Robert Downey Jr. Talks About Playing A Villainous (?) 'Iron Man' In CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Robert Downey Jr. talks here about why he chose Captain America: Civil War over Iron Man 4, how both Tony Stark and Steve Rogers will need to undergo some changes to end up coming to blows, and whether or not he views his character's transformation into that of a villain...

The news that Robert Downey Jr. would star in Captain America 3 was perhaps the biggest and most exciting story of 2014, especially as it meant that the teammates would go into battle against each other just like in Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's critically acclaimed Civil War. Of course, the title later being revealed as Captain America: Civil War helped to build a lot of excitement!

Talking to Empire Magazine recently, Downey weighed in on why exactly he chose to become part of the threequel and dropped some hints about what his role there could mean for Tony Stark's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "They said to me, 'If we have you, we can do this, or Cap 3 has to be something else. It's nice to feel needed. And at this point it's about helping each other, too. I look at it as a competition and I go, 'Wow, maybe if these two franchises teamed up and I can take even a lesser position, with people I like and directors I respect, maybe we can keep things bumping along." It's a valid point, especially when you take into account the fact that Iron Man is the only Marvel Studios superhero to have earned over $1 billion in a solo movie!

Of course, as exciting as this all is, it's still hard to imagine the Tony Stark we've all come to know and love transforming almost into the far more responsible version from Civil War who believes that superheroes should register with the government for the safety of the public. Downey however sees this as a natural evolution of his character, and a believable change based on what happens in Avengers: Age of Ultron. "It's natural to change your views," he says. "The main thing to me is, what sort of incident could occur, and what sort of framework could we find Tony in? The clues about where we might find him next are in Ultron. But what would it take for Tony to completely turn around everything he's stood for? Joss brings this up all the time. It's kind of weird that these guys would have all these throw downs all over planet Earth and yet when the movie's over, nobody minds. What would the American government do if this were real? Wouldn't it be interesting to see Tony doing something you wouldn't imagine?"

The events of the comic book series would see Iron Man transformed into an almost villainous figure, manipulating his fellow heroes and even cloning Thor! Could Marvel's most popular superhero be about to become their biggest bad guy? "I wouldn't put it that way. The biggest question is, for Chris and for Cap, how do we bring Cap to a place where people go, 'Man, I never thought I would see such a vast change in Steve.' After you see Snowpiercer, you're like, 'I want to see a little bit of that guy.'" What do you guys think of these comments? Sound off below.

I hope Tony's the one to kill Cap at the end.

Yeah, I hope they don't market and showcase him as the main antagonist. It should be pretty conflicted and empathetic between both Stark and Cap.

Whose Side Are You On?

This movie will absolutely own. And I definitely think this is only the kickoff. 'Civil War' will run through all the phase 3 movies. Culminating with infinity war part 1. When they finally come together in that movie.

I honestly love the support marvel gets from its main actors. DC has henry Cavill ringing the bell for them, good on him. But with RDJ, Evans, and the rest of the gang banging the team marvel gong, its hard not to get caught up in how excited they are to be part of this universe.

Would be cool if this would be like Rush where you could actually support them both but you couldnt decide whose side you really were on.

It should be Marvel: Civil War or even Avengers: Civil War could fit this movie more than the actual title.

Chris Evans delivered two of my favourite performances from last year with The Winter Soldier & Snowpiercer. I agree with Downey - I'd love to see a little bit of both in Cap come Civil War.

Well if Daniel Bruhl is going to be Baron Zemo in a Cap film I can't see Stark being the main antagonist of the piece.

Chris Evan's performance in Snowpiercer was just.... wow! I would love to see him bring some of that darkness to Steve Rogers in Civil War

The crap he was saying to Peter and Cap was ridiculous. Wasn't fair.

Cap acting like Evans snowpiercer character.....Cap reaching a breaking point where he's just beating mother[frick]ers till they bleed all in the name of freedom??!! Yeeeeeeeeees. I want to see Cap pushed to the brink like in the comic and then he realizes the devestation he abd tony caused

@MrCBM56 - Agreed. Which side is right should be murky. There shouldn't be a "right" side. It's shades of gray. Like being Republican or Democrat. Neither side is good or evil. (despite what zealots on boths sides may say/think.) Both sides have altruistic goals, so should be the case in Civil War.

That's one of my complaints about Agents of Shield. They make Hydra evil (which they are) with no real reason why Hydra is doing what it is doing other than a psychopathic drive to kill people and seek world domination. Hydra should be depicted as an organization with altruistic goals but one that has no scruples in how they reach that goal. I think that that is what Cap 2 tried to depict but the Shield show seems to have thrown all those shades of gray out the door.

Hopefully Cap 3 will keep those shades.

@MexicanSuperman

You don't want Iron Man in a movie based on a comic book where Captain America and Iron Man go head-to-head?

Did I miss something in that statement?

Why don't we let Avengers 2 come out first before talking about this film?

Still not sure why they had to stuff RDJ into Chris Evans' trilogy.
This movie could easily be Avengers: Civil War and let Cap finish his own personal story in his own movie.

Well as long as they dont have go completey out of character and its more of a natural position on his stance then im ok with this.

can't wait for this movie. for people that think this movie NEEDS Spider-man and the Fantastic Four, you didn't do a good job reading Civil War...sure, Spider-Mans reveal was a big point that happened in the story, butm where Spider-man hasn't been in the MCU, this reveal wouldn't be a big deal at all in the movie. plus, they Civil War story is focused more on Cap and Ironman having a difference in opinion and having people choose sides, but it also stresses that neither side is right or wrong.
so as long as they can make the movie in a way where people watch the movie and some side with Cap and some side with Ironman, then it will have succeeded in bringing the essence of the movie to life...Spidey and the FF are not needed at all

This Evans trilogy and he better have all the spotlight. RDj better not steal it. Damn it's like RDj is the villan of civil war and the mcu in that Evans has become kind of the fan favorite after TWS

Yes...this movie will hit all of us right in the feels.

And I would have to laugh at anyone calling it overcrowded. Suicide Squad would be one that could be considered overcrowded, because they have to introduce so many characters. With Civil War, we already know the main players.

Not that I think Suicide Squad is overcrowded...It'll just be more difficult from a writing standpoint. Should still be a fantastic movie with the cast they have assembled so far.

Lol… I see what RDJR did there…"After you see Snowpiercer, you're like, 'I want to see a little bit of that guy."
Subliminal message to watch Chris Evans starring in "Snow Piercer"… hmmm..
I think Evans already had us at "Hello" Mr. Jr…
