Aw poo, How to Drain Your Dragon 2 couldn't whizz past 22 Jump Street to number one, but it will be number two. Actually both sequels are outperforming their originals. 21 Jump Street in March of 2012 with $36.3M while its sequel expected to complete this weekend with $62M, while How to Train Your Dragon opened with $43.7M and its sequel is on pace for $52M. Not too shabby. Audiences seem quite pleased with both films as 22 Jump Street has earned an 'A-' Cinemascore and How to Train Your Dragon has received an 'A' Cinemascore.

In the world of films we at comicbookmovie.com actually care about, Godzilla could end up with the dubious distinction of being the first film to open with $90M or more in its first weekend and not reach $200M. Congrats? The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has now been in theaters for seven weeks and still won't reach $200M. Better luck next week. On the otherhand, 20th Century Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past will top the $200M mark in its fourth week. Woot, woot! Party at Bryan Singer's house! There will be no party for A-list Scientologist Tom Cruise this weekend. Edge of Tomorrow has been showered with praise from critics and moviegoers but the word-of-mouth just wasn't strong enough to lift the film from an underwhelming fifth ($16M) place finish. On a positive note: Edge of Tomorrow only dropped 46% in its second weekend while last week's box office champ, The Fault In Our Stars, had a cancerous drop of 61% with $18.5M.

It's been five years since Hiccup and Toothless successfully united dragons and vikings on the island of Berk. While Astrid, Snoutlout and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island's new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds. When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. Now, Hiccup and Toothless must unite to stand up for what they believe while recognizing that only together do they have the power to change the future of both men and dragons.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 stars Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T. J. Miller, Kristen Wiig, Kit Harington, Cate Blanchett, and Djimon Hounsou. It's set for release on June 13, 2014

Edge of tomorrow was a great movie shame about rexult. Maybe that money would have been better spent on a fladh or wonder woman movie

Maybe they should combine some of these films to maximize profits? Like so:

"How To Train Your Godzilla To Jump Street From The Edge Of Tomorrow And Land On The Amazing Spiderman Which Had A Fault In Our Stars 2"

@MightyZeus

The first Jump Street and Train Your Dragon weren't bad films, and neither are the sequels. Both were actually a lot of fun. The sequels look to be of the same quality. Even the reviews are good for both of them.

It's really just two good films competing with each other. I can't say I'm sad to see either make it to the top spot.

In slightly related news, Godzilla seems to be crushing the Chinese box office.

God, I hate Jay Baruchel's voice. Regardless, I've heard great things about Dragons.

I loved the first HTTYD I actually found it to be a better film then Toy Story 3. The flying scenes in the movie were absolutely gorgeous and beautiful that even watching on a t.v. you still feel the flying. So I am real excited to see the 2nd one.

22 Jump Street was great. Love to see Jimmy Tautro, and how they acknowledge the 'sequel' so much. Hot to train ur Dragon, I want to see it.

Kinda surprised given How to Train Your Dragon's family appeal. I don't understand how 22 Jump Street has such an insanely high approval rating. It was alright but it rehashed basically the same plot as 21 Jump Street. Ice Cube was its main saving grace.

@DoubleD: well, it's a sure bet that WB will report that it made it to $200m, certainly, regardless... Even if they have to shave some spare change off of their other releases. But dropping 50% every week can make earning another $9m a slow or even impossible process.

Let's say it makes $5m this week (the above weekend $3m plus around $2m for the coming weekdays): total $193m
Next week $2.5m: total $195.5
Next week $1.7m: total: $197.2
Next week $0.8m: total: $198
Next week $0.4m: total $198.4
Next week $0.2m: total $198.6
...$198.7....$198.75...$198.775... And soon they're down to looking under couch cushions.

But the dollar theater run should put them over the top, I'm sure.

But the point remains... Godzilla was epically front-loaded. Word of mouth did nothing for it.

Going to see both. Went to see How to Train Your Dragon on a whim when it came out and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. It's the rare animated film I really enjoyed as an adult and know I would have been obsessed with as a kid. Looking forward to seeing the second one when my nephew and niece come to town. Reports indicate that it's a very good sequel and there's a third on the way so this could turn out to be a great trilogy.

Saw 21 Jump Street with my younger brother and we both really liked it. I laughed more watching that than I did the first time I saw The Hangover. The second movie looks decent. Probably didn't need to happen, but it still looks like a good time.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 was actually really good. I think it was a top 5 release so far this year for me. Pretty sure it was the best animated release so far.

We saw How to Train Your Dragon 2 yesterday. Loved it! Excellent movie that thoroughly entertained in all facets. Laughed, cried and good action and visuals.

One couldn't pay me to watch 22 Jump Street. Could barely make it through the first one watching it via Netflix.
