AVENGERS: ENDGAME Film-makers: Alan Silvestri's Score Should Win An Oscar

The Writers & Directors of Avengers: Endgame had high praise for the film's score in their DVD commentary track. Check out what they had to say about Silvestri's franchise-capping work.

The film-makers of Avengers: Endgame have already singled out Robert Downey Jr. as worthy of Oscar consideration. But now they are similarily praising Alan Silvestri's franchise-capping work for the film. While discussing his work on the score's standout cue 'Portals', they elaborated on his contribution and how important his work was to bring the scene to life.

Marvel thought so highly of the cue that they produced an official music video for it. And Marvel might be bullish here. They already tasted vast success at the Oscars last year with Black Panther, winning the very category under discussion - for Best Score. Do you think Marvel can win another nomination and Oscar for score this time around?

Check out the film-makers comments below and the official Marvel music video and let us know your thought.

Stephen McFeely (Writer): I think this, always meant to be a super-powerful scene, didn 't really come together until Alan Silvestri's score came in.
Joe Russo (Director): Oh yeah. This piece of music is incredible, and I think it could be one of the greatest pieces of music that Alan's ever composed. I think his score in this film is beyond exceptional.
Stephen McFeely (Writer): I would argue it should be considered for things.
Joe Russo (Director): I would argue the same, as I don't believe that Alan has ever won an Oscar.
Christopher Markus (Writer): Which is somewhat ridiculous.
Joe Russo (Director): When score can achieve this level of storytelling, it is transcendent. He is helping us tell the story here. And he's connecting so many different things all at once, it's staggering what he's doing. Only someone of Alan's skill could have pulled this off. And there is, I would  argue, maybe one other film composer on the planet at Alan's skill level.

Also Joe Russo mentioned that there is only one other composer who is at Silvestri's skill level. Who do you think he is referring to?

God damn right it should. Portals alone should win the Oscar.

Definitely should get a nomination at least. Great work from Silvestri. Haven't really heard another soundtrack do the work he did on that.

I think "The Real Hero" is the standout track to be honest. Portals is just another rendition of the 2012 theme

@Nightwing1015 - It's much more than that, come on. The entire build-up to the rendition is amazing.

@KingLeonidas - Oh yeah I agree, the buildup is great and the score is epic. But the most original and memorable track in Endgame is The Real Hero in my opinion.

@Nightwing1015 - The Real Hero is just a rehash of his Cast Away score.

if there is a piece of music that sums up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, its this...beginning with "on your left" and the slow reveal of all the heroes that died the previous year making their grand return (with a goddamn army in tow, and Spider-Man is alive!), a story of 11 years is coming to a grand conclusion...Earths Mightiest Heroes are finally unified against the greatest threat they have ever known and then the AMAZING Avengers theme finally kicks in, the most triumphant it has ever sounded, I was in utter awe at this point...(I turned to my brother and said, Caps finally going to say it...there has never being a better)...."AVENGERS"....the music stops...Cap catches Mjolnir..."Assemble"...Silvestri's score couldnt have been any better, it was as good as his music from the iconic culmination scene of Back to the Future

@dancingmonkey08 - The entire score is some of the best work in Marvel.

@dancingmonkey08 - My theatre went dead silent when Cap said "Avengers..." We knew what was coming next.

It made that moment all the more epic because the roar from the audience after that was ridiculously loud.

It's a decent score and amazing by Marvel standards, but it isn't Oscar worthy IMO. It doesn't even come close to Black Partner's score.
KingLeonidas
KingLeonidas - 8/4/2019, 2:10 PM
@BiggerLuke - I personally think it is better and even more deserving of Oscar consideration than Black Panther.
Kumkani
Kumkani - 8/4/2019, 2:38 PM
@BiggerLuke - I generally think it's good enough for a nomination, but I agree it's not as good as the Black Panther score.

This article prompted me to listen to a few tracks from both scores and the immediate thing I noticed is that while it's effective enough emotionally, the Endgame score for some reason doesn't sound "rich" or "full". It sounds very light and thin, and I don't know if that's the way it was mastered or not, but it doesn't have that weight to the sound.

The Black Panther score really stands out not only for being insanely unique and catchy (combining African/Afrofuturism, hip-hop and classical music), but it sounds "full". Maybe it's in Ludwig's background as a music producer for hip hop artists but he brings a different mindset to scoring. Some of these tracks have these wild, chaotic drums, really deep and heavy brass and a choir or chanting along with it. And it sounds good because the melodies are great but it also has this richness to it that I don't think any other superhero score I've heard really has. It's not just well composed, but it's amazingly mastered.

@BiggerLuke - Agreed. But this argument risks falling into the same old trap of comparing two things that aren't/won't be in competition with each other, hence moot.

“Also Joe Russo mentioned that there is only one other composer who is at Silvestri's skill level. Who do you think he is referring to?”

Who else? John Williams of course.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 8/4/2019, 2:32 PM
@nhoj3 - Yeah, John Williams is the most likely. The only others it could be are Elfman, Morricone or Zimmer.

If you ask me, the most underappreciated score in the MCU is the one for the first Thor film. What Patrick Doyle was able to do with a few notes played over and over was pure magic.

Mmmm, no. Very good in the film but I don’t know about Oscar worthy.

Silvestri's an okay composer and I definitely wouldn't give him the Oscar for this, not when a superior soundtrack like Dark Phoenix is on the loose. Wish that music had been for Endgame. Silvestri's mediocre score would better suit DP, I daresay. I mean, there are just a lot of finer composers and scores around that make me wonder Why Marvel doesn't get some better composers than they generally do.

Yes!

And while at it, screenplay and script should win oscars too.

Those one liner kiddie jokes and plot holes don't write themselves .... Or do they? 😕

Also, the film totally deserves best movie oscar, pinky swear thats how I feel like.

It certainly deserves a nomination as it's truly fantastic and one of the best of the year, but not sure it deserves to win the Oscar. Not sure if At Eternity's Gate is in the running, as I know that came out later in Mexico, but that one is my favorite so far this year.

It's not oscar worthy.
Portals is great. But i can't say anything else hits me hard.
Every other track feels generic apart from maybe Tony's funeral scene.
None of the MCU movies have managed to belt out a great score (ok maybe Black Panther, maybe).
If anything an oscar should be going towards Hans Zimmer's score for Dark Phoenix (even though the movie suffered hardcore). I felt more emotion and thrills in that than i did with the entire mcu scores put together.

Damn right! The Avengers theme is one of the most iconic and memorable themes of the last 10 years and has gotten no recognition
THEDARKKNIGHT1939
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 8/5/2019, 7:58 AM
I love the Avengers theme but for the score as a whole, it's pretty repetitve.

Also, his Real Hero track is just his Cast Away score modified. Again, I love that theme, but it's pretty lazy of him.
