Joss Whedon Says THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Will Be An Origin Story; Confirms No Hank Pym

Joss Whedon confirms that the movie shares only a title with the comic book event, and will instead be a totally original story. However, it WON'T feature Hank Pym and it sounds as if he will be a creation of Iron Man's! Hawkeye is also set to have a much larger role in the "global" sequel. Now with video!

Marvel caught up with Joss Whedon (what follows is my own transcription of their conversation as it has yet to be released officially after airing just moments ago on their live blog) at the San Diego Comic-Con to talk all things The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Surprisingly, the writer and director revealed a lot more than any of us may have expected! After saying that he always wanted to use Ultron as the villain in a sequel, Whedon would go on to clear up some misconceptions that the title has caused. "Well, because there was a book called 'Age of Ultron' quite recently, a lot of people have assumed that is what we're doing, but that is not the case. We're doing our own version of the origin story for Ultron. In the origin story, there was Hank Pym, so a lot of people assumed that he will be in the mix. He's not. We're basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall by the wayside."

So, if Hank Pym doesn't create Ultron, who does? Well, Tony Stark seems to be the most obvious candidate, especially after Iron Man 3 showed that he had managed to create sentient versions of his armour. "We're crafting our own version of it where his origin comes more directly from The Avengers we already know about. It's a little bit darker than the other film because Ultron is in the house. There's a science fiction theme that wasn't there in the other one. Ultron is definitely something that evolves, so we're going to get together a couple of different iterations. Nothing can be translated exactly as it was from the comics; particularly Ultron." Finally, he was asked about the scale of the movie and which character he is most enjoying writing and revealed: "It's very much a global Avengers film. A lot of the movie has to do with their place not just in America, but the world. Part of the fun for me, definitely this time around, is writing Hawkeye. He did get possessed pretty early by a bad guy and had to walk around all scowly for most of the movie so now it's nice to actually have the character there and see him interact with the other guys." What do you guys think of these comments?

Joss, that's just retarded. Just have Hank in it as the go who created Ultron and working as a consultant and then have him suit up as Giant Man/Ant Man in the third one

No Hank Pym, So most likely his first appearance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be in Ant-Man, unless they have a post-credits scene with him in it.

Either way, the movie still will be good without him, the show must go on, at least we get to see Ultron.

Kinda upset but it's just a matter of seeing how they pull this off.... As long as Ultron is not a mystical being I am open to this idea.

It being an original story is great news. Hank not appearing is disappointing, but with marvel, everything happens for a reason. Can't wait.

I really don't understand why it's called Age of Ultron. The comic just came out this year and if they thought hard enough they could make a cooler name. But Ultron sounds cool.

Age of Ultron will immediately be followed up by Ant Man.. so I'm expecting Hank Pym to show up or at least be referenced to.

I'm sure we'll see how he's actually connected through Ant-Man.

DAFUQ, I guess Ultron will be created by WSC/SHIELD, they'll probably say the A,I's based on Jarvis.

I'm guessing this has something to do with Stark... I mean, it was his mask that was shown and then eventually formed into Ultron on the little teaser that was shown.

What the [frick]? If Stark makes Ultron I will not be happy, at all. Also, Ultron is one of the most interesting parts of Hank's character - you don't just take that away from him.

Tony is going to be the inventor of Ultron, no doubt. I'm really unhappy with this news, Ultron is a major part of Hank Pym's character and story.

Looks like Tony will create Ultron because he's Iron Man anymore and avengers will need a replacement. But when Ultron goes haywire, he'll be back in action.

What if Ultron came to be because of a virus corrupting Jarvis and the few newly built Iron Man armors?

Whedons got this. I don't believe he would have Ultron without Pym having some part in it. People need to be patient.

Iron Man 3 did allude to this, with the whole Jarvis controlling a bunch armors on his own thing without Stark's assistance.

Okay that's a big turnoff for me. Pym is Ultron's father! For someone that says he's a huge fan of the characters, he certainly doesn't mind shitting on them.

Kind of disappointed. What's the point of an Ant-Man movie if he won't be the one to create Ultron?

Thinking outside the box for a sec.. What if Stark develops Ultron, but later Pym modifies it and accidently creates the villanous Ultron? What if this story is just showing the origin of Ultron, him being created and actually used for good and with purpose. What if there's another villain or threat? What if Ultron DOESN'T become the villain UNTIL Pym comes in? What if the Avengers become too reliant on Ultron?

Idk. Kind of a shame though if Ultron goes crazy in this one without Pym being involved in any way.
