RidiculousFanBoyDemands Doesn't Review THE AVENGERS: NO SPOILERS

Well, after hearing everyone gushing about The Avengers, I called up a friend who writes for the Free Press and begged him to take me to a press screening.

Review Opinion

Filed Under: Avengers

After being taken to the cleaners with bribes, I waited all day anxiously anticipating if he could score another pass. Much to my delight he was able to, and I was able to witness this spectacle (in 3D), and here are my reactions. Again this is no review just, my reactions.

- Action scenes are amazing and satisfying. Nobody is short changed when it comes to fighting.

- By far the best Marvel movie, and it's not even close.

- Everyone is given their due when it comes to fighting save for one character who I felt was a little under used, but he was in one of my favorite scenes and had one of my favorite lines so I am cool with it.

- It took a little while to get going, but when it did I was completely immersed.

- For all intensive purposes this is a comic book movie fans comic book movie. Meaning that when you watch it, you get the same vibe of reading a comic book, or watching Earth's Mightiest Heroes. It was made for hardcore fans of comics, and they will appreciate the care Whedon gives to this movie.

- Not a single bad performance. Some of the lines (not many) were a little cheesy, and delivered awkward but they were so few and far between you didn't pay them much attention, and it didn't take you out of the movie.

- The 3D was terrible. If you can, avoid seeing it in 3D at all cost.

- The final 45 minutes or so, is probably the most fun I have had at a theater in a long, long time.

- The highlight of the film for me is how Joss has all these characters interact. He does a great job of not forcing dialogue or banter, and the interaction of the characters is much more organic than I would have ever anticipated. That is where he deserves the most credit.

- My only gripes would be the pacing at times, it does become a little predictable,some of the camera angles are a little jarring and out of place, and some of the jokes fall a little flat. However, it's nothing that makes the movie terrible, and it's something that is so few and far between that most won't care.

- This is definitely Marvel's The Dark Knight, but it will be interesting to see how critics react to it. It's not an overly deep story, and I'm sure many will write it off as another fun "popcorn" movie, but Joss Whedon deserves to be commended. He took a very silly premise, with silly looking characters and made it completely work, and created one of the best Summer Movies in recent memory. You can tell he really cares deeply for the material, and his passion is definitely on full display.

- I won't say this will be the best comic book movie of the summer, but it will definitely be the most fun.

- This is definitely up there with the best movies based off Marvel Characters, it is better than Spider-man 2, and for me is a toss up between this movie X2 and First Class for the greatest Marvel character movie of all time.

- Now if I had to guess the Tomotatometer after watching it I would definitely say 90%. Even though it is by far the best of the Marvel Movies I don't think it will beat out Iron Man's rating. Comic book movies are judged a little more harshly now then they were just four years ago (thanks to the stellar Iron Man, The Dark Knight, First Class), that critics now have higher standards for reviewing them. Which is actually a really good thing. Also I firmly believe this will make a billion plus worldwide.

Overall really, really well made movie. Definitely worth checking out on the big screen, but not in 3D.

I say not a review, because of the embargo, even though a lot of these points can qualify as "reviewing" it.

This was all I needed to hear. Yeah it's nice seeing people lose their shit over this film, but this is the first time I've heard word of it that really fleshed out what might make the movie not so stellar absolutely flawless.

Thanks for the nonreview!

Not even close to what?

Going to see it at the midnight showing, not in 3D. Can't wait. Yeah, from the trailers I haven't really cared for some of the camera angles like the ones shooting up their nose, but it's not something I'll hold against it.

@JasonBourne

People who have seen the film (critics included) have confirmed that the Hulk basically steals the show, which I am absolutely delighted to hear.

It's nice to know Marvel's finally go a version of the Hulk that people really seem to dig.

RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 4/15/2012, 12:25 PM
I'm not going to spoil anything, because that would be a huge dis service the fans.

@JasonBourne

The Hulk gets enough screen time, and he definitely has some of the most memorable scenes. He is my favorite incarnation of the character, and Joss has a very clever take on him. I mean he isn't in a big portion of the movie, but his parts are so satisfying it will leave you not caring. And Ruffalo for my money is a better Bruce than Norton. He's much more comfortable with his alter ego, and like I said Joss is very clever in the way he writes him.

There is a mid credit scene, and it is very interesting to see if it ties into the solo films as well.

@ThreeBigTacos

Iron Man which in my mind is one of the best super hero films made (not a top 5 but definitely a top 10) and this movie is much better than it in terms of scope, acting, and action. I think RDJ gives a better performance here, but Hiddleston out acts them all. That's not saying that anybody is terrible, Hiddleston is just that good. He's not over the top, it is a very subtle performance.

However the hulk steals the show in the climax, and is in one scene that will leave fanboys just geeking out, and I expect to be one of the most memorable internet meme's of all time.

I didn't get to see the new scene that was allegedly filmed either. Just the standard mid credits scene that everyone has been privy to.

Thanks for the "non-review"! It's nice to hear an opinion that isn't praising the film to ridiculous lengths, but points out the strengths and weaknesses of the picture instead. All the more exited now, thanks!

Does Captain america get enough action and is it power>agility like TFA was...also, do they deal w/ his beef w/ iron man well?
RidiculousFanBoyDemands
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 4/15/2012, 1:10 PM
@Cap

Captain America is shown to belong, and can definitely hold his own in a battle. As far as his powers are concerned they are portrayed very similar as The First Avenger. He's very quick and agile, yet he has limitations that the others don't.

