The Importance Of Marvel's Phase II And Beyond

With Thor: The Dark World slamming down into theaters this weekend, and the numerous stories now coming to light, we are now getting a better sense of where Marvel Studios is taking it's cinematic adventures? I'd arguably say we are, and read on to see how.

I think many of us who stuck around after seeing Iron Man in theaters remember the post-credits stinger that started everything. I'm of course talking about Nick Fury's appearance in Iron Man.

From there, we got The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, and of course, The Avengers. When you look back though, I can certainly see where Marvel was improvising things as they go along. This is not a slight against them mind you, but there were certain aspects that seemed dropped, disregarded, or used at the last minute. Perhaps I'm wrong, but that's how I feel.

Now we're in Phase II, and so far we have Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. In these two I feel like we're getting a more coherent Marvel universe, where things tie together better, and in many way cohere better to make a better story. Even if we don't see the connections yet.

I'm here to say that I'm starting to see these connections, and I figured why not open a discussion on the issues. Let's speculate as we always do, but let's do so ion a way that will help in understanding all the finer points of Marvel's Phase II thus far. I'll list what I'm seeing, and speculate on where things will go.

IRON MAN 3

Let's start with this year's Iron Man 3. While I have some issues with the movie, I also feel like Marvel has laid a bit of groundwork for what's to come.

First is pretty obvious considering the Avengers: Age of Ultron teaser that shows Iron Man's iconic helmet morphing into Ultron's head. Even the simplest of Mongoloids may see that this is the direction Marvel is taking Tony post-Iron Man 3.

In Iron Man 3 even, there's many parts that start to indicate that JARVIS is becoming more and more sentient. There's many parts of this movie where JARVIS controls the suits, the end battle particularly comes to mind.

It's pretty simple when you think about it, JARVIS and Tony are partners in a way, with the two communicating eachother. In this sense, Tony isn't just Iron Man, it's also JARVIS. IF JARVIS was to go rogue like we suspect he will, then having an AI who has control of much of Tony's equipment and suits would make for a deadly foe.

While Tony thinks he's utilizing JARVIS for a more helpful outcome, it's Tony's arrogance and blind faith that could eventually set up JARVIS as Ultron.

The biggest question is, will Tony return as Iron Man. The final card of the credits reveals that 'Tony Stark Will Return' but that does not mention Iron Man. With all of his suits destroyed, and a rogue AI partner, can Tony do much in The Avengers: Age of Ultron? One theory I have is that Tony will replace Nick Fury as Director of SHIELD. I'll touch on this more later...

THOR: THE DARK WORLD

Like Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World has some pretty big seeds for what's to come. The first is the post-credits stinger that shows Sif and Volstagg handing over the Aether to The Collector who comments that he now has one down, with five to go. This easily cements the future of the story The Infinity Gauntlet. Arguably Marvel's best crossover event.

There's also the reveal that Loki is masquerading as Odin. I think that Marvel will sit on Loki at this point, let him act as Odin for a while until they reveal all of that to Thor.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Maybe the most important thing to remember about TWS is a comment made about the Russo bros. that the movie will make significant changes to the MCU.

Of my speculation is that with a lot of internal turmoil amongst SHIELD, that perhaps Nick Fury and Maria Hill will be asked to step down, and that like in the comics, Tony Stark will become the Director of SHIELD. Considering he doesn't have his suits of armor anymore, it makes sense to give Tony a leadership position.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

My main point of speculation for GOTG is that it will incorporate aspects of The Thanos Quest. A story that saw Thanos seek out the individual Infinity Gems; with the Aether in The Collectors hands now, it would make sense to have Thanos begin to seek the gems out. When the credits roll for Guardians, I want to hope that we'll leave knowing Thanos has the Gems, or that he has begun to seek them out. Leading to The Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers 3.

AVENGERS 2 AND BEYOND

I think I have a pretty solid sense of where things are going in the MCU. Part of me likes surprises, but I feel like both Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World have given us a pretty strong road map for the next 5+ years. In fact, Phase II, more then Phase I, seems to indicate that each movie is increasingly more important to the overall story that Marvel is wanting to tell. That each film keeps adding or taking away more important elements each time.

We have Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, and so on. So much more ahead of us, and I'm excited not just for the destination but the journey itself. I think it's safe to say that after Avengers 2, the focus will shift to Avengers 3 and The Infinity Gauntlet.

Nice article. I wonder if the haters for iron man 3 will be able to like it better once they realize how connected it is to the rest of the mcu. Thats a complaint I heard quite a bit, and I'm sure you have too. Their always saying it doesn't feel like it has a theme that follows the others, except we haven't seen the others yet so I don't get the complaint.

Uh, yeah.......let me think.......no. Stark doesn't even really like Shield, why would he agree to lead it? And besides, I would be willing to bet when push comes to shove, he builds a new suit (or just rebuilds one of his older models) and gets into the action in the next Avengers movie.

