Ant-Man To Be A High Tech Secret Agent

Ant-Man To Be A High Tech Secret Agent

Director Edgar Wright has finally given just a little insight into where his version of Ant-Man will be headed on screen.

Edgar Wright has been working the promotion circuit very hard promoting Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. Everywhere he goes, the subject of Ant-Man, one of Marvel's next movies after Avengers, comes up. Wright is usually good as keeping the answers light and repeating the same mantra at every interview. Vanity Fair recently did a very nice interview with him focusing on Scott Pilgrim and video games but they were able to get a few new nuggets of info on Wright's future adaptation. Here is an excerpt from that interview:

Vanity Fair: You’ve been working on the comic book adaptation for a while. Is it ever actually going to happen?

Edgar Wright: I hope so, yeah. I’ve written a script, and once Scott Pilgrim is done I’m going to work on a second draft. It’s something I’ve been passionate about for awhile.

VF:Yeah, but ... Ant Man? Seriously? Isn’t he like Aqua Man with lower self-esteem?

EW:Not at all! I had a copy of the Tales to Astonish comic from the early 60s, which has his origin story. And I’ve been a fan ever since. I think it’s a really interesting high-concept idea.

VF:You’re an amazing director, Edgar, but I don’t know how this is going to work. I mean… Ant Man? The guy who becomes an ant? Isn’t that like trying to stop a mob boss with a box full of kittens?

EW:I know there’s a big stigma attached to it, mostly because every movie about shrinking has been about people in peril. I think it’d be great to do a shrinking film about a bad-ass secret agent.

VF:Okay, I see what you mean. I was thinking along the lines of Honey I Shrunk The Kids.

EW:Even something like The Incredible Shrinking Man, which is a fantastic film, is about a guy in trouble. But this is going to be nothing like that. It’s essentially a high-tech spy heist film with somebody with a very particular power.

VF:The awesome power ... of an ant!

EW:Trust me, it’ll be much cooler than you think.

DogsOfWar-I have always struggled with seeing how this character can be adapted to the big screen without becoming campy. I have to say, after watching SPVW and hearing the latest comments from Wright, I think this movie has some great possibilities. It will not be the normal Marvel movie-more of a comedy that operates within the Marvel Universe but can be separate from it as well. As long as its Scott Lang and the Pyms are left to The Avengers, I'm in!

There's no doubt in my mind that Wright will do an awesome job with Ant-Man (which I too hope will focus on Scott Lang while perhaps exploring the origins of the Pym's via flashback or something) but his insistence that they keep the character out of The Avengers does piss me off...a lot! :P

This will be an interesting take on Ant Man for sure. I still don't like the idea of every super powered being, having to be some sort of government agent in order for the movie to work.

The entire concept of super heroes has always been interesting to me because they were outside the realm of reality. Once you try and make them believable, you loose a large portion of what made them appealing in the first place.

They were also a step above the government. The government used to call superheroes for help when the government could not handle the situation. Now superheroes seem more like soldiers ala YoungBlood and all the other crap that came from IMAGE in the early nineties.

@Josh - I think this will work well. No one, and I mean no one, has confirmed that Pyms will not be in The Avengers. Only Ant-Man has been ruled out. If they go with Scott Lang storyline, it will make sense. Even if the Pyms don't make it into first Avengers, Marvel would be silly to hamstring themselves by taking those characters in a different direction.

Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 8/14/2010, 10:24 AM
Dogs: I have been saying that all along about the Pyms. I wrote this in the GL Spoilers article.

As far as Ant Man not appearing in The Avengers goes. Everyone involved has stated that he will not be in the movie. There has not been one person involved with the film(nada, zilch, zip, zero) that has come anywhere near saying either one of the Pyms wil not be in the movie. Everyone involved has went out of their way to avoid using the names Hank and Janet. Some people should pay more attention to what is not said on occasion than what actually is. It's called misdirection and it works unbeleivably well.

Hank could have already dropped his Ant Man persona and moved on to Giant Man or Yellowjactet for that matter.

Fiege said months ago that Giant Man, not Ant Man was part of the original team.

Whedon also stated at Comic Con that they didn't have any other cast announcements that were finalized and that he could comment on at this time. Not thats the entire cast, but no more at this time. Thats two completely different meanings.

DogsOfWar - 8/14/2010, 10:28 AM
@Hawksblueyes - Agreed 110% The Pyms will be in Avengers. What incarnation and how much screen time are still big question marks. The beauty/frustration of Marvel's vast story lines is that there are a million ways to go. People should be careful on what is actually quoted vs inferring their own opinion.

