BLACK PANTHER Star Michael B. Jordan Weighs In On The Marvel Movie's Oscar Chances

There's a lot of speculation that Black Panther could end up being nominated for "Best Picture" at next year's Academy Awards, and now Michael B. Jordan has shared his thoughts on the likelihood of that.

While a huge amount of backlash led to the Academy ditching the idea for a "Popular Movie" category at the Oscars, there are still many pundits who believe that Black Panther could land a "Best Picture" nomination. That's because the Marvel Studios movie not only had a huge cultural impact, but was also an extraordinary comic book adaptation which was hailed by many critics as a masterpiece.

With Creed II now in
theaters, Michael B. Jordan (who played the villainous Erik Killmonger) has shared his thoughts on the movie's Oscar chances and while he would like to see it receive some awards attention, it sounds like the massive cultural effect is still its biggest achievement in his eyes.

"The movie has done such a great job, broke through so many glass ceilings, and made such an impact culturally and around the world. If the Academy chooses to recognize that project for all of those reasons that’s amazing icing on the cake, but I think what the movie has done so far is truly incredible and a win all its own. I felt so accomplished doing this movie, but it’s not up to me to validate the film. So the people who make those decisions, that’s something they have to think about and figure out on their own."

He makes a valid point, and even if Black Panther were somehow able to win the "Best Picture" Oscar, it ultimately wouldn't make a difference to how beloved the movie is or the impact it had when it was released back in February.

He is right. The film has made a great cultural impact, a lot of money, and is good on it's own.

This. The film has achieved a massive reward with its glowing response from critics and audiences, its record breaking box office and its cultural impact. It's up to the Academy to decide whether they nominate it or not. It's their decision after all. Whether they find it Oscar worthy or not, that doesn't change anything. It's not a smaller film looking for awards buzz to get an audience. No nomination or win will mean anything for a film this successful and praised, other than some further recognition, which it doesn't really need.

Same quality of film as Dr. Strange, Ant-Man, and Homecoming...run of the mill, it'll be a joke if this gets an oscar nomination.

@Canon108 - I agree. I very much enjoyed this movie and am very aware of the beauty of its cultural impact, but allllll that aside, it's just like every other Marvel movie. Nothing special here plot-wise. It's just okay

It's not Dark Knight. It's not Spider-Man 2.
