Sir Michael Caine Talks TDKR, Does He Drop A Spoiler?

A mild spoiler maybe, but while speaking to Collider at the junket for Pixar’s Cars 2, the veteran actor praised Christopher Nolan and also hints at Alfred's role in the movie..

Collider's Steve Weintraub is currently participating in a video press conference with Sir Michael Caine and has asked him about The Dark Knight Rises which is currently shooting in London. The actor went on to praise director Christopher Nolan and joke about how secretive he can be, but also seems to drop a spoiler at the same time..

It’s fantastic. I started filming last week and I film next week. As the butler, I do a load of filming at the beginning and everybody goes off and does all the adventures and they all come home shot to pieces and I patch them together when they all get back. Christopher Nolan, I think, is one of the greatest directors in the world and I’ve been lucky enough…this is my 5th movie with him. It’s such a pleasure to work with him and he’s so clever. We’ve all signed the official secrets act. I’m lucky to be able to tell you the title of the movie. I remember I did an interview and someone said to me, “what are you doing next?” I said, “I’m doing Batman.” I saw Chris and he said, “why did you tell them you were doing Batman?” I said, “because I am.” He said, “you’re supposed to keep it secret.” I said, “I couldn’t keep that a secret.” Let me tell you…the plot is extraordinary…really extraordinary. I know why he wants to keep it a secret. You really need not to know till you see the movie.”

As Weintraub notes, "they all" is very interesting. Maybe it's just how Caine worded what he said but that sounds s=to me like it may mean that Batman is working with allies. We know that Catwoman is rumored to side with him as the movie progresses but even then that wouldn't qualify as "They all". Might be nothing, but it's certainly worth thinking about.

If they're doing the Knightfall story, then Batman has to have an ally.

It'll be Catwoman. I'd wager Catwoman will perform the Azrael role.

When he says "they", I think he means the crew, not the characters. They go and shoot the adventures (Some the shoot the batman stuff, some catwoman's, some Bane's) without him and when they go back home (to the Wayne Manor), it's the only time he gets to see all of them together.

Nolan has said MANY times that Robin will just be in a crib during his Batman movies, since he'll only do Bat-films taking on a young Bruce.
That doesn't rule out a Nightwing who's never been Robin, though. And I can see Catwoman being in Azrael's place.

Reading too much into it it'll be just Bats he patches up. That being said I wouldn't doubt near the end Catwoman sides with Batman as a reluctant ally but obviously for her own personal gain. When doesn't she have her own agenda when teaming with Bats?

@breakUbatman Daredevils Powers: Superhuman Sense of Touch,Superhuman Sense of Smell, Superhuman Sense of Hearing, Superhuman Sense of Balance, Radar Sense. Key word Superhuman, so the word "super" would be in an a Daredevil movie, if your talking about a movie in a similar tone to Nolans movies then I agree with you on that but if your talking about movie where he doesn't have those abilities then it wouldn't really feel like a daredevil movie at all.

Ok, hang on, So you guys think that Caine is implying that the CREW go out and get banged up and then come back and he patches them up..he, as in, Michael Caine? And that to you seems more plausible that if he actually meant his character..Alfred, like the part where he says "As Alfred"? Yeah, you're probably right.

@PaulRom...but NightWing is Dick Grayson...who was Robin before he was NightWing. ...thus eliminating the possibility of seeing NightWing as well... as i'm sure Nolan is familiar with that continuity.

anyway...this doesnt seem like any kind of spoiler so much as common sense. Alfred patches up Bruce all the time...remember TDK and the dog bite? ...seems like a bit of a stretch calling it a spoiler.
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 6/18/2011, 2:34 PM
It's not a really a spoiler, it's a speculation-charger. An actor casually says something, it's taken literally, then NightWing and BlackMask are in the movie.

The Batman films can't get any better than Nolan has made them, and it seriously irks me that a reboot has been announced before he's even finished filming his third and final entry. It makes me wonder what's the point of watching it if all they're going to do is ultimately ignore it and start all over again? Not to mention it's like slapping Nolan in the face in return for the, I don't know, BILLION AND A HALF DOLLARS HE'S MADE THE FRIGGIN' STUDIO.

Dumbasses.

Nightwing...Dick Grayson...Robin? Comon' looks as if we just have a few movie watchers here and not real Batman comic book readers. First of all, Robin sucks and is a pansy and so is Dick and his Nightwing. Jason Todd was the First Robin and it should have stayed that he was blown up and stayed dead. Case closed and I have always thought that this was the way Nolan should have done it. Use a shadowed Joker to kill Robin and you'd never see the Joker or Robin again. At least the Joker would still live on. Nolan could have done something really cool with this to end his reign of the franchise. Yes, I said it..KILL ROBIN! BTW, just to let you all know, there has never been anyone as sexy and hot as Halle Berry. Her performance in Monsters Ball was golden.

LoudLon It has to stop and I don't think it's a situation where Nolan is being kicked out. He's finishing it on his own accord. How many films do you think their should be? I love Nolan's Batman films and three is enough. He's locked the character in box where he can't expand. Someone else HAS TO reboot it if Batman is to get back to more comic-related material like scientific and monstrous villains. And thanks to Nolan, no one will dare make a Batman movie resembling Schumacher's Batman and Robin ever again. This is a good deal.

We get an awesome Dark Knight trilogy from Nolan, then a reboot that has to uphold quality production values but is not restricted to Nolan's "realism". The next Batman can co-exist in a universe with Superman or face a Clayface or Penguin. The Dark Knight is an excellent movie but the style in which Nolan presents it starts tomake Batman himself look out of place. There can't be 4 and 5 Batman movies in this fashion and remain successful. Nolan isn't a dummy and I believe he planned on being done after the second film. Let's get a solid Nolan trilogy and look forward to the next Batman interpretation.
LoudLon
LoudLon - 6/18/2011, 3:20 PM
@NeoBaggins -- Like you say, he's not being kicked out. He envisioned a trilogy and that's exactly what he's doing.

But a reboot? At least they waited seven or eight years after the ridiculous Schumacker flicks before Nolan showed them what a real Batman movie could be.

As far as how many I think there should be, I'd say there are plenty enough as is, with Nolan's trilogy -- or at least the first 2/3 of his trilogy -- being the very best to date. I don't think it's a matter of how many we need, it's a matter of how much is enough? With TDKR we'll have:

1. Batman: The Movie (Adam West)
2. Batman '89
3. Batman Returns
4. Batman Forever
5. Batman & Robin
6. Batman Begins
7. The Dark Knight
8. The Dark Knight Rises

Eight movies. EIGHT. Not counting countless cartoons involving not only the "classic" Batman, but just about every kind of variation you can think of. Once we get TDKR I wouldn't care if I never saw another Batman movie, even if TDKR is, and I'm sure it will be, the ultimate Batman flick.

There's nowhere to go but down after Nolan's Batman flicks, so why bother?

It occurs to me that the 'reboot' ppl are suggesting is more of just a new version of Batman films. I doubt they'd redo the origin. If Nolan's are the younger Batman, then the most logical thing to do is have another director do Batman in their own way depicting a different time and tone, and possibly ignoring any closure Nolan may create. I think Batman after this will be still dark in tone but adding the more supernatural aspects (crazy gadgets and bad guys).
