BLUE BEETLE Set Video & More Photos Give Us A Better Look At That Comic-Accurate Costume

Last night, we got a first glimpse of Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña in full costume as the Blue Beetle on the set of the currently shooting movie, and thanks to some more photos and a brief video, we now have an even better look at that comic-accurate outfit.

The video was shared by The Daily Mail, and appears to show Jaimie Reyes escaping from a crushed vehicle. What - or who - could be responsible for the damage? We still don't know which villain will feature in the film, but looking at the state of that car, could it be Doctor Polaris? There are plenty of other possibilities, of course, including Amparo Cardenas, aka La Dama.

In addition, Just Jared has posted a tonne of new photos, giving us a more detailed look at Reyes' costume.

Sharon Stone is set to play a newly created character named Victoria Kord, but a rumor that Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis will play her son, Ted Kord, has now been debunked. Brazilian newcomer Bruna Marquezine is also on board as the female lead and Reyes' love interest Penny, and Belissa Escobedo (Sex Appeal, American Horror Stories) as Jaime's younger sister Milagros Reyes. Harvey Guillen’s (What We Do In The Shadows) role is currently being kept under wraps.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, the film will focus on Maridueña's take on Reyes, who was introduced back in 2006's Infinite Crisis. The Mexican-American teen was actually the third character to take up the mantle of Blue Beetle after Dan Garret and Ted Kord - although he's arguably eclipsed both in popularity since. Mexican-born writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer penned the screenplay, and John Rickard is on board as producer.

The movie was originally being developed as a HBO Max exclusive, but we recently found out that The DCEU's first Latino lead hero will make his feature debut on the big screen on August 18, 2023.

the suit looks pretty good! His body language is already reminding me of Tom Holland's Spider-man though...I hope they don't make Jaime a Peter-Parker-clone.

@TheRose - I can hear some new people say after this it’s iron man and venom his suit is alive come from space but does stuff like iron man for people not knowing what character is about non comic book fans know my father will say that maybe some people I work i with

@TheRose - I was getting that, but also Power Rangers/Super Sentai vibes, but in a good way.

@TheRose - from all 10 seconds of footage. Go back to bed.

@McMurdo - Obviously, that perspective could change from the actual footage when completed. In this clip, the jerky head motions, tense shoulders and apologetic hand gestures come off as Tom Holland Peter to me. I'm looking forward to this film though! My main exposure to Blue Beetle is S2 of Young Justice and I thought he was a compelling lead for the season with a visually exciting powerset.

Honestly, I blame the MCU for putting an AI in Peter's suit. I'm going to subconsciously have that association with Jaime when I see a bug-hero maneuvering thorough buildings and making quips to himself and the voice in his head. But MCU Peter had to be Tony's sidekick...for some rea$on.

My original comment that was a compliment, observation, then hope for something new. You're the one coming off as grumpy...maybe time for a siesta?

@TheRose - they are noticeably similar, but if following the comics, jaime is more different than he is similar

The suit looks great, not guna lie. With that said. I know Nothing about BlueBeetle and didnt even know this movie was happening. Maybe with a trailer they'd convince me to see it.. but anything WB and DCEU related i'm passing on. Only DC stuff i want more of is Reeves Batman-verse.

@MotherGooseUPus - I do hope they start building up other heroes in Batverse as well. A Superman or Green Lantern movie could work in that universe I think.

As for the DCEU, I don't mind it if they keep doing stuff in that. A Young Justice movie with Batgirl, Supergirl, Blue Beetle, Static, Shazam and Aquaman & Wonder Woman as their mentors would be cool (I kinda envision it as the endgame movie of the DCEU, kinda like what Apokalips War was for the DCAMU).

MotherGooseUPus - 5/26/2022, 8:26 AM
@bkmeijer1 - my only concern with say, Superman or GL in the Batverse is how grounded his take would be.... with that said, i'm still very excited to see where this trilogy goes. I LOVED the Batman.

I have 0 faith in the DCEU. I liked a few of their earlier movies, with Man of Steel, Shazam, WW and Aquaman being movies i think are decent. The new stuff has been garbage, and they seem to have 0 plans in place... just winging it and hoping something becomes a hit and if it does, then riding that train until they inevitably ruin it.

This is also coming from someone who absolutely LOVED The Batman Animated series and JLU, which imo were the pinacol and greatest comicbook cartoon shows ever.

bkmeijer1 - 5/26/2022, 8:32 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - it's weird how they manage to go out winging it, when they already have the perfect blueprint with the DCAU.

But with Superman or Green Lantern, I can see it work. The Long Halloween or the Arkham games aren't as grounded as The Batman, but I think they feel very similar. And they made supernatural and mystical elements work fine within those relatively grounded realities.

And also, I keep comparing to Iron Man. No way did I think the universe established in that movie was ever gonna see Doctor Strange meeting a Reed Richards from another universe or have the three live-action Spider-Men meet up

MotherGooseUPus - 5/26/2022, 8:49 AM
@bkmeijer1 - i agree with everything you just said. Hopefully they do expand on the Batverse and bring in other heros and villians from outside the Bat family and rogues... only time will tell but i'm excited to see where it goes
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/26/2022, 8:56 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - I'm definitely excited to see where it goes as well. And if they take their time, they can keep us excited for a long time

@MotherGooseUPus - if they want to make a new superman for battinsonverse, make it different than other superman.maube make him land on metropolis instead 9f Smallville, just like the red son superman, and trained become American icon.

Still can't get over that they went with the practical suit, and even managed to make it look good. Already makes me look forward to this movie even more

bkmeijer1 - 5/26/2022, 8:34 AM
@Waddles - I was never really that big fan of a Black Adam or Dwayne Johnson anyway, so I'm not all that interested in that. And I don't have any hype for Flash either (even though he's one of my favorite heroes).

I do look forward to seeing the Justice Society and Supergirl respectively in those movies though. Definitely an interesting timeline

Carapax as Victoria Kord's armed hand.

He is powerful enough to throw Blue Beetle into a car.

Why are live-action superhero helmets almost always too big?

bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/26/2022, 8:58 AM
@tylerzero - I guess because they have to fit their heads in there or something like that?

There are obviously also examples where they look huge, so I wish they kinda followed those structures (like Spider-Man or Black Panther)
1stDalek
1stDalek - 5/26/2022, 3:49 PM
@tylerzero - They have to fit his head with all that hair and work reliably during stunts. There's probably a more form fitting one for close-ups and CGI shots, IIRC the same thing applies to Black Panther's suit.

Kind of surprised that the reaction to the suit is that positive…. I don’t think it looks bad, but it’s one of those things where I say to myself “it’ll probably look better on film”

Getting excited about this now. I hope the scarab's wings show up though - the ones that stick up from the back. That's a really iconic part of his costume that makes it stand out from just another iron-man type suit.
