I don't see how not showing Bruce is an improvement to the ending. The cafe scene was fine. What most people don't like about the ending is how Batman managed to escape the bomb.

The cafe ending ruined the power of the scene where Alfred is standing by the graves crying saying along the lines "I'm sorry that I failed you".

Should of been: Cut to young Bruce waking up in bed all sweaty from a nightmare, both his parents walk in to comfort him. Camera shifts to the window to see a single bat sitting on the sill.

Sorry, this is just fanboy nitpicking. Thinking you know better than the filmmaker just because you have an opinion.

The ending was perfect. Audiences need that money shot of Bruce and Selina because they've earned it...to sit through the whole movie and get nothing is kinda lame. I get that ambiguous endings that leave it up to the imagination (Sopranos, anyone?) sometimes work, but this isn't that kind of movie. Plus, the shot serves several purposes - e.g., Selina is wearing the necklace, Bruce is wearing pink and Selina blue, which means he has finally left his 'mask' behind, it signals a new phase in his life, etc.

It's like Shawkshank Redemption. The film originally ended with Red on the bus...but they went back and shot the amazing reunion scene on the beach for the same reason - they felt that after 2 hours of prison, the audiences had earned a cathartic final note. And it lifts the ending to another level.

The ending works!
