Chris Evans Reiterates His Initial Reluctance To Play Captain America!

The Captain America: The First Avenger and Fantastic Four actor reveals more about why he was at first unsure about whether to play one of Marvel's most prominent characters...

"It wasn't an easy yes. I was nervous," Evans confessed to MTV News. "I get nervous in things like this and Captain America just means a lot of this. I was in a really happy place in my life; kind of in a happy medium place in my career and Captain America just changes things and there's no 'off' switch once you walk down that road."

"There was nothing wrong with the project!"

"I love the people involved, the characters, the script, Hugo Weaving. There was nothing wrong there. It was just about the lifestyle change and whether or not I was willing to do it. But there's no turning back now. I'm just trying to make all the negatives into positives and just enjoy the ride."

i think he will do fine and with people like us i can see why he would be reluctant to take the role i mean his last superhero movie was bashed to pieces by fanboys(he was the good part).

The thing that some people criticize him for, I find to be a great character trait. He didn't jump right into taking the part. He thought about it and weighed out what it would mean to his life and how it would impact him as well as how he would need to impact the fans and movie-goers. Can't have anything but respect for that.

He'll be a brilliant Steve Rogers and I can completely understand why he was a little unsure about taking on the role. Personally, I dont think that Marvel could have chosen a better actor!

LEE: Thanks bud! He's given consistently great performances in some good (Sunshine) and bad (Fantastic Four) movies so I'm more than sure he'll do an amazing job as Captain America! He would've been a fool to turn this role down as it'll surely make him a household name!

BigBossZombie: Lol, I'm doing my best! :P

Ranger14: Great point and I completely agree! Most actors would have just seen the paycheck and signed up regardless. From what Evans is saying, it's clear he gave it some real thought.

I don't think he's good for Cap just how Bradly Cooper isn't good for Hal Jordan. But then again, I felt that way about Heath Ledger and he was an awesome Joker

invictus22: It's three weeks old but unless you watched the live feed on MTV back then, it's not old news if you've not seen it before. I cant help when they decide to distribute these but if you can do better, stop whining and start posting articles. :)

He really does give off a strong Cap impression. I have a few actors that I would have preferred in the role BUT none of which I now think would be better then Evans. I believe he will deliver the performance to glory.

These little interviews are great and all, but how about something from Hugo Weaving??? I mean, he is an AWESOME actor, and really the only thing that can save this movie - the Matrix was cool because of him (and the effects) V was good with him acting behind a mask the whole time- I want to hear more from him about Red Skull.

What has Chris Evans done or shown to you people to give you any idea that he wouldn't be able to give a great Steve Rogers/Cap?

weneedrevelation - Chris Pines cocky, brash Captain Kirk showed you he would be a great Cap A? You make as much sense as the Evans haters!

@villain001: I've often wondered the same!!! Is it an editorial decision or does it represent the intention of the authors?!!!

I suppose it is in keeping with classic comic book style; I seem to remember reading comics where nearly every sentence finished with an explanation point!!!! But you're right that, often enough, the contents of many articles on this site don't merit an exclamation point!!!! The article title possibilities are pretty funny, however!!!! For instance, I might post on how "I'm feeling the urge to drop a deuce!!!!"

invictus@ Umm...not all of us go to the MTV site for our CBM news, nor do we search the internet for news all the time. This is the first time it has been posted here, so it is new news for many of us. So....quit your bitchin'!

MTL@ So...much of your problem is with a lot of information that we were given that may or may not be speculation and rumor?

1. Who cares if they said they were going to go with an unknown and then decided not to? It happens all the time in Hollywood. I don't see how that could bother someone.

2. Funny, I don't ever recall see a confirmed final three candidate list. Speculative at best.

3. Once again, speculation and rumor.

4. Rinse and repeat.

5. Have you seen the long list of Hollywood Actors/Actresses who have played multiple superheroes? Irrelevant, as far as I am concerned.

