BLEACH Producer On The Process From Manga To Live-Action Movie

Hollywood doesn't have the best track record so far of converting popular manga series into successful live-action films, and Bleach Producer Jason Hoffs addresses those fears.

BLEACH is a Japanese shōnen manga series written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. Bleach follows the adventures of Ichigo Kurosaki after he obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper (Shinigami, literally, "Death God") — a death personification similar to the Grim Reaper — from another Soul Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki. His newfound powers force him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife. - Wikipedia

Jason Hoffs is the Head of Production for VIZ Productions. He has been working in the film industry for over two decades. He recently participated in an interview with to discuss how the live-action project came together. A process that began all the way back in 2008. He also used this opportunity as a way to alleviate concerns that many fans of Bleach have about the Hollywood version.

Q: Now that Warner Brothers has acquired the rights to produce Bleach, what does that entail? What I mean is, what happens now? I know there's a lot of steps involved to make a big project like this come to fruition, but any idea when fans might expect to see this Bleach feature film? I understand that it's probably not possible for you to give us a firm release date at this early stage of the game, but can you give us some idea where things stand now?

Jason Hoffs: Our screenwriter, Dan Mazeau, will begin writing the film shortly, with the input of our director and the producing team. We hope to have a first screenplay later this year. We of course communicate with Kubo-sensei and the Shueisha team at key stages in the process.

Q: Was Bleach a project that VIZ Productions pitched to movie studios, or was it a situation where the producers approached VIZ Productions to get the rights? There was mention in the press release that a few folks involved with this project are big fans of Bleach.

Jason Hoffs: VIZ Productions teamed up with Masi Oka early in the process. Masi is a huge fan of Bleach, and a true otaku.

Early on, we had many discussions with Shueisha and Kubo-sensei about the creative direction of the film. Masi had worked with Pete Segal and his partner Michael Ewing on Get Smart, and Masi brought Bleach to Pete. The writer, Dan Mazeau had been on everybody's radar, so when he committed we were all thrilled. Once the team was assembled, we approached Warner Brothers.

Q: There's always some anxiety from fans when Japanese manga is adapted by Hollywood, that it will be... well, changed a lot from the original stories/characters/premise. Would you like to address this issue/concern from fans?

Jason Hoffs: Every creator, and every fan, has a picture of the property or a relationship with the property that is formed with the original medium. Creators and fans of manga are not alone in that regard. Any adaptation requires a change of format and of style.

In the case of manga, so much has to be condensed to squeeze the story into a feature film format. So even in the best of circumstances, it's a big challenge. Fans have been disappointed with recent manga and anime-based features. We have to learn from these examples, and keep working to do better.

We build a relationship between the creator, his/her team in Japan and the Hollywood creative team to create a basic common vision from the beginning of the process. There is an essence or quality in the original material that makes it attractive as a feature film, and the team tries to preserve and translate this essence into the film version.

Our greatest goal, and certainly the goal of the creator, is that the film should delight the fans. At the same time, the intention of the film version is to introduce a larger global audience to the property. It will always be a challenge to balance fidelity to the original work, while supporting the creativity and originality of the filmmakers in bringing their vision to the film.

Bleach Anime

Warner Bros. has acquired live-action feature rights to Tite Kubo's manga and anime property "Bleach," which will be adapted by "Wrath of the Titans" scribe Dan Mazeau. Peter Segal ("Get Smart") will produce with an eye toward possibly directing. Segal's Callahan Filmworks partner Michael Ewing will also produce along with Masi Oka and Viz Prods., a subsidiary of Viz Media, the English-language publisher of "Bleach." Jason Hoffs will produce for Viz, while Branon Coluccio will exec produce. WB exec Jon Berg will oversee the project for the studio. - Variety

NEL!

Okay, what part of the manga will they be incorporating into the live-action film? Just the Soul Society arc? Which would be perfect for, obviously, timeline purposes, but also because that's definitely the best arc of the entire series.

Still, I grew attached to some of the Espada, Nel and Grimmjow being some of my favs. It would have been nice to see them flying about, pulling WIN out the cracks of their asses.

Yes...put a pic of Rangiku Matsumoto in the article and see how many salivating comments you get from making that decision.

Why do they do this? Manga is already a shit load of retarded, over the top garbage as animation! This stuff can't be properly turned into live action! Never has and never will! The only thing you get is a product even shittier than the original product!

I really just hate Manga lol Unfortunately I had a roommate at one point who would watch so much of it so I gave it a shot. I have yet to see a compelling story or artwork that was any good whatsoever. The difference is that The Avengers and Batman had GOOD stories to draw from! Batman to this day hasn't been done right, but I have high hopes for Avengers because Marvel Studios hasn't let me down yet!!

i got a question why does hollywood go after the most asian influenced anime to adapt

when we know they will Americanize it like they did with dragonball and like they were doing with akira

hollywood there is plenty of anime that is already westernized and already have white leads

Trigun
Berserk
Cowboy Bebop

for examples

@SuspenseSmith- The right director, with a passion and vision for the property AND freedom from studio molestation would make all the difference!

Otherwise, it's business as usual...the movies' gonna suck.

I'm not an Anime Fan, but I think Bleach is one of the few that could make a fun movie.

Just don't fit to much stuff in it.
I'm just curious how their going to alter the Japanese names into English ones.

Personally I think they should start off with the Substitute saga and this should be the covered territory.

