BOX OFFICE: ANT-MAN Opens With Smaller Amount Than Expected But Passes $100M Worldwide

Early estimates pointed to Ant-Man debuting in North America with over $60 million, but stiff competition means that it will fall short of that. Disney are happy with the result though and the movie is already doing very well overseas. Hit the jump for all the latest numbers and updates...

Ant-Man has been a long time coming, and while analysts predicted an opening of $60 million - $65 million, it now appears as if the movie will finish somewhere around the $58 million mark. That makes it a flop, right? Far from it. While it falls short of the openings of Phase 1 origin story movies like Captain America: The First Avenger ($65.1 million) and Thor ($65.7 million), this figure is miles ahead of many other superhero films and by no means an indication of its ultimate box office success. With an 'A' CinemaScore from moviegoers and postive reviews, Ant-Man is a movie with legs. The problem Ant-Man faces is that Minions has proved to be a bigger threat than expected.

Deadline points out that Disney are happy with this result. It came in at #1 (their twelfth movie to do so) and marks the biggest ever live-action opening at the box office for both Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas. Overseas, Ant-Man opened in 37 markets this weekend and has earned over $56 million in the process. That might not sound like a lot, but it's tracking at +23% more than Thor and +44% more than Captain America: The First Avenger, so it's clearly going to more than make up for its lower than expected US debut internationally. "Overall, there wasn’t a place where it didn’t perform," says Disney's Dave Hollis. Wit a budget of only $130 million, Ant-Man already has a global haul of $114.4 million, and while it won't be bothering The Avengers just yet, theres no doubt that it's on course for a sequel if things keep going as they are now. What do you think?

Ant-Man was awesome! And no matter what, it will be a BO success. That's the most important thing. People calling it a failure can go watch FF and enjoy the bad acting, bad CGI, the fake lightning, the Thing with no pants and the blogger Victor Domashev.

And they said it won't be a no.1 movie

@venom0706...yup. Except that I will not be going to see it. I really enjoy hating the new FF. But I REALLY enjoyed enjoying Ant-Man! Good movie!

@Venom0706 this movie has almost pasted it's budget in the first weekend. It's a success my friend.

I'm a bit disappointed that more people didn't see it (Damn Minions! I really enjoyed Trainwreck though), but I'm hoping it has legs with word of mouth. Not a bad get given that it's the "cheapest" Marvel film ($130 mil, less than First Avenger and Thor). I'm predicting $400 mil, $450 mil at best.

I like what Faraci said: "Ant-Man has never been popular enough in 50 years to maintain his own title... but his movie opened at #1."

Lol, man the hate is real. We're talking about how well Ant-Man (mind you for the first true solo film in the MCU in a while) is doing in theaters and people still bring up FF? Why?

Saw it last night, I'd give it around a 7. I was expecting it to be funnier, it was kind of boring to me other than some scenes. And I'm not big on Marvel's comedy, but this movie needed more of it I think. They took out some of the lines from the trailers, and I'd say that was a mistake. Cause those lines made it seem less serious, and it should have been that way.

Just my pointless opinion tho.

Haven't seen it, but these numbers are good for an unknown hero fighting off twinkies.

Haven't seen it yet, heard good things though. Hopefully it'll be really funny. The trailers kind of made it seem a little too serious in some parts. I can't help but roll my eyes when a movie called AntMan is trying to sell me with seriousness.

No matter how good the movie will be, I can't help but wonder how much better it would've been in Edgar Wright's hands

It "fell short" by 2 mil. Not sure why Marvel would have placed estimates that high, given the stiff competition. Next few weeks will bring even more potential blockbusters. Crowded Month, July is!

@webheaded

Had Wright directed it, the movie would have gotten a RT score in the upper 80s-low 90s.
