Clark Gregg Talks About Playing Agent Coulson In The Marvel Cinematic Universe!

The actor talks about playing the S.H.I.E.L.D agent throughout the Marvel cinematic universe, how he connects the characters together and his role in THOR! Check it out...

On Getting To Play Agent Coulson Throughout More Than Just The One Movie:

"I've been acting a long time. And every time you get excited, you hear, ‘Guess who’s playing Coulson in the next one!’ It was this little part, but something worked. They needed a real person as the face of S.H.I.E.L.D., and every time they ask me to be in another film I’m like, ‘Really? Fantastic! Okay!"

On The Importance Of The Character:

"I feel like I represent what connects the Iron Man and Thor worlds together, and also what connects those worlds to the audience. Coulson's a smart ass, but has clearly been trained in a serious way to have a spot in Nick Fury’s organization. Yet, to me, it still feels like he's a guy who goes home."

On How He Felt About Taking On A Much Larger Role In THOR:

"I was intimidated about taking my character into the world of ‘Thor.’ I wanted it to feel like the same guy the audience was getting to know…but instead of being exactly the same, I got to unveil more about Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D. For me, that’s the fun part about showing up for work. I get to find out where they’re going to take this guy."

With an all star cast which includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Rufallo as Bruce Banner, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, The Avengers is set to be released on May 4, 2012!

I think they created a new character to keep the surprise of SHIELD until the end of Iron Man. I mean, to the people who aren't really comic fans, but know of the comics (which, I mean, let's face it is most of the people seeing the movie) probably wouldn't pick up on Coulson saying the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division as SHIELD.

Heck, I had to hear it once or twice again to make sure that it could stand for SHIELD. So, in this case, I don't mind them creating a character. And he seems to fit right in.

Guys, who's to say there isnt an agent Coulson in the comics? SHIELD is an organization with possibly thousands of members, just because Coulson isnt one of the ones who've been named in the comics, doesn't mean he isn't there

When I heard Coulson tell Pepper who he worked for, I about missed it. Because my amnesia kicked in and I actually forgot that S.H.I.E.L.D changed the acronym a long time ago from Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division. It took about 2.487235 seconds for it to register and I pooped a full grown chicken. Coulson is the face of S.H.I.E.L.D even though Fury gets the credit.
@movietheaterlad- you may be a genius.get that checked out.best idea for new show this year.

One of my fave lines from IM2:

Agent Coulson: If you try to escape, or play any sort of games with me, I will taze you and watch "Supernanny" while you drool into the carpet.

"Yet, to me, it still feels like he's a guy who goes home." - yes, It realloy feels like it. The nice part of the character is that he's always so calm, but still could kick your nuts in no time. Like a Jack Bauer without cocaine.

@AlexdoxA - No, he wasn't, but Nick Fury's name and shield appear at the beginning when they're tracking Banner.

If I'm not mistaken, and I've been known to be from time-to-time, Coulson IS in one comic series, "Ultimate Spider-Man". When SHIELD first finds out about Spidey and the Sinister Six he's one of the agents brought in trying to capture Spidey. I think.
