The first official trailer for Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux has arrived and it teases a wild new adventure that will team Academy Award winners Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator; Walk the Line) and Lady Gaga (A Star is BornHouse of Gucci) as Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn, respectively, and thrust them in an all-new musical adventure that promises to leave our collective jaws on the floor.

Speaking at CinemaCon earlier this evening, Phillips teased the film's musical elements, while not exactly labeling the film a musical. “Music is an essential element. It doesn’t veer too far from the first film. We use music to make us whole, to balance the fractures in ourselves.

In addition to Phoenix and Gaga in the leading roles, Primetime Emmy-nominee Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2Atlanta) will also reprise her role as Sophie Dumond, while the supporting cast consists of Academy Award-nominee Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of InisherinEdge of Tomorrow), 2x Academy Award-nominee Catherine Keener (The 40-Year-Old VirginThe Adam Project), Jacob Lofland (The SonMaze Runner: The Death Cure), Steve Coogan (Tropic Thunder; Philomena), Ken Leung (Rush Hour; Old), Harry Lawtey (IndustryThe Pale Blue Eye), Leigh Gill (Joker; Game of Thrones) and Sharon Washington (Joker; Michael Clayton).

Unlike the previous installment, which was made on a modest $70 million production budget, the second chapter will boast a considerably higher price tag as it reportedly cost around $200 million to make. Considering the first film grossed over $1.079 billion at the global box office, it seems as though the studio is extremely bullish on the sequel possibly reaching the same heights, or completely surpassing them.

According to the newly minted DC Studios head James Gunn, this upcoming sequel will not be part of his soon-to-be-launched DC Universe, but will instead be an "Elseworlds" project, along with Matt Reeves' ongoing The Batman series.

Joker: Folie à Deux hits theaters on October 4, 2024.

Check out the official teaser trailer below:

Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks -- the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he's part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker.

"Tell us, [Todd Phillips], what's changed?"

Love how big and grand the musical set-pieces look like here. In general, the craft on display just looks excellent. That final shot was great.

@tmp3 - That's $200 million dollars worth of sets.

@ObserverIO - cost of actor's pay, with Phoenix and Gaga easily the highest, can be a factor. Lot of winner/nominee awards actors in there.

@lazlodaytona - That is true Gaga's at least $100m and that's half your budget right there.

Looks really good,still not entirely sold on the musical side of things but yeah looks good, love the lipstick on the glass shot.

So Harley is just a rando patient at Arkham instead of a psychiatrist? And it looks like she's the one manipulating Arthur instead of the other way around. Also, no accent from Gaga, not even a little.

Yeah, that kind of takes me out of the whole thing. The Mad Love origin is so much more captivating and twisted and could worked so well if it was fully fleshed out on screen.

The visuals are flawless though.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - This is more of an Elseworlds kind of story, well that's how I view the first movie.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I wouldn't say she's manipulating him, moreso she wants his Inner freak flag to fly. Embracing instead of manipulation imo

@bobevanz - egging him on more than manipulation I suppose.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I have a theory... what if she's in his head?

Later on he meets a psychiatrist and kind of makes her in this vision he had - hence Harley is born.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I mean… it’s not like this joker is any more accurate than Gaga Harley. You shouldn’t expect anything resembling the comics

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I've said this since the first: Arthur Fleck is an insecure pushover. He's not the master manipulator that Health Ledger's Joker was; hell, Heath's Joker would probably scramble his brain with words alone. That said, I consider this a stand-alone other-world story about some crazy guy who calls himself the Joker. He would be zero threat to Batman, hence why I do not think a Batman will ever exist in this world.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - It's probably gonna be the same shit we got in that telltale game were Harley wears the pants, hell, some of her costumes in this film remind me of game Harley's design. User Comment Image

@bobevanz - Or does everything in the movie be nothing more than thoughts from Flech's mind?Some truth...lots of untruths.

@MyCoolYoung - Yeah they did the Fight Club thing of flashing back to the scenes she was in but without her there.

She was a real person, but he imagined his friendship/budding romance with her. She never really said more than two words to him in the elevator. His imagination took it from there and fantasized this whole delusional romance with her that never really happened.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - well, if WBs didn't f*** with the first suicide squad, that was Ayer's original plan.

@bobevanz - Yup, they don't seem to be leaning much into Joker & Harle's actual comic relationship in its totality for this film.

I figured they were using music therapy with this many covers, I'm in. I'm not a big fan of musicals but this looks like there will be musical elements in a dramatic romance, idk if it'll hit a billion, the rage bait helped out with the first one so who knows lol

Definitely feels like a love story at its core with the whole metaphor of music making us feel whole and balancing the fractures in ourselves being indicative seemingly of the romance between Arthur & Harley aswell.

Most intrigued by the scene of Arthur being chased by a dude in a clown mask and himself it seems which is odd , wonder what’s all about?.

Anyway , will definitely give it a shot even if I’m not too excited about it as of now.
