Only thing I hate is all the pop-ups on the screen. Gameplay looks new, which is a risky move but hopefully one that pays off

anyone else think the Batgirl suit looks out of place compared to everyone else. Could have kept the one from the Arkham Knight DLC

@Nightwing1015 - To be fair I wasn’t fond of WB Montreal’s last effort. Maybe the gameplay in this will win me over.

@patgreyc - You mean Origins? Yeah I know that was controversial but I personally loved it. It wasn't very innovative but that's ok because the base gameplay from City is so damn fun.

Good! This is obviously the same universe, so that should be good enough for them.

I'm GLAD the main Arkham series is over. As great as it was, it ended just as it was running out of creative steam with Origins and Knight, and the formula was starting to get stale. It's better to end it on a high note and preserve its legendary status than continue pumping out installments like Call of Duty until the franchise becomes stale (which is what usually happens for hugely successful game franchises).

I WISH other "legendary" games (Silent Hill, for example) ended after the fourth installment, because that is usually when everything goes to shit. Do they really want another formulaic uninspired Arkham City / Arkham Knight rip-off from WB Montreal like Arkham Origins? Or another game where you are playing as Batman in an abandoned open world with the Batmobile that's bigger for the sake of being bigger, but also has a heavily repetitive and uninspired story (because of WB Montreal) with a slow-talking mastermind villain and everyone bitching about Riddler trophies again?

This is the natural (and welcome) evolution of the Arkham games. Sometimes a series needs to end when its time has come and innovation becomes a necessity. Mega-fan junkies need to get over that. The alternative is us getting a bunch of shitty stale sequels every year like what happened to Silent Hill. Arkham has a beginning, middle, and conclusion. Let it evolve.

@Darkknight2149 - "This is obviously the same universe"

No there are so many contridictions which imply it's a new universe. Barbra can walk, character models are all different, Mr Freeze is alive and active as a villain, ect.

And personally, I respect your opinion but I would honestly be happy getting an Origins-style Arkham game every 5 years. Yes, to some it would get stale, but for me, I will never tire of that gameplay.

There are no contradictions, just people misinterpreting shit. They reference the Arkham games multiple times in the trailer and its even the same map.

1. Barbara can walk again in the comics too, thanks to implanting a microchip in her spine. The Oracle thing was never permanent.

2. Mr. Freeze was never shown to have died. This is just WB Montreal retconning stuff (again).

Personally, I think one uninspired filler game with Origins was good enough. Arkham is a story-based series above all else, and I'm glad it hasn't devolved into Call of Duty "let's keep pumping them out" shenanigans. Arkham had its run. It's time for the series to be innovated.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 8/22/2020, 3:48 PM
@Darkknight2149 - Well I guess time will tell if this innovation trumps the Arkham series.

Yeah that's an interesting theory, but the leaks (which first told us the title would be "gotham knights") said this was a new universe. So if the leaks were right about the name and premise of the game, I'd wager they're right about the continuity.

I think a "soft reboot" makes sense in terms of continuity seeing as they want to shake up the gameplay a little.

At the very least, it is in an adjacent universe.

Honestly though, that subreddit should be happy they are getting another Batman game at all. Do you know how many other DC characters deserve the Arkham treatment at this point? WB flat out cancelled Rocksteady's Superman game to make a Suicide Squad game (inevitably) with Batman characters in it.

Not only that, but this looks exactly like the other Arkham games but with the whole Bat-family, co-op, multiple vehicles, people walking around, and it explains what happened after Bruce (faked?) his death. This is honestly what a lot of Arkham fans have been asking for for years, but because it might not have Batman in it as a playable character and because it's not a traditional Arkham game, they want to complain?

I just remembered - Another thing that was getting stale by the time we got to Arkham Knight was the overuse of the Joker and the developers running out of ways to put "Arkham" in the title. The series was always planned as a trilogy anyway, and Rocksteady said multiple times that Knight was the final one. A reinvention was sorely needed.

@Darkknight2149 - "Do you know how many other DC characters deserve the Arkham treatment at this point?"

Agreed, I would love a Superman game. Or even better a proper Justice League game made by Rocksteady.

"but this looks exactly like the other Arkham games"

I'd say the lack of freeflow combat and additional RPG elements makes it a significantly different gameplay experience. Like you say, they obviously wanted to try something completely new to prevent things getting stale.

And yeah, hopefully we don't see the Joker again for a while, that did get old.

Darkknight2149 - 8/22/2020, 4:30 PM
@Nightwing1015 -
What are the RPG elements? Did they say that free flow isn't involved? From what I noticed in the trailer, it looked like an Arkham game with tweaked combat and optional multiplayer co-op.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 8/22/2020, 4:39 PM
@Darkknight2149 - No free-flow certainly seems to be gone, it's one of the main things r/BatmanArkham are complaining about. Notice the lack of a counter button and combo meter, which suggests it's missing.

The RPG elements that people are complaining about are XP, enemy healthbars, numbers flashing anytime you hit somebody, enemy level system, ect.
Darkknight2149
Darkknight2149 - 8/22/2020, 4:57 PM
@Nightwing1015 -
I noticed the health bars and that the counter is gone. I don't think that guarantees that free flow is gone, though. I think a lot of it is just people on the subreddit pre-judging, though.

Mostly though, I'm personally just glad that it's a soft reboot/new direction game and not Arkham 4. I would have preferred that they set it before Arkham Asylum and made Batman playable, though. They still might, but I guess they wanted to explain what happened after Batman's "death" and include Jason Todd as a playable character.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 8/22/2020, 5:09 PM
@Darkknight2149 - Well I guess we'll have to wait and see to know for sure.

I actually like that it's focussed on the Bat-family instead of Batman. It makes for a nice change and will probably lead to a fresh story. Plus we all know he's alive and will show up anyway, lol