- Ichigo can see ghosts and hollows since he was a child and that he can never allow himself to stand by while people are being hurt due to the death of mom

- The sight of Rukia fighting off another hollow and then her later coming to his room to explain the basis of what a Soul reaper does

- Ichigo borrowing Rukia's Zanpakuto and becoming a soul reaper to protect his family by killing his first hollow but only show the missions that help explain more about being a soul reaper and the hollows.

- Rukia becoming Ichigo's mentor and showing him the ropes of being a Soul reaper due to her power being drained

- The introduction of Orhime, Chad, and Uryu but not necessarily covering all the territory of their episodes, however, the catch would be to introduce Uryu as a character relatively early in the film as already being a student since he kind of came out of nowhere in the anime.

- Ichigo visiting his mother's grave for the anniversary of her death and the Grand fisher battle as well as the Rukia getting a warning from another Soul reaper.

- Rukia's growing attachment to Ichigo and his friends due to spending so much time with them.

- A compressed version of the Quincy vs Soul Reaper rivalry and the hollow contest that causes the Menos Grande invasion and Orihime/Chad's gaining of powers.

As long as it isn't crap, like "Dragonball: Evolution," I'm okay with it.

Warner Bros. is typically good at making adaptations of stuff (not that they haven't had some bad movies).

So that gives me a little faith.

It was said about changes so be ready for alot. Look at the bombs of Dragon Ball Evolution, Street Fighter Chun Li and what was said about Akira. They will not learn from any of the mistakes but one can hope. I love Bleach and this could be a series of good movies and not a one hit blunder.

@MovieTheaterlad

I'm pretty sure the point was just showing what we COULD'VE had as opposed to what we WERE given. As I've said, I'm NO fan of Dragonball, but I've seen them and they suck, but they still didn't deserve the treatment the movie gave them if not only for the fanbase! In movie form with actual GOOD writers (unlike the first movie and the tv series) I think it really could be an epic ass movie! Then if it warranted sequels, they could grow and explore the next step which would be DBZ. They really dropped the ball on that POS movie. I just felt maybe you were a little harsh and quick on the draw with calling someone unnecessary names without thinking maybe they WERE going somewhere or maybe they DO have a point.

Can't stand Bleach. The first few episodes had my attention, then it got ridiculous.

An American Death Note would be perfect. Fullmetal Alchemist could never be properly done... but if it was I would be very happy. It's not hard to do a Dragonball Z, they just need to be true to the source. And Hollywood is NEVER true to the source.

There's just too much of Bleach to do it justice and incorporate it into one live-action film.

I do think Morbito would be an easy and nice story to adapt to live. One Piece has way too many characters that would be difficult to translate to live film. Bleach is bad enough, but One Piece characters have too many physical oddities as opposed to Bleach.

I liked the Death Note Live action film that was done, but have no desire to see a Hollywood version.

@ Ranger 14: So what do you think of this being the plot points for movie 1:

Sweetre15@ Only if it is going to be done in a trilogy. A stand alone film with that storyline would leave most people unsatisfied and wondering what the point is.

@Ranger14 : Well if ya know how much studios love money a trilogy is damn neared guaranteed lol...

But for the most part if the writer is competent enough he could make changes within those confines above and make it enjoyable enough for moviegoers and fans..

I love bleach but everybody knows hollywood goin f it up.I you think about it its alot of fights in the air so a ton of cg.i just think they are not gone spend the money but if they do it right it would be by far the best as long as the studio make it dark.

"Well if ya know how much studios love money a trilogy is damn neared guaranteed lol"

You mean like Dragonball...Golden Compass... and a list of others?

I see them with good intentions and then leaving us sitting after a crappy initial offering.
sweetre15
sweetre15 - 2/26/2012, 8:11 PM
@Ranger14: I mostly mean in best case scenario....

But yeah there seems to be a black cloud over certain attempts to start a trilogy hilariously enough a lot of those fails were from Fox and Lionsgate.though WB has their fair share of blemishes too.

I also hope that there is no executive meddling by hindering the film process in any way that either leads to convoluting the film or dumbing it down in the editing room.

I'm with GamerKT. My preferred method for the movie would be:

Ichigo running around killing hollows randomly, learning of the existence of Grand Fisher and his connection to his past... and then going off to kill that summabitch. Preferably he'd actually succeed instead of having it escape, then Byakuya and Renji show up immediately afterwards to take Rukia away setting us up for the sequel where they invade Soul Society.

They'd probably need to show us scenes of Soul Society in the first movie to give us a feel for the characters -- that way when it comes time for the series' villain to reveal himself it'll be a far bigger "wtf!"

Honestly, I couldn't stand this series until the Soul Society arc, but I think that's what'd work best.
Ace101
Ace101 - 2/26/2012, 10:26 PM
@Sweetre15 that would be the best approach for the first of a trilogy/quadrilogy/7-movies-ology. They should each be about 3hrs long, oh and the first one should end with Renji and byakuya taking rukia to SS.

2nd movie shld be everything (apart from all the useless stuff) up to just before the humans prepare to invade seireiti with the canon thing.

3rd movie shld be everything (apart from all the useless stuff) up to Aizen, tosen and gin's big reveal as baddies and their ascension into huceo mundo.

hopefully they make it really well, cause im a huge fan of masi oka and i have a feeling he will keep them in line if they deter from the path of epicness
