Captain America: Civil War reaches North America on Thursday evening and has yet to open in China and Russia, but the first instalment in Marvel's highly anticipated Phase 3 slate is already breaking records in the locations it is currently playing in. Opening to a massive $202.2 million at the foreign box office, the best reviewed Marvel movie to date has had one of the biggest debuts ever.
The numbers are still pouring in from various countries, but having opening in around 63% of the overseas marketplace, a number of records have already been broken in countries like Brazil and Mexico. Current Disney estimates point to an opening around 5% behind Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it's already 26% ahead of Iron Man 3 and The Avengers, and 157% ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Those are impressive figures, and a haul of over $1 bilion is pretty much a guarantee.
Positive word of mouth and a massive opening in North America could very well make this Marvel's biggest movie yet, but it's far to soon to say for sure. Were you able to see Civil War this weekend?
