Today, it was revealed that actress Kristen Stewart has been offered the female lead in Akira, a live-action adaptation, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are moving forward fast with this project, now that they have locked the director. Garrett Hedlund will play Kaneda, but there is still no word on who will portray Tetsuo. From Deadline:

"Kristen Stewart is in advanced talks for the female lead Kei in director Jaume Collet-Serra’s epic Akira, based on Katsuhiro Otomo’s six-volume graphic novel. The intention has been to make two films, each covering three books in the series."

Along with Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart, Gary Oldman is set to play the Colonel. Stay tuned for more details...