As far as his interaction with Tony, to talk about that will give away a couple of spoilers and divulge some of the movies more memorable lines. The crux of their "feud" is that they are two very different people, but at their core they both want the same thing. My friend put it best when he said they don't see eye to eye because they can't or won't fathom what it is like to walk in the others shoes.

@IronMan

She has a good scene with Tony at the end of the movie, but there wasn't much time devoted to her character. Gwenyth is wonderful as always but she isn't really given much to work with.

Also before anyone ask Jane is referenced in the movie, Natalie Portman is not in it, but it was handled well.

There are a few question I have the I'm not sure I want you to answer lol

I hear Thor isn't in the movie as much... And also that Cap doesn't say Avengers Assemble.
That would piss me off.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 4/15/2012, 2:12 PM
@HumanTorch

I don't want to answer either of those right now. But I will say, minor things will not upset you. During the last 45 minutes your brain won't be registering what is not in it because you will be so immersed. I was surprised by the things I overlooked because it was just that damn entertaining and well made that I just didn't care.

ModernAvenger89 - 4/15/2012, 3:19 PM
Great article. I just have one query. Would you be able to go into detail on the 3D and why you disliked it. My friends wanna see this in IMAX 3D. But if it ruins the film I don't wanna ruin the experience. Should I see it in 2D?
RidiculousFanBoyDemands
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 4/15/2012, 3:31 PM
3D isn't my cup of tea, and I found it to be a little distracting and outside of the final battle really doesn't work.

In my opinion the film is very well written, acted and the action is really well done, that 3D doesn't enhance anything. All it does is distract you from the really good aspects of the film (like the writing).

It doesn't ruin the film, it's just not well done. You will still really enjoy this movie even in 3D, but if you don't view it in 3D I feel you will get more out of the story. That is just my opinion though.
ModernAvenger89
ModernAvenger89 - 4/15/2012, 3:44 PM
Thanks. Was just making sure my first time (watching The Avengers ;) ) was perfect haha. Didn't want the quality to be bad and ruin the experience.

Oh one more thing sorry. Are you a fan of Whedon's previous work Buffy, Angel, Firefly etc etc. I love Firefly/Serenity. Gonna Netflix Buffy this week, never seen it.

Are there any similarities between his shows and Avengers. Cause when he was announced as director and many people bitched. I said to my friends. "Have you seen Firefly? The way he handles multiple characters in that is great". I always thought that his strongest points were dialogue and character.

Last question I promise haha. Are there any NERDGASM moments in the film?
sinister84
sinister84 - 4/15/2012, 4:53 PM
here's a question: after watching "the avengers", what do you think of all x-men movies and all spider-man movies??? they're crap, don't they? what about batman begins and tdk?
RidiculousFanBoyDemands
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 4/15/2012, 5:34 PM
It's going to all boil down to preference sinister84. I enjoyed The Dark Knight more because I found it to be a bit more unpredictable. That's no slight to The Avengers, it was a great, great movie, and has the Dark Knight beat on the superficial things. If I had to rate just the Marvel character movies I would say they go somewhere in this order.

X-Men 2
The Avengers
First Class/Iron Man

Like I said it will all come down to taste. I just liked the story X2 told over The Avengers, but the writing in The Avengers is superb.

@ModernAvenger

Truth be told I am not that familiar with Whedon's work. However, the tone and writing is different from the solo efforts. The dialogue is a bit more crisper if that makes sense, and it feels like the characters have purpose.

As for nerdgasm moments, there are plenty. My favorite happened between Loki and The Hulk, but every character will give you a "OH DAMN!" moment. You will not be disappointed.

@knossis

I really enjoyed X-Men first class, and if I had more time I would go in depth about what made it a really good movie for me.

The score was surprisingly good Benjamitesandwich . Not super memorable, but it's not cheesy and the final battle is scored masterfully. It doesn't distract and there is only one scene where it was a little over the top.

@Alexandre

I went in with moderate expectations and was pleasantly surprised. The story isn't ground breaking by any stretch of the imagination, but it didn't need to be. Everything worked better than fans could have hoped for. And the gif is much appreciated :). I have a feeling you will really enjoy it. The story may not have the complexities of a Batman Begins, Dark Knight or even X2, but it more than makes up for it in sheer scope. And that final battle scene, is well worth the price of a ticket by itself. Marvel fans though, I highly expect you to lose your shit over this movie, and I don't have a problem with it. Use all the hyperbole you want, this is the movie you have been waiting for. Enjoy it guys. Just please don't get pissy at reviewers or fans if they like The Dark Knight more. Once you see it you will realize it is all apples and oranges. Both are made with great care and respect towards the fans.

"Enjoy it guys. Just please don't get pissy at reviewers or fans if they like The Dark Knight more. Once you see it you will realize it is all apples and oranges. Both are made with great care and respect towards the fans."

This! A thousand times this! TDK was great because it closely followed the tone of the original work. It touched on many important concepts: batman is the world's greatest detective so the plot must have twists and turns, his rogues are insane and are complex, and therefore must conflict with batman on a psychological or moral level.

Avengers was a book that was always about a team coming together despite their differences to fight against threats that are of a grand scale. The slower, less action-packed moments of the comic books, while often light, focused on the interpersonal conflicts and relations of the team members. And from what you're saying, the film is well made and follows this tone too.

Totally different tones and styles to both. So again, apples and oranges! As long as both movies are well made, it'll all boil down to preference.
