Big Hero 6!! Let’s just jump right in to it. This is a story of Hiro ( Get it.. Hero.. ) Himada, who after a tragic event, embraces his inner hero (there it is again), and goes head to head with a sinister plot that threatens the good city of San Fransokyo.
By that synopsis you’d think this is just your run of the mill super hero story. After all, menacing villain threatens city, hero comes to be, and poof.. there’s your story. There is much more to this than I expected to see, especially after the horrid shudder inducing Planes and Sequel. What you’ll find here is a heartwarming story of heroism, courage, and victory. When I say victory, it’s not the inevitable defeat of the villain, I mean victory of hardships and the things that happen in life. It’s actually quite refreshing and inspiring. For a kids movie this really tackles some heavy content, and gets pretty dark, but it does it unapologetically and with style.
I loved this movie from beginning to end, and that includes that awesome short that shows before the movie starts. As you watch the film you’ll sit there and swear you are watching a Pixar movie, and that only becomes more evident when you see the likes of Lasseter and Baird in the rolling credits. It’s a big “AH HA” moment.
Each character in the movie, especially the main 6 are all very well written. You feel like you know all of them, and you genuinely get invested in Hiro. But let’s be honest.. the big draw here is Baymax, he’s a wonderfully awesome and lovable character. He instantly invokes memories of Johny Five! I’ve probably dated myself with that reference but, such is life. The villain is good (oxymoron?) and will make you think of all kinds of previous villains from Doctor Octopus, to Amon from Legend of Korra. Although they took huge liberties from the source material, this reimagining and reinvention is a welcome one. One that I might dare to say is on par with, if not better than.. the Incredibles ( Shut yo mouth) yea I said it.
On thing is for certain. They are going to sell a LOT of toys. Myself along with my guests during the screening were instantly wanting the toys just watching the action happen. It brings you back to your childhood in a very awesome way.
Also, I want to live in San Fransokyo. The art was beautiful, the animation was fluid and amazing, and I loved the action. They really knew how to get you right into it, especially in 3D.
Not much to be said here, as I stated in the good section, I loved it from beginning to end. It was slightly predictable, but really, that is reaching. I won’t go much into that aspect of it because simply it will ruin the movie.
THE VERDICT
All in all, this is a must see. It might not top the Incredibles on your particular list, but it’s pretty darn close. If this is the kind of quality I can expect to see from Disney animation studios then I’m stoked for the next entry in their cg library.
