We have a lot of reasons to be excited about Avengers: Infinity War but chief among them for many fans is the fact that Earth's Mightiest Heroes will be teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy. It's a pairing we've been waiting to see become a reality for years now but with quite a few years having passed between the events of Vol. 2 and this movie, will we even recognise the beloved team?
Yes, but that doesn't mean the team hasn't undergone some alterations (and not just because "Groot has grown" as co-director Joe Russo pointed out). "I think changes are about chemistry and about camaraderie and the fact that they’re closer, and they’re tighter, and they’ve been doing it for a while," Anthony explains. "That’s, if there’s any change, it’s in that when they may or may not intersect with the Avengers in this movie, they have cemented their chemistry as a team."
Joe then interrupted to note that "The relationships have deepened" and Anthony hinted at what could be a classic hero vs. hero battle the first time the Guardians cross paths with The Avengers. "And they would stand in contrast with the other teams," the filmmaker teased. "Potentially."
We'll have to wait and see but the Guardians will definitely get a lot to do here according to Anthony.
"They have a great role in this film. Everyone is interwoven in this plot in a way where they have an emotional connection to the story, and are emotionally affected by the stakes of the movie. You can't tell a movie with this many characters and not have each of those characters show up and honor them from the different franchises if they are not motivated to be there, if they are not in life or death circumstances, if they are not fighting to save their belief system or their way of life."
