this are revealed in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.)

The story then fast-forwards to 2039 in Neo-Gotham, now a futuristic megalopolis equipped with staggering high rises and hovering/flying vehicles. Bruce Wayne is now a recluse, living in bitter isolation with no companion but his guard dog, Ace. Terry McGinnis is an athletic 16-year-old high school student and reformed troublemaker with a deeply ingrained sense of personal justice. His first act in the series is to defend a fellow passenger on a commuter rail from a member of the Jokerz gang. After trying to defend his girlfriend from an entire gang of Jokerz, Terry is forced to engage in a high-speed chase which ultimately ends on the grounds of Wayne Manor, where a fleeing Terry runs into the elderly Bruce Wayne. Bruce and Terry fend off the Jokerz side-by-side, but the exertion aggravates Bruce's heart condition. Terry helps Bruce back to the manor and, after Bruce nods off for a bit, stumbles upon the entrance to the Batcave. He is chased out by a recovered and angered Bruce.

Terry returns home to discover that his father had been murdered, apparently by the vengeful Jokerz. Soon after, he finds out that the man actually responsible for the murder was Derek Powers, CEO of a merged Wayne-Powers (Bruce had foiled the merger repeatedly during his time as Batman, but evidently gave in soon after retiring the cowl) and his father's employer, because he possessed knowledge of illegal chemical weapons being produced by Powers. Terry "borrows" the Batsuit, intending to bring Powers to justice. Bruce initially opposes his efforts and vehemently demands Terry return the suit (going so far as to paralyze the suit while Terry is still inside it, which almost leads to his death), but Terry is able to convince him otherwise, and subsequently defeats Powers. Realizing that crime and corruption are running rampant in Gotham, Bruce offers Terry the chance to assume the role of Batman.

The Batman of the future is born!

LEEE777 - Well i love the news but how sweet would a Live Action movie by Warner Brothers be? Well here's the main cast that would be perfect below.

Milo Ventimiglia as Batman =

Good actor in Heroes and would steal the Batman of the future role hands down.

Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne =

Perfect part for the aging Bruce Wayne and if you don't know Michael Keaton he has done two little movies called Batman plus Batman Returns!

Mark Hamill as Joker =

Yep he needs a shot at the Joker of the future, after all the animated shows and Joker in the video games too, he deserves the shot of being the Joker on the big screen. Anyway who doesn't love Mark Hamill as the Joker?

Well hope you liked it Bat fans and bring on the mini series! ; )

Of course CRISPIN GLOVER would make the best present day JOKER and BRITTANY MURPHY as HARLEY QUINN! Perfect be it the next BATMAN movie or so or even SUPERMAX!

Milo could deffinately do a great job as Terry, and the rest of your casting is spot on! I too think Mark deverse to be the JOker on screen

However, I also think that Sean Gestl could pull of a pretty good Terry..he's 18 years old, in very good physical shape,5'9, and has studdied acting for 6 years, currently studdying acting at a very well recieved college and is currently working in the Greek Tragedy Medea...aka gestlmutant.

Just throwing that out there, lol

I remember reading that before batman begins was pitched WB thought of making a Batman Beyond movie. While I love nolan's batman I've always wondered how a batman beyond movie would have fared.
I hope this mini series comes to fruition, it's an awesome character that deserves more screen time.

LEEE777 - 9/1/2009, 4:53 PM
CRITIC @ Yeah but the mini series will be something like four animated movies maybe, an if it does good ratings no doubt the series will come back, after all look at FUTURAMA!

Another top animated show!

I can't disagree with any of them Lee. Great job.

For Terry, I also think Sam Witwer could pull it off.

And Kevin Conroy could also be a great old Bruce. He's the one who's always voiced Bats in the animated universe.

Awesome news LEEE777

I've been missing this show like crazy. When they did that episode in the JLU series, I thought that was the final bone they threw to the fans. But this would be great news. I wonder if they will pick it up from there, with Terry in his mid-late twenties, or go back to him at 18/19 years old.

Either way... gimmie gimmie

sucks for you Strangemann the show was the jam and only got better as it went.

talk about usually not agreeing with someone... I have to say stupify_me is right about Clint, he is much more age appropriate and has that grissly toughness.

I always thought if they did a BB movie, that Paul Newman would be the perfect choice for the elder bats. Alas, the time ran out of his hour glass before it could even be discussed.

Love Batman Beyond! I've got all 3 seasons and the Return of the Joker movie. Rabidly awaiting this miniseries. I wonder if DC will bring Paul Dini in to write it?

clint is a good choice too. i mean, i like bringing back the guy who brought us the first two batman movies, but hell clint eastwood is the freakin man!!!
Batmanknight
Batmanknight - 9/1/2009, 6:25 PM
The return of the Joker movie was probs one of the best Batman animated movies there are, its vioently amazing.

Eastwood would be Bad Ass as Old Batman. He was awesome in Gran Tornino, and its kind of the same character. A guy that used ti fight bad guys gets discovered by a kid and teaches the kid to be a better person

By the way @Lee i saw what you wrote on my Green Arrow story, and thank you for the complements and i just started writing the sequel for it.
dizzongster
dizzongster - 9/1/2009, 6:32 PM
Yeah, I've always said Eastwood would be awesome as Bruce in a Batman Beyond flick. Unfortunately he's done with acting now, and I don't think it'd be too likely that he'd come out of retirement for something like this.

LEX @ Cheers lol!

LAST SON @ Cool dude, glad ya liked it! ; )

GUYS @ Clint would make a great old BATS but unfortatly he ain't acting in movies anymore, after his last movie! I always thought he'd make a great Miller's DARK KNIGHT!

Oh yeah, anyone who hasn't seen my 116 AVENGERS CAST post and copy this if you want! =

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/001/news/?a=8886

As i put SPIDER-GIRL up i thought i'd show you these =

WILLARD HOLLAND from the OC would be a gr8 SPIDER-GIRL, of couse not in a regular SPIDEY movie of course lol, NEXT AVENGERS or something! ; D
