Here's some hump day news that should make manga/anime fans very happy indeed!

According to Deadline, Legendary plans to adapt Kohei Horikoshi’s mega-popular My Hero Academia for the big screen. This would be the franchise's first foray into live action, having previously been adapted for television and a recent animated feature, My Hero Academia: Two Heroes.

For the uninitiated, the story revolves around "a world in which 80% of humanity has developed some sort of special powers, known as quirks — not all of them super, and not all used for good. At its center is a young boy who obsessively follows the new heroes while having no abilities of his own."

No release date has been announced just yet, but we do know that Legendary's Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter will oversee the project, and Toho will handle Japanese distribution.

Considering Hollywood's track-record with anime adaptations? Nope.

@ComicsBeyond19 - To date they've only got one good one that I can think of and that's All You Need is Kill/Edge of Tomorrow.

Weak outcast with no friends finds power inside that makes him overpowered which leads to others gradually respecting him and friendship and to the top of his field. Has a genius rival that has a bad attitude, that push each other to greater heights of powercreep, with the rival always ending up one step behind.

And people complain about Hollywood being unoriginal. At least it isn't Black Clover.

@Reeds2Much - Have you watched the anime? Deku may be up there, but he's not the top of his field what-so-ever. There are several characters that constantly outrank him. Nor does he even find power inside of him? He's given that power. It has some similarities to other shows, but that doesn't mean it should be written off as a cheap copy.

@ComicsBeyond19 - he's not the top of his field

No, I've been reading the comics.

Naruto wasn't the top of his field, until he was. Goku wasn't the top of his field, until he was. Ichigo wasn't the top of his field, until he was. Luffy wasn't the top of his field, until he was. Saitama wasn't the top of his field, until he was. Deku's opening monologue in the first chapter literally says "This is my story of how I became the greatest hero of all time."

Naruto had the power implanted in him, Deku had the power implanted in him, Ichigo had like a dozen powers implanted in him ...

Come on. Hero Academia is at least readable, but there's more than "some similarities."

@Reeds2Much - congratulations you’ve just described every superhero ever.

@MrNegative - Certainly. Western comics are as unoriginal as Eastern. Injustice Superman is a copy of Hyperion is a copy of Superman is a copy of John Carter. How many times has Spider-Man fought clones at this point?

I just find it funny that people complain about how unoriginal Hollywood is when pretty much everything is inbred.

@Reeds2Much - Saitama has always been at the top of his field when it comes to power. That's the whole joke of the series.
OP superhero who isn't worshiped like OP heroes usually are.

@Reeds2Much - If anything eastern manga sticks to in the box thinking more then western does.
How many shonen anime revolve around a teen boy who goes to school and has a friend cast that includes the rival, the girl, the tough best friend, and the smart friend.
Most arch done in anime have enough so cliche they are considered tropes more then stories. Tournament arch.

@Reeds2Much - ...You're dropping the kind of jaded media criticism that makes my dingle tingle...

That said, one of the temporary respites from the "inbreeding" as you so accurately put it is the crosspollenation that happens when one media takes genuine notice of another. If there is some weeaboo Hollywood writer/director who knows how to translate shonen sensibilities into a live-action globaly blockbuster vocabulary, then we're probably in for a treat.

My Hero Academia wouldn't be my first choice (it still is kind of derivative of American super comics), but maybe it can open a door.

...I just really want to see a good 200 million dollar movie getting the super saiyan effect juuuuuuust right in live-action.

@Spock0Clock - I'm not sure that the surreal weirdness inherent to DB can really be translated to Live Action.
Then again we have the GotG films so... maybe?

@ComicsBeyond19 - Power inside isn't literal.
Op is right, I am a huge fan of the show, but he distilled it to a few sentences.

Ayyy! Huge MHA fan, so this is very interesting indeed. If done right, this could be incredible!

First Gundam and now this...

First focus on Gundam, deliver the goods, and then think about something else.

If done well, this could be really something. Anime's had a harsh time with Hollywood but i do trust that someday they'll nail it.

As far as i understand they're working along with Toho for this adaptation, Legendary's fb confirmed it, i'm not that familiar with MY Hero Academia but i've seen some episodes and they were really f*kng cool,as an anime fan i'd be looking forward to it.

If Legendary and Toho play their cards well with this one, it'll give me hope for them to keep working together, therefore they can keep working together for more Godilla movies.

I've never read it, but some people said that MHA and Sky High are quite similar, is it true?
If so, I think it could definitely work.
shadowspider9
shadowspider9 - 10/24/2018, 8:37 PM
@heisei24 - Not really. The only similarity is the very basic concept.
A world filled with heroes to the point they have public schools dedicated to teaching young heroes how to control there powers.
It's got about as much in common with Sky High as it does X-men.
shadowspider9
shadowspider9 - 10/24/2018, 8:34 PM
Oh good. It can come out just in time for the
Naruto live action movie
the Bleach live action movie
The One Piece live action movie
The Akira live action movie
And the dozens of other manga live action movies that Hollywood are just pumping out at record speed.

Wow such negativity at just a premise. Gross.
