Joss Whedon Explains ‘Scarlet Witch’ & ‘Quicksilver’ Interest For THE AVENGERS Sequel

Indicating that the super twins are still included, despite Quicksilver joining another Marvel franchise, The Avengers 2 writer-director Joss Whedon explains why he chose the speedster & Scarlet Witch.

In anticipation of the upcoming release of his critically-acclaimed Much Ado About Nothing film, Joss Whedon appeared on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show tonight. When Fallon anxiously asked the filmmaker about the highly-anticipated sequel to Marvel's The Avengers, Whedon said, "There are new characters. I already said that we’re going to have a brother/sister team, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, who were great mainstays of The Avengers when I was reading the comics as a kid." As to why he chose the mutant super-powered siblings, also known as Wanda & Pietro Maximoff, Joss explained that, "Besides the fact that I grew up reading them, their powers are very visually interesting. One of the problems I had on the first one was everybody basically had punchy powers. [Quicksilver]’s got super speed. [Scarlet] can weave spells and a little telekinesis, get inside your head. There’s good stuff that they can do that will help sort of keep it fresh." Further during the brief interview, Joss Whedon revealed that he's still penning the sequel and that the Maximoffs have yet to be cast, but "we’re doing that now." What do you think?

Marvel Studios already describes their highly-anticipated sequel to the No. 3 highest grossing film of all time, “Marvel's The Avengers,” as another “big cinematic event.” And expected to feature the reassembly of iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow & Nick Fury taking on a new unexpected enemy, new additions to the superhero team up of a lifetime are possible.

Expecting reprisals from Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” sequel is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. And set for release May 1, 2015, the film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to the sequel, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014.

...yet he can't mention they're mutant a and Magneto's kids. Awesome move by Fox, be even better if they used the same actor. Can't wait for DoFP...

I grew up watching Tom & Jerry. Their powers are visually interesting. The mouse eats cheese. The cat takes a beating.

@Canon108

Not everyone is going to watch X-Men:DOFP considering that not one single X-Men movie has made $500K at the box office.

Can Joss Whedon please explain to us how in the hell did these two get there powers in the MCU. are they S.H.I.E.L.D experiments??? are they In-humans???? please tell us!!!!!

Seriously, what in the hell is the point of having Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in Avengers 2? They just don't belong in it. They have no ties to the current movie group, Whedon can't acknowledge that they're Magneto's kids, that they're mutants, and can't use the names "Quicksilver" or "Scarlet Witch," only Pietro and Wanda.

So, seriously, what's the [frick]ing point in putting them in? Just because he thinks they'll be interesting and would "keep it fresh?" Yeah, so would Ant Man, Wasp, Black Panther, etc.

You know, people that would blend well with the Avengers currently...

"...yet he can't mention they're mutant a and Magneto's kids. Awesome move by Fox, be even better if they used the same actor. Can't wait for DoFP..."

Well, admittedly, the mutant thing is a bit of a pain in the ass, but the being Magneto's kids is almost completely irrelevant. The characters themselves went close to 20 years without knowing Magneto was their father and it didn't seem to be too big an issue for the readers.

@masterhater - 5/24/2013, 10:43 PM

"No ones going to watch Singers sh*ty xmen so it won't matter."

Yup, the same no-ones who made the first two hits, and God help me, made the third the most profitable in the series despite Singer's absence. The same no-ones who even showed up to see Origins despite it leaking on the web and being revealed for the train wreck it was. The same no-ones who helped put X-Men back on the map when they paid to see First Class.

Yup. No ones will show up at all. just like all those other times.

The only reason they want to add Quicksilver is so that DC looks like the copycat when/if they eventually make a Flash film. Now Fox will use him first in Days of Future Past lololololol Marvel got trolled while trying to troll.

"Joss is right. They were an integral part of the Avengers for most of the time. Hell Wanda and Vision were together for hellsa years.

I do agree though that other characters should come first (BP, Ms Marvel, Ant Man, Wasp)"

While you're totally right about Ant-Man and Wasp, Wanda and Pietro were Avengers long before either Ms. Marvel or Black Panther. As Ant-Man is off limits until Edgar Wright and Kevin Feige get around to casting that damn role (and maybe Janet, hopefully soon enough for Joss to sneak him into a shooting draft of the script), That leaves those two in the queue.

The only reason he is putty Quicksilver in it is to [frick] with DC when the inevitable on screen portrayal of The Flash appears.
Smooth move Joss you toss.

@captainamerica Why would marvel need to do that when they already beat dc to team movies? honestly I don't even understand why people think DC is relevant here. It is odd that Quicksilver suddenly appeared into Singer's movie. Funny how the world works.

You guys do know that both Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were members of the Avengers way before Black Panther and Ms. Marvel were, right?

I kinda wish Joss would just drop these 2 from the script, I think he mainly wants them because there brother/sister relationship would give him some fun character relationships to put in the movie.

I personally like the 2, but i would prefer other characters first such as Black Panther, Wasp, Ant-Man, Ms. Marvel, Luke Cage, or Wonderman. Even if War Machine or Falcon were given a part on the Avengers, that would be awesome.
