BLACK PANTHER Continues To Smash Box Office Records; Now Looking At A Massive $242M Holiday Weekend

The estimates for Black Panther's Holiday Weekend box office performance were already very high, but the Ryan Coogler-helmed film has managed to surpass them all. Get the latest updates after the jump...

Yesterday, we reported that Marvel and Ryan Coogler's Black Panther had recorded the second-best Sunday ever at the domestic B.O. with an estimated $59.55 million, but it turns out those calculations were slightly off.

BLACK PANTHER SPOILERS: A Rundown Of All Of The Biggest Reveals And Most Shocking Moments

According to Variety, T'Challa's first solo adventure actually clawed in $60.1 million, which means that if the $40.17? Monday estimates are accurate the movie will come away with a $242 million four-day debut.

This means Black Panther would not only take the crown for the largest ever President’s Day weekend as well as the highest three-day debut ever for a February release, but it would give it the best four-day opening for any superhero film in history.

Honestly, the way this movie continues to defy all expectations, it wouldn't be at all surprising if it once again surpassed even these high figures.

Tell us, have you been to see Black Panther yet? If so, what did you think? Sound off in the usual place.

@JohnnyTBP -

I have a serious question;
to whomever can answer it:

we know Black Panther is doing Amazingly great at the box office and I keep seeing on the news how people dressed as africans at the theater and getting all excited after seeing it.
why is this movie doing so well ?

is it because of black history month?
is it because representation?
is it because is a black superhero movie ?
is it because is a Marvel movie with all black ensemble ?

I ask because I don't think this is the first black superhero lead in a movie. I'm planning on seeing it later today, I'm not troll just asking an honest question, maybe if I was american I'd understand ...?

@JohnnyTBP - I'm so happy for Chadwick and Coogler and the entire cast!

Disney and Marvel Studios better treat them well.

@Equivocal - You're right, BP is not the 1st black led superhero movie (Blade, Spawn, Hancock, etc.) but it is the 1st that boasts a cast w/ a predominantly black cast, leads & filmmakers.

But aside from those stats, I believe BP's influence stretches beyond the genre due in part to America's current cultural climate where race is once again at the forefront of division.

So I think the timely combination of BP's message of representation, responsibility & empowerment along w/ the rare black superhero movie featuring a mostly all black ensemble led by a talented & thoughtful young black filmmaker who's filmmaking led to one of the genre's best villains in MBJ's Killmonger, not to mention that all this was backed by the crowd pleasing movie making machine known as Marvel-I think all these pieces led to BP doing not just well, but better than most ever imagined.

To me, the movie itself is not quite at the level of CA: TWS, Avengers or TDK but still on the upper echelon of superhero movies w/ IM1, SM: Homecoming, WW & GotG.

BUT regardless of standing, Black Panther is def a cultural game changer (in America at least) that I imagine will have lasting effects on not just comic book movies but filmmaking in general.

I hope that helps shed some light on your questions, but here's a collection of articles that may help further: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/20/watching/black-panther-movie-roundup.html

Oh almost forgot, enjoy your screening!!!

@JohnnyTBP - I feel bad for Wonder WomaN. BP has quite a lot of similarities to WW. They have a city invisible to mankind, they abandoned mankind due to war and trust issuses, BP's villain is a relative with similar powers, both are royalty, WW can create explosions, etc.

And the hands crossing to make an X

@JohnnyTBP - I loved that Chadwick/Coogler/team allowed T'Challa to be vulnerable throughout the film. When he visits his father the first time in the Ancestral Plane and begins to cry as he kneels before his father, I just get goosebumps. And when he later says to his father, "I'm not ready"..."I'm not ready to be without you". As a black man who has a deep gratitude and love for my own father, no matter how complex and flawed my father may be. I don't know it really makes me emotional.

I know people are saying that Chadwick was stoic and not as out there in his portrayal of T'Challa in comparison to the other great characters introduced in this film, but seeing the film three times now I really believe he carries this film and grounds it in a lot of ways.
