Joss Whedon did a lot of things right in
The Avengers, but probably his biggest accomplishment was successfully bringing together so many different characters from different movies, and giving them all (well, pretty much all) sufficient development and screen time to ensure his audience were completely engaged in everything that was happening to and around them.
