Seamus McGarvey On Filming THOR-Credits AVENGERS Teaser In 3D; Stars Threatened To Exit

Speaking at The Irish Film & Television Network (IFTN) recent event, Marvel's The Avengers Oscar-nominated cinematographer Seamus McGarvey further discussed his contribution to the highly-anticipated superhero specticle. Rehashing on the challanges of shooting the post-credits sequence of Thor in 3D, as an Avengers test, and why director Joss Whedon chose him, check out an interest tidbit he drops down below.

"We shot a little trailer for [The Avengers] that went out at the end of 'Thor' and we shot it in 3D. It was like pulling teeth. I just thought 'it has been lovely to shoot these two days but I'm going to get fired' because it took so long setting up each shot and the director was just going crazy. Not only that but Samuel L. Jackson & Stellan Skarsgard, who were in the piece, said 'if this is how the movie is going to be then we're not in'. It was that serious," he said.

"I think [I got the job] really because Joss didn't want some old DP who's done a million of these movies in the past coming around saying 'look this is how we do it'. So he wanted somebody who was probably as hungry for it as he was and I think that's why he got me involved. I was very very keen to be involved, and I'm keen to learn." McGarvey also reveals he took a three-week crash course in 3D admitting it was "terrifying", but helpful in the long run.

"For me it was a different challenge. Normally I work in a very visceral, down to earth way, and everything that is in front of me gets photographed. What was really exciting about the 'Avengers Assemble', especially seeing it last night in the premiere, was just this whole new world revealed to me that had been created in computers and visual effects. The notion that there's a fellow cinematographer working alongside you, namely the visual effects supervisor, who's enhancing and embellishing the drama with photo-real effects is really enjoyable," said McGarvey.

@PartyHard I hope so. I really do. Let's go IMAX with everything and get rid of 3D. I much prefer that idea.

I think all the dislike for 3D is pretty funny. Just like how color ruined movies and below that how audio ruined the moving picture. Stop trying to end advancement in entertainment. If you dont like it dont go. Just sayin.

Talkies will destroy cinema!

And then video will kill the radio star.

But then again, even Hitler was once TIME's Man of the Year.

@VGK327

It's funny that you think 3D is the future of film making, and not just a fad that has come and gone before.

One bad day and the actors are ready to walk....there's your average actors loyalty for you! Don't believe a single word out of any actors mouths. They are acting...by definition they are liars by trade.I so sick of the publicity machine that surrounds movies!

VGK, your comparisons are like night and day. Color and non color is HUGE difference to movies. Not having 3D in a film isn't. It's either "enhancing" the movie for some people, or annoying. That's all it is. It's an accessory to the film, not a game changer lol. Now if you would have said real 3d, as in the characters are standing in front of you outside of the screen along with the landscape/sets then yes, that'd be a game changer, a technological advancement (without the glasses). Putting an exta wheel on your bike to make it a trike isn't advancement lol, just an add-on that isn't really needed but is optional.

vhs to dvd to blu ray. Those are technological advancements, not an add-on 3d pop up. I hope you know the difference of actual advancement and add-ons.

3D would be an advancement, if it would work...
Now all it does is make the film blurry and double the ticket price.

Also I'm in the electronics business, the only way for us to sell 3d TVs is to tell our costumers that it is also able to play 3d, if we call it a 3D tv people don't want to buy it.

@tea thats why its best to see it at a drive in 1st.drink smoke whatever.then go to the cinema after you know the slow spots for pee/puff puff pass breaks.another plus to the drive in 1st is that if you wind up at a bad movie you can still save the date if you know what i mean

3D at the best of times is a waste of time for most movies.

Its a bigger waste of time when it's post converted 3D, all it is doing is adding depth of field to the onscreen image, there's nothing that is jumping out at the screen like they would be if it were shot that way, which is just a gimmick, and the movies I saw with it, just play on it so much its distracting. If they did IMAX some of the scenes in The Avengers would have been so much better(if that's possible), especially the one with the Quinjet rising out of the water, just think about it.

Its why I enjoyed Dark Knight so much, because of the IMAX scenes, panaromic views of Chicago & Hong Kong were breathe taking, better that anything shot in 3D.

Avengers in 3D, 2D, whatever - it was amazingly good.
Better than any of its trailers.

It was hard finding a theater that even has the movie in 2d. Most theaters near me only have 3d showings, which I refuse to watch. They can shoot more in imax however.. that's awesome
