Tucci has been cast as the DR responsible for the serum that turns Steve Rogers from a scrawny git into the sentinel of liberty himself, Captain America.

Here is the official press release..

Marvel Studios announced today that Oscar® nominated actor Stanley Tucci has been cast to star as Dr. Abraham Erskine in the studio’s highly anticipated movie CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER opposite Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, and Hayley Atwell. In the early comics, Dr. Erskine was a German scientist behind Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that created the Super Soldier known as Captain America. Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Tucci’s credits include JULIE & JULIA, Peter Jackson’s THE LOVELY BONES, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. He can next be seen in the upcoming comedy EASY A as well as the upcoming movie musical BURLESQUE.

In addition to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, Marvel Studios most recently released the highly anticipated sequel, IRON MAN 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, and will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including, THOR on May 6, 2011, and MARVEL STUDIOS’ THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

Tucci is represented by CAA.

Here is some back ground on Erskine..

Abraham Erskine was a scientist from the 1940s who first developed the Super-Soldier Serum, as well as the Vita-Rays designed to create an army of enhanced human beings whose physical defects and limitations would be eliminated for the USA World War II efforts.
It would be Erskine's process that transformed Clinton McIntyre into Protocide but accidentally killing McIntyre and later successfully scrawny Steve Rogers into the muscular Captain America. After getting his process to be successful with Rogers' trial run, a Nazi agent named Heinz Kruger infiltrated the top-secret military base and assassinated Erskine at Rogers' transformation presentation.
To date, nobody has ever been able to duplicate the Super Soldier Serum intact as successfully as Erskine was with Rogers 1. Others have either recreated powerful human transformation techniques similar to Erskine's including his successor Wilfred Nagel and Rogers II who became the Captain America of the 1950s, or the Power Broker whose subjects emerge with actual superhuman strength.

Thanks to the Marvel data base for the info. I think this is some great casting. Tucci is a fantastic and very underused actor imo.

Good casting.....side note: someone should do a quick article on what the frizz has been up lately with the site. Too much traffic? Too many people interested in seeing the Cap & Thor pics?

You guys need a new server...lol

Guys, the reason for the glitches is a move to a new server, but everything should be cool now. I didn't realize this article was still acting up after the site was back up and running. Anyway, Tucci rules. If you have seen The Lovely Bones you know how versatile he is.

Tucci is one of my FAVORITE actors ever!!! He single handedly made Devil Wears Prada an actually AWESOME chic flic. I never thought i'd see the day where i could find a chic flic worth watching repeatedly(well except for 4 Weddings +a Funeral and Love Actually but that's just me ;)! Do you guys realise how many brownie points i get for ASKING to watch DWP again and again??? I'm set for freaking LIFE!!! THANK YOU STANLEY!!!! You are the man :))

The only thing I've seen Evans in is the 2 FF movies. Haven't seen Losers yet. Anyway, I'm willing to reserve judgement until I see the flick. I have verrrry high expectations for this, so they better not screw it up..lol

@ Ror, thx for the update, I don't know if I missed it, but there should have been a "pardon the interruption while we move to a new server" announcement at least. Hey, I'm not complaining, over all really good job on this site guys...

Stanley Tucci is f*cking great actor!! He was great in "Beethoven", He was great in "Terminal" and He definitely was great in "The Lovely Bones"!! Nuff said! He is perfect choice as Dr. Erskine!:D

Evans is acceptable choice as Cap, but if anyone has seen Clint Eastwood´s Invictus or Paul Greengrass´s Green Zone, they know that Matt Damon would have been perfect choice for this role!:)

Just hoping that Johnston doesnt screw up this movie by adding too much colorful heroes in it. Example The Invaders could only be in cameo, if at all?
But with this kind of cast, i think that the possibility that he Fails is little? After all The Wolfman, Hidalgo, Jumanji, The Pagemaster, Honey, I shrunk the kids, The Rocketeer and Jurassic Park III, were ok action, horror and adventure movies! Well... maybe not Jurassic Park III?:/ But those all others were ok!

Horrah, I got into this article. Tucci is amazing and very versatile. He was great in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Although I've only seen Evans in comedy-esque roles, I don't hold that against him. Hanks, Keaton, and Carrey all got a start that way. I have Sunshine next in my Netflix queue, so I'll see what else he can do.

well i just logged in to comment what an AMAZING ACTOR Tucci is.. Shaman, i swear I didn´t remember that he was in Devil Wears Prada.. yeah he was FANTASTIC in there.. the scene where he is about to be promoted as Editor of the magazine in the Gala-dinner.. and all of a sudden.. he is not.. His reaction.. wow. He said "She (Meryl Streep) will compensate me.."

When that weird Hattaway girl asks him: Are you sure of that?"

--"..No." WOW

Anyway, i just saw him ALONG WITH KENNETH BRANAGH(did I write it right) in the HBO film "CONSPIRACY", about the infamous meeting during WWII in which the Nazis planned the complete anihilation of the Jews.. great performance.. it´s curious that 9 years later they both are related to this Marvel CU..
