BOX OFFICE: Warner Bros. Release Official Figures For THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

It appears as if the tragic shooting at a Colorado movie theatre during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises had a big impact on the domestic box office gross of the threequel. However, it still had the third highest opening weekend ever. Hit the jump for the figures.

Warner Bros. and several other box office tracking agencies decided not to release box office figures over the weekend as a sign of respect to those affected by the shooting in Aurora, Colorado. Unsurprisingly, this tragic event clearly put off many moviegoers in North America as The Dark Knight Rises made a domestic total of $160,887,295 (quite a way off the estimated $180+ million figures thrown around by analysts last week). Regardless, this still gives Christopher Nolan's epic finale the third highest opening weekend ever, below Marvel's The Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and above The Dark Knight and The Hunger Games. It earned $75.7 million on Friday, $44.9 million on Saturday and $40.2 million on Sunday. Meanwhile, it opened to $88 million internationally from 17 markets (it opens in another 40 next weekend) which included $22.5 million from the UK, $15.7 million from Korea and $15.5 million from Australia. That gives it a current worldwide cume of $248.9 million. The Dark Knight Rises has received an 'A' CinemaScore rating from audiences and you can read my 5* review of the film by clicking HERE.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

STARRING:

Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman
Michael Caine as Alfred
Gary Oldman as Commissioner Jim Gordon
Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox
Tom Hardy as Bane
Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake
Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate
Josh Pence as Ra's Al Ghul

RELEASE DATE: July 20th, 2012

The Dark Knight Rises

Total = $160,887,295

Friday $75,754,897
Saturay $44,931,966
Sunday $40,200,432

What's surprising is that if you take away Friday's midnight number ($30 million), Friday basically is the same number as Saturday.

Too bad no one is ever going to know how much Rises would've done without the shooting, just like no one would ever know how TDK would've done without Ledger's death.

3rd all time is still amazing. That being said, I don't think anything will beat $207 Million until Avengers 2.

We'll never know what kind of impact the tragedy had on TDKR. 160million is very impressive.
ksommer
ksommer - 7/23/2012, 2:25 PM
I also think that this might be an indicator that the reason why TDK was so impressive (BO wise) is because of the Joker, a more recognizable villian.

"We'll never be able to know how much money this tragedy cost Warner Bros.," Exhibitor Relations box-office analyst Jeff Bock said Monday. "I think it's safe to say it [would've made] $15 million-$20 million more if that had never happened."

@ksommer Yeah, I think Avengers 2 will beat Avengers. Tickets will probably be $0.50-1.00 more than it is now when that comes out.

The film will make up the lost revenue from the shooting scare over time, this should still be the #4 movie globally after its run. Shame that it took about a $20M hit from the shooting tragedy to take away some of the opening weekend thunder but the movie will do fine in the long run.

I wonder if folks will come out to see the film in the coming weeks. My wife and I saw the movie this weekend. But we still need to take our 2 children who were gone for the weekend. But I basically had to drag my wife to go because she was stuck to the TV watching the shooting coverage.

Since we are talking box office, I could see Marvel re-releasing Avengers a month before Avengers 2 to try and top Titanic and to build more hype.

It did fine, although attendance-wise it did less than The Dark Knight... I'm sure that's largely due to the tragedy, but actually improving beyond TDK's attendance with Bane as the marquee match up was always a long shot.

Now it's about $455m behind The Avengers domestic total... Are there people who still believe it can make up that difference and take the year's box office crown? Personally, I think it's going to have an uphill battle to hit $450m total, let alone in addition to this opening.

No, actually, I think those numbers fall right in line with what was to be expected. Lots of tickets were sold in advance (remember the stories predicting it was outpacing The Avengers in pre-sales?), and the only place that didn't show the movie after the shooting was the theatre in Aurora, as far as I know, so this is about what I expected it to do. I don't think the shooting had much impact at all. I think Ledger's death (and performance) had a greater impact. How much it drops in the next two weeks be the real story.

Oh, and again... Spidey plunged 68% this weekend. That's huge. He slammed into a Bat shaped brick wall.

Its a Phenomenal film!

A great great experience!

It'll be HUGE eventually!
Without shooting, Avengers record was in serious danger!

Still it's great & as movie is so great & got great reviews & audience reception; it'll do great!!

@ERCboxoffice

In 332 IMAX theatres, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES rang up $19,011,476 which is $57,263 per.

So in other words, TDKR did $141.9 million without IMAX.
ksommer
ksommer - 7/23/2012, 2:35 PM
@Chewtoy, I don't think it's possible for TDKR to match the 600 million plus. I think it should be happy with $450m domestic. I think it's going to not have the legs that TDK had, it doesn't have as big of critical acclaim.

It was a team up movie vs a solo movie. Go figure. If anything from DC would have a chance at breaking the box office is a Justice League or Batman/Superman movie.

@FilmsFan... A film is a film. The shooting was already beyond the Avengers vs TDKR box money idiocy when lives have been wasted. Who cares about who did better in box office winnings when some people won't be able to get their lives back together because of what happened. Both movies were good, just enjoy them for what they are, enough said.

me personally i totally agree with Vegakingblade. All that shit is pure speculation. It maybe had an impact and if it did I seriously doubt it was $20 f$*&ing million. Instead of making excuses and getting but hurt about facts you should be proud of TDKR making $160+ million on opening, thats a hell of a feat, why shit all over it with making excuses. say good job Nolan on making an impressive $160 million opening weekend. Jesus and drop the Avengers BS too. I am so sick of the comparison i could freakin vomit. STFU and enjoy the movies and be glad they're making that kind of change so we can enjoy more movies in the future.
