Pittsburgh Steelers Star Hines Ward Discusses His Cameo In THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

While many mistakenly assumed that the footballer wearing a "Ward" jersey in The Dark Knight Rises trailer was a reference to actor Burt Ward (Robin), Pittsburgh Steelers player Hines Ward has spoken out on his brief cameo in the movie.

"I had a blast doing it," Ward told USA Today. "It is a big honor for me." When asked what he thought of seeing himself in the trailer and the reaction so far he added, "It's off the chain. I can't wait to see the movie with my son. Everyone wants to be a superhero, but I think that one part is probably all the public wants to see of me," he says of The Dark Knight Rises. "Batman is the focus. I am just glad I got to be a part of history."

"I hadn't run back a kickoff in forever," he said of his particular scene in the highly anticipated movie from director Christopher Nolan filmed at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. "It was a little bizarre. But I scored on the return and any time I score it's a lot of fun."

What has Hines Ward not done.

2 time Super Bowl Champ, Super Bowl XL MVP, yes he is the best blocking receiver in the NFL, oh and he won Dancing with the Stars. Now he is in a Batman movie

Oh and he has done this with cartilage missing in one of his knees

(No I am not a Steelers fan just stating facts)

It is NOT a Burt Ward reference

Sorry, Josh. Nice article, but it seems you still wanna take pot-shots at us fans who think Nolan is a little more clever than you wanna give him credit for. I STILL say Hines' appearance in the trailer IS a nod to Burt Ward, the original TV Robin, and Hines' own explanation lends the theory more credence.

You wanna know why he hasn't returned a kick-off "in forever?" Maybe it's because he's NOT PITTSBURGH'S KICK-OFF RETURNER. He's also not the PUNT RETURNER EITHER. Antonio Brown (1st string) and Emmanuel Sanders(2nd) are the KR and PR's respectively. Meweldi Moore (KR) and Jerricho Cotchery(PR) are the 3rd stringers on special teams.

So why have a Steeler who doesn't even play the position he plays in real life play the one HIGHLIGHTED in the trailer? His popularity? Maybe. But Troy Polamalu is arguably more well known and much more of a dynamic presence, what with his CGI-friendly, Head & Shoulders' locks of hair...how 'bout Heath Miller, even?

The fact is, other recievers on the team could have been picked to run downfield, turn around and give the fans a money shot at the end of the sequence, but Nolan picked Hines Ward because those who know the history of Batman and those who have been speculating about Robin's presence in TDKRs would have their own little in-jokes. The same last names are a convenient coincedence that Nolan CHOSE to take advantage of.

When a LOT of us saw a big fat "WARD" in the trailer, we were subconciously reminded of the guy who most famously played the boy wonder. Nolan knew we would make the association, and in a way, he's already put Robin IN the movie, albeit in a subliminal sort of way.

That's my story, and I'm stickin to it, regardless of what anybody says...and that includes Nolan himself. Andy Warhol, another famous Pittsburgher, warned us to never believe what an artist says about his or her own work anyway, and he was right!

Ben and Polamalu are probably the only other more recognizable names on the Steelers and they don't have the build to look and play the role of a kickoff returner. Convenient that Hine's last name is Ward? Perhaps, but I wouldn't have given it a second thought. He's a Steeler player with the last name Ward. The Steeler players were used to shoot the scene. One of their owners is executive producer of the film. If someone wants to read into it as a Robin reference...all the power to you. Don't know how that is going to make the film and storyline any different, but enjoy.

@Intruder None of us have seen the whole movie yet, so who knows what else Nolan put in there? By the way, I've NEVER liked Robin, I don't think he's physically in the film, but whether or not Nolan INTENDED to "sub-consciously invoke a lame-ass character into his supposed masterpiece with a football player," I don't know. But he DID, or else we wouldn't be talking about it.

@Strange1 Whether Nolan thinks Hines Ward is the 'coolest' Pittsburgh WR is debatable..but ultimately irrelevant. Yes, he has returned kickoffs before, so what? He hasn't for YEARS, and it's NOT what he's known for. HE's not bringing people in to see TDKR... the BATMAN LEGEND and Nolan's VISION IS... and Robin, as famously played by BURT WARD, is a PART of that live-action legend, lame or not.

People are trying way to hard to find a Robin reference that doesn't exist.

Dude is a tough player but he has been past his prime for about three seasons now. It use to bug me because he would smile all the freaking time when playing and I hate the Steeler's. Still have to tip my cap to them though, The Steelers and The Patriots owned the NFL during the first decade of the 2000's.

Part of Nolan's class is how he involves the local community to share in the making of a film. I don't get how haters like to call him pretentious. If anything, he respects the audience's intelligence and the people he works with. I never heard him complaining about filming like some directors and I haven't heard anyone complain about him. Well, except for the insecure haters that never met or worked with him.

I'm sure the Steelers and all of Pittsburgh became a Nolanite to some extent.
PeterDarker121
PeterDarker121 - 12/21/2011, 6:24 PM
@EverythingBurns I didn't "try hard" to find a "reference" for anything. The first time I saw the trailer and noticed the "R" logo in the stands and the letters "Ward" at the end, I just thought of Robin and Burt Ward. I don't see why this upsets so many people.

What I don't want to see as we enter perhaps the greatest CBM year EVER are real-life versions of COMIC BOOK GUY, whose fascist ideas on how fans MUST relate to their comic book heroes are a long-running joke on the Simpsons. That's why I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYBODY on ANY FILM tells me about THE FILM their making. We live in a media culture where people tweet every thought in their head, and verse flows like air thru the sky. While this can be a great thing, it can also make viewers of ART lazy in thinking for themselves about what they see. Ed Norton didn't do a lot of press for TIH (for reasons we all know by now), but that's been his approach to his craft for years. On the Charlie Rose show, he once said he doesen't like to see actors and other artists give numerous interviews talking about their work because it takes away somewhat from the mystery of their final product, and he is right to a certain extent. Back to my Warhol analogy, he was once asked what he thought about one of his pieces, to which he famously replied (I paraphrase) "I don't know. Why don't YOU tell ME what YOU SEE and I'll repeat what YOU say." It's a brilliant commentary to keep the artist from being pigeonholed into a category. It's not the artists job to tell you what to think or what to look for in their work. Their only job is make what they make and for us to look at it subjectively.

So when TDKR comes out on Blu-Ray with the Nolan Commentary, I'm sure he'll say "I meant no references to Robin in the movie." or maybe he'll say "I meant to have a few references to Robin in the movie." Either way, I don't care. He can't tell me how to see his art anyway.