6. It's not uncommon in the film/television industry at all. Back when I was casting talent, we would have advertisers and companies calling us requesting specific talent for the job based on their prior work...without scheduling an audition. I just had a friend who lost his job and has three other companies offering him a job based on their knowledge of the work he did in his prior position. No interview needed. There is nothing wrong with getting hired based on a solid reputation.

7. I would say it is his whole body of work and not just the job he did with the Human Torch. Many haven't seen him in movies like Sunshine and Street Kings, yet they want to associate him solely with smart-ass comedy roles. I would think Marvel checked out all his film work. Refer to last comment.

So, I see nothing unprofessional about the way it was handled.

Evans is miscast. He was nervous because he isn't suited for the role. He admitted so when he joked about it. Screw him and bring Aaron Eckhart.

I think he's perfect for Cap.
Seriously, Sunshine is one of my favorite movies - I think so many more people would embrace him had he not played the Human Torch...
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 8/10/2010, 1:14 PM
It is good that he realizes this relationship:

Playing the role of Captain America is to Comic Book Fans

As

Playing the role of Jesus is to Christians

With only mild exaggeration. That's why he was nervous. Evans will do a good job. That being said, Integrity is probably right and Hugo Weaving will dominate this film.
ManThing
ManThing - 8/10/2010, 1:18 PM
*Thumbs Up* I'm with the yay sayers! This guy will rock that part OUT!!

There's lots of things to worry about with this movie, but Evans isn't one of them.
I'm way more concerned about the slack ass director, lame costume, and what they are going to do with The Invaders. And what's with the villians?? Red Skull, Baron Zemo, AND Arnim Zola??? lol wtf?
claybo4131
claybo4131 - 8/10/2010, 1:22 PM
In a way I dont blame him on being reluctant, in a way its a life changing and career changing role. Captain America is an AMERICAN Icon and is the embodiment of America, he represents AMERICA as well, kind of like Uncle Sam. He knows there is pressure to play the role and I am sure he had to think long and hard on this.

@weneed Yes I think Chris Pine would have been a good Captain America, but One obstacle would have put that in the way, IMO there is also another one.

The main reason was when The Avengers shoots, so does Star Trek 2, and since he was already obligated to do ST2 under contract, that was well set and done.

Also it would have been weird seeing Captain Kirk and Captain Kirks late father on screen together, would have been a weird moment IMO

Kapoleon - 8/10/2010, 1:22 PM
I really don't think he's good for Cap he's more of a comedic actor his face just isnt right for Cap plus he played human torch it just isnt right but I know it really doesnt matter I guess they saw something i don't....
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 8/10/2010, 1:34 PM
Are people still bitching about this? It sounds like a broken record.

MTL: You don't like the way they went about giving the part to Evans? Really? Were you there? None of us know exactly how it happened. With his work on film already, they probably seen Cap in one of his performances. His work on Sunshine is very Steve Rogersish. There is no need having him read for a part if you have already seen him do a similar one.

capcyclopsftw
capcyclopsftw - 8/10/2010, 1:35 PM
Kapoleon - They obviously saw him in his non comedic roles that you didn't. And saying his face isn't right? Seriously? I can't even comment about that. And were you bitching when you found out Harrison Ford was Indy after being Han? There are so many instances out there where an actor plays more than one super hero in their career. Besides it's a different [frick]ing universe!
ManThing
ManThing - 8/10/2010, 2:14 PM
@ Integrity: lol I didn't explain that well.

All those characters are great, and they would be great in this movie.
But according to what we know right now, this movie will feature ALL THREE. We all know Red Skull will be in it but there have been reports that the other two will be in it too, and it looks like the vilian plate is getting a bit crowded.

These are unique classic Marvel baddies, and I don't want to see any of them get half assed done because there's no time for character development.

about the invaders in the movie there hasn't been any news about there casting huh...there already shooting so i really wonder if they'll be in this movie unless there a really small part of the movie or in the movie at all

@weneedrevelation: with you 100% on Chris Pine. Watched Star Trek again recently and all I could think while watching was what an awesome Steve Rogers he would've been. I suppose already having one "captain" gig is enough for him. Still hoping Mr. Evans will make the role his own. Oh yeah, long time lurker. First post.