Crap...

SCOTT LANG or don't bother... HANK's a must for AVENGERS I, with JAN!

HANK cameo only!

Not watching this if this is the sole reason we're not getting HANK & JAN!

DOGS/HAWKS: I hope that you guys are right! I suppose that they have only said Ant-Man so far which could most definitely be a red herring just to throw us off. However, the fact that both Fillion and Longoria have flat out denied having anything to do with the roles isnt a good sign either...but again, Jeremy Renner sort of did the same thing when the news about him auditioning for Hawkeye came out, so who knows!?

If the recent news that Hank and Jan wont be in the movie is true though, I think Marvel are really screwing up. The Avengers is the perfect place to introduce them and get people interested in seeing more about the characters in their own solo movie! Plus, imagining Giant Man fighting the Hulk is a far more exciting prospect than just seeing the big three along with Hawkeye and Black Widow IMO! (although that will of course still be awesome!)

Hawksblueyes - 8/14/2010, 10:43 AM
Josh: Not only have they failed to use any of Hanks alias' besides Ant Man, they have yet to deny that The Wasp would be in the movie. All we have on that is Eva Longoria acting overly ignorant about knowing anything about The Wasp. Even she never flat out denied having the part.

Krause would be great as Scott Lang!

what marvel studios should do is this.

the avengers-ant-man & wasp have cameos in the avengers maybe seeing him building ultron.

ant-man & the wasp movie-ant-man,solo movie is a no no.

the charactor isn't strong enough, its got to have the wasp in it as well.

anyway once his complete building ultron.

ultron turns on his creator.

setting the stage for avengers 2.

i think most hardcore avenger fans would be happy with that.

Ant man as a solo film would tank. But as a side character he is essential especially for infiltration scenarios.

Cameo yes in Avengers 1. Huge important roll... no! There's already too many characters that haven't been introduced that will take up valuable screen time just explaining who they are. I want tons of action, and not 30-45 min of back story for a bunch of guys who haven't been seen yet IMO.

Tankgirl @ I deciphered your comment the best I could, but who doesn't read comics?

Black widow's special effects in her fight scenes sucked big time in IM2. Was it just be or did it seem like blurred slow motion??
Nemesys
Nemesys - 8/14/2010, 11:56 AM
I agree with Tea and Integrity about the strength issue. I mean it would be pretty weak if his strength diminished proportionately with his size. But an ant-sized, super spy with normal man-sized strength could be really cool on screen.

For those not familiar with Marvel's Ant-Man, but know DC, think the Atom. Except Ant-Man also has the ant-telepathic-control thing going on too.

The only way this movie works is if he's both Ant-Man and Goliath/Yellowjacket. Also, his presence is required in the Avengers if for no other reason than to create Ultron.

Sounds awesome. SOTD and Scott Pilgrim were awesome, so I have faith in Wright to do this.

Hell, if it works out, maybe they can putt Ant-Man in Avengers 2.

I think this will be pretty cool, his powers aren't among the lines of Superman or Hulk but that's what I think will make it different.

Hawkeye's probably in Avengers because they need a unique superhero/villain for every film. Ant-Man will probably come a year later, they won't be making a Hawkeye film for a whiiiiiile.

can't f*cking wait for black panther & dr strange.

hope they make the black panther a crossover movie that leads into the avengers 2.

just picture this black panther,iron man 3,thor 2,captain america 2 & the avengers 2.

f*cking amazing line up,wouldn't mind seeing another hulk movie in their as well.
jazzman
jazzman - 8/14/2010, 2:01 PM
@deadpool72

that would be f*cking amazing line need to save up alot of money for that.

the only problem i dont want Marvel to give Dr Strange and Black Panther a lower budget. these two characters need a budget like Iron Man. Dr Strange with his magic need great special effects and Black Panther homeland Wakanda needs a huge set piece like they did for Thor Asgard in the comic-con trailer.

Luke Cage and Iron Fist need a lower budget. but imagine this a Luke Cage solo and Iron Fist solo movie then they can crossover for a Heroes for Hire movie all i have to say "Mo Money, Mo Money, Mo Money" :p
RedDevil
RedDevil - 8/14/2010, 2:26 PM
I always thought Heroes for Hire would make an awesome TV Show something I would watch every day.

Potential big budget films Marvel can consider:
Dr. Strange
Black Panther
Annihilation Wave (Nova)

love the power man & iron fist idea, maybe include the punisher with that now marvel have got the rights back.

its gonna be a shit hot couple of years.

can't f*cking wait.

i do need to see some captain america footage soon.
