Hildur Guðnadóttir's haunting score for Todd Phillips' Joker was a huge highlight of the film, and ended up nabbing the composer an Academy Award and a Golden Globe - making her only the second woman ever to win Best Original Score at the awards ceremony, and the first to win solo.
We had heard that Guðnadóttir might return to bring her considerable talents to Phillips' upcoming sequel, Folie à Deux, and Variety has now confirmed that the composer is currently working on her score.
Guðnadóttir was already making a name for herself after scoring the likes of Chernobyl and Sicario, but Joker really put her on the map.
“I had been going about my music for 20 years and no one really cared that much,” she said. “It was a huge change for me to have so much attention. Then, of course, straight after the Oscar, COVID hit. So it was a complete U-turn from all the events to just seeing no one. And it made the whole thing a little bit surreal – being by myself, then being around all these people, and then again being alone.”
Plot details are still mostly under wraps, but we do know that the majority of the film will take place in Arkham Asylum, and contain significant "musical elements." A recent rumor also suggested that Lady Gaga's take on Harley Quinn will have a bigger role than originally reported, with the story playing out entirely from her perspective.
Joker: Folie à deux is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024.
