New Yorker Film Critic David Denby Says Chris Nolan's Batman Films And The Avengers As A Sign Of Hollywood's Bleak Future

In an interview with TheWrap for his new book Do the Movies Have a Future?, David Denby lashes out against Christopher Nolan's Batman films and The Avengers.

In the biggest year for comic book movies, we had two films, The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, pass the billion dollar mark. Things are looking up for comic book movies but The New Yorker film critic David Denby says otherwise. When talking about Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy he had this to say:

"I can’t tell if he’s against terrorism or is a terrorist, I felt terrorized myself. The plot didn’t make sense in time or space and wasn’t sequential. Acts didn’t have consequences ... I don’t know what comment he’s making in Inception, it seems to be mainly about his own working style.”

Denby went on to say this:“I’m not sure they’re creating an adult audience with Batman and 'The Avengers' parts seven, eight, nine and 10. After five sequels, I’m not sure there will be any interest in seeing a man and woman talking at a table, which may be the most exciting kind of drama, but you have to cultivate a taste for that kind of complexity."

Denby added, “The big studios have broken their unspoken, unwritten contract with America, to offer some version of the country’s soul. ... Instead there is more and more fantasy and more and more pixilated fighting in the dead air of digital space.”

Strong words. Knowing how us comics fans are going to react to this, you have my permission to start the bashing in three, two, one, zero...

Go figure, the Comic book movie genre is filled with fantasy. Who would have guessed that one.

He's kind of picking a style of film he likes and complaining another isn't like it. At least, that's what I got.

Of coarse the first comicbook movie he would bash would be The Dark Knight Rises, like people are making it seem worser then it really is and don't even get me started on the Avengers like really why are there so many cynical people out there?

He must just be jealous, his favorite movie Magic Mike just didn't make as much $$$$$ as Avengers. That's the kinda movie magic he likes

Can we sick Griff on him?

If he doesn't like Hollywood fantasy escapism the low-budget indie scene is full of brilliant movies about real human drama.

i kinda understad his point because every country's cinema culture is creating interesting low-budget independent fikms, whereas hollywood is stuck in their childlike mentality of big explosions and escapist battles.

Spider-man had some cool 3D scenes and the cgi was awesome but the story and the characters not so much except for Andrew Garfields portrayel of peter parker that was dynamite!!

CBM's are the cause of a "bleak future" in Hollywood. Um no, wanting to do reboots and re-imaginings of 25+ year old films is what is causing the downfall.