With the announcement that Spader will play Ultron, I think it becomes highly unlikely that Jarvis becomes Ultron (since they won't be using the Jarvis voice actor.) Maybe Stark builds, or helps build, Ultron, but I don't think it will just be an issue of Jarvis going nuts. Plus, I still think it's just as likely that the World Council or whatever that runs Shield decides to build Ultron as a failsafe against the Avengers, since they made it very clear they don't trust them. As for the Iron Man mask becoming Ultron during the announcement of the name, yeah, that might mean Stark is responsible, but it could also have just been a cool publicity stunt due to the success of Iron Man 3, or a way to throw everyone off.

@Lhornbk

Tony doesn't like SHIELD, but it's completely feasible that his ego, and his curiosity, would push him to take control of the biggest spy organization. It's a nice way to still protect the world, while not needing to be Iron Man anymore.

It'd also be mindblowing to have a RDJ cameo in the credit scene of Winter Soldier, AND the finale of AOS.

I do agree with you about Jarvis not becoming Ultron.

Dont discount the importance of AoS in the 1st episode Maria Hill said "unregistered". That wasnt a throw away line, it lays very early civil war groundwork. There are SO many directions they can go in a few years.

Thats true, people complain that IM3 felt disjointed from the MCU, which is funny because one of the biggest complaints about IM2 is that it had too many parts with Fury and setting up Iron Man's place for Avengers.

People just dont know what theh want.

@Lhornback this all happened in the comics under similar circumstsnces. Plus if Tony isn't Iton Man anymore because of his suits he may look for a way to contribute and in his eyes 'reforming' SHIELD may be the best way to do that.

@Sikwon At this point Marvel and The Avengers are tied up with Ultron and Thanos. Maybe down the road sure, but Marvel is arguably 10 or 15+ years away from Civil War. Seeds have been planted from as far back as The Avengers if I recall. So yeah it's enroute just a matter of how long it takes to get to us.

@dellamorte I have no doubt Tony will suit up as Iron Man but I think they could have him enter during the last battle or something. They definitely set up a world with Tony not being Iron Man for a while.

@Wylee and @Corndog I think Marvel was more transparent with the MCU stuff; and in this regard miles better then IM2. A minor quarrel with IM3 was its tone and how it did feel like it didn't suit the overall story. That said it was an observance, I still enjoyed the movie and watched it again which spurred on the Editorial. It's just that Shane Black gave it more of a buddy cop movie when I would've arguably gone more techno-spy-thriller. Just me mind you.

Great article.
I agree with the overall assumtions, but I think that we will have a GOTG 2 before Avengers 3, so maybe in that movie we will see Thanos´ quest for the gems, and he will be fully powerful in Avengers 3. (Also in would be nice to see Ms Marvel introduced in GOTG 2, so she can be part of the Avengers in part 3).

Ezio, I know you didn´t ask me but...
Thor TDW: 9
The Wolverine: 8
MOS: 7.5
Iron Man 3: 7

Dig Shane Black and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang but "Iron Man" 3 just didn't do it for me.

What plagued certain movies of the '90's was an allegiance to the bad one-liners that littered the same kind of entertainment a mere decade before.., and by then oneliners had grown..., well, cheesy. We need to be careful not to fall back into that paradigm.

Tony stark has obviously become iron man with the help of extremes and will have the skin armor. He no longer needs a suit ( maybe Jarvis gets jealous)
He basically says it at the end of ironman 3 " I AM ironman"

Infinity Gauntlet should definitely be in the Avengers 3.

The question is? We know Spader will be Ultron but how? Will he be a cyborg version of Ultron? Or, is he a Life Model Decoy that Jarvis takes over and then decides that the Ironman armor will be a good add on to fight back?
great article though.

JARVIS will become Vision and not Ultron. Expect Bettany to be confirmed for Avengers 2 at some point beyond just voice acting. If I'm wrong then I'll eat a @#$%...straight up shove it right down

sikwon : yeah i noticed it, in fact, she said "HE IS AN UNREGISTERED GIFTED", so of course my eyes opened widely when i heard that.

The Avengers´s Civil War reference was in the interviews to the NYC people on TV, one couple says: "Who are they, and what can they do? Are they dangerous?" or somethong like that.

Even Stan´s funny cameo line: "Superheroes in NY? Gimme a break!" is funny yes (since he co-created them lol!), but it implies incredulity by the population.

Nice article. I like to remember these kind of early- speculative articles years later, when by the time we know SO much, and in the early stages, like right now, we know only a few bits of info.

@Hulksta. You want Techno spy thriller? Then I think Ghost would be the perfect villain for that type of film. Then you find out he's being financed by none other than Ezekiel Stane.

You lost me at "Even the simplest of Mongoloids".
Mongoloid is a highly offensive term in the context of your sentence, whether you're referring to people of Mongolian descent (Asian) or people with Down's Syndrome.
It might seems like a synonym for whatever derogatory term you were trying to encompass (and insult) all manner of ( what you perceive to be ) dimwitted people but all you achieved was to lose credibility with one CBM fan.
