Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn. In this case, The Joker (portrayed by Heath Ledger) just wanted to watch Lau (portrayed by Chin Han) burn. We last saw Lau sitting on top of the money. He had on a straitjacket and several times The Joker taunts him while he chats with The Chechen (portrayed by Ritchie Coster). Below, is an unused shot from Chris Nolan's masterpiece, The Dark Knight. It depicts Lau's fiery off-screen death.
THE DARK KNIGHT (2008) reunites director Christopher Nolan ("The Prestige") with star Christian Bale ("Empire of the Sun"), who returns to continue Batman’s war on crime. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as the Joker (Heath Ledger), who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces the Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.

THE DARK KNIGHT (2008) was directed by Christopher Nolan, from a script written by Jonathan Nolan, David S. Goyer and of course Christopher Nolan himself. The film starred: Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Heath Ledger as Joker, Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two-Face, Michael Caine as Alfred, Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel, Gary Oldman as Gordon, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Cillian Murphy as Scarecrow, and Eric Roberts as Maroni.

I think it was actually MORE creepy and disturbing that they didn't explicitly showed this. It was just implied. It makes the Joker seem that much more careless and laid-back about taking someone's life.

This Movie is from beginning to end: SPECTACULAR.

DC needs to put out a Batman movie every other year of this caliber. His Story, His Rogues, just endless Awesomeness! :D

Can you imagine a directors cut of this movie that's like 4 hours?! That would be amazing

It obviously wasn't that bad. He looked perfectly fine in The Winter Soldier and looked even better in Arrow.

I can imagine what an R rated cut for this movie would have been like.

I liked that they did it off screen too. It also makes it not as noticeable to kids.

That's the thing I don't like about Nolan (though I understand why he does this). He doesn't believe in extended cuts or releasing deleted scenes or any of that stuff. He believes that whatever's in the movie is the definitive version, and everything he leaves out is left out for a reason. It pretty much guarantees that we get the best possible movie, but there's just some rumored scenes that I'd LOVE to see someday. Like the rumored scenes of Ra's al Ghul training Bane, for example.

Here.We.GO.

Joker was very generic but Joker is well known and brilliantly acted by Heath Ledger, that everyone looked past all that.

We never know who he really is or why he is. Sure, he wanted to watch the world burn, but any other villain with these same credentials would be labeled as "mediocre". It seems his only real goal was to turn ONE man to the "dark side", not very original.

I will get scolded for this because some won't be able to separate from the greatness that was TDK. And they shouldn't because it was [frick]ing awesome, but answer me this. If all this was an OBSCURE property with the villain pulling all this mayhem, would you all still be drooling over it?

Man, that's chilling. Warming for Lau, but chilling for everyone else. I kinda feel sorry for him. Its pretty disturbing.

That makes no sense.
If The Dark Knight is your second favourite ever, how does it come second, again, in a list of DC movies?

I mean, if you think Superman II is better than The Dark Knight, shouldn't Superman II be your #2 all-time favourite? I'm only going by what you've stated.

Awesomesauce

1. That's the point of the joker character. he doesnt have an origin story. His back story, even in the comics, is a mystery. Nolan simply took advantage of his vague background and made his own version.

2. Just because he doesnt have any real reason to be evil, doesn't mean hes Mediocre. Thee are plenty of Movie villains with no background story to speak of that can be considered amongst the best movie villains ever.

3. The jokers goal wasnt exactly to turn one man to the "Dark side" but to simply spread "Chaos" across gotham. In most cases just to prove a point.

Sidenote: Not attacking you.
