THE MARVELS Teaser Reveals Dar-Benn's Plan And The Kree's Name For Carol Danvers

Marvel Studios has debuted a new 60-second teaser for The Marvels, and it reveals more of the villainous Dar-Benn's plan, as well as the Kree's destructive nickname for Carol Danvers...

Tickets for The Marvels officially went on sale yesterday, and on the heels of a plethora of new posters and behind-the-scenes featurettes, Marvel Studios has released a new 60-second teaser for Nia DaCosta's upcoming Captain Marvel sequel.

After a recap of the events of the first film and Carol Danvers' other MCU appearances, including her showdown with Thanos from Avengers: Endgame, we see some new footage of the cosmic hero in action in The Marvels as she faces-off against Dar-Benn.

The Kree warrior clearly holds a personal grudge against Captain Marvel, who realizes that the villain is seeking revenge by targetting "the people I care about, and every place I call home." We also learn that Dar-Benn, and likely many of her people, call Danvers "The Annihilator," which obviously suggests that she has been responsible for inflicting a significant amount of destruction on the war-like alien race.

Check out the new "Prepared" spot in the player below.

We recently got confirmation that The Marvels will indeed be the shortest MCU movie yet, clicking in at just 1 hour and 45 minutes with credits. Another report indicated that it would also be one of the most modestly budgeted MCU films ($130 million), but this was later debunked. The space-set superhero flick's actual budget is closer to $220 million.

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The Marvels will begin its international rollout on November 8, and was recently granted a China release on November 10, day-and-date with North America. Can the sequel hope to replicate the success of its $1 billion predecessor? In the current box office climate, we'd say it has its work cut out!

If they had to do a sequel, it should have focused on her losing her powers due to the 'destruction' of the Infinity Stone that gave her those powers in the first place. This allows the writers to have her powers limited to give her a reason to actually work as a team. She returns to Earth in the hopes of finding a way to boost her powers, but eventually realizes that everything has its time.

You could explore the concept of legacy through the idea that via Maria helping Carol into space in the first film, Maria could have gotten exposed to radiation causing her cancer. This coupled with the blip meant that Monica was not there for Maria when she died. Carol would then have to deal with the idea that her actions resulted in the death of her friend, providing some tension between Carol and Monica. The eventual resolution to this being the two bonding over shared memories of Maria and the knowledge that Maria chose her actions to help people, standing by her ideals.

You then tie it into Ms.Marvel, she's an idealist who views Captain Marvel as the most powerful capable of defeating any villain. She's inspired, but she thinks of Carol as this person who cannot have flaws, so has to realize that Carol has made mistakes in her past. The end of this arc being that Ms.Marvel would admit that she does not admire Carol because of her powers, but because of her persistence to fight even if the odds are stacked against her and everyone is saying that she cannot do it.

The film would end with a self-sacrifice of sorts with Captain Marvel deciding to seal the mysterious space crack that we saw in the first trailer, doing so traps her on the other side. Then she'd return for Kang Dynasty/Secret Wars where it'd be revealed she was trapped in a different part of the multiverse.

Instead, we're getting them fighting discount Ronan the Accuser and just swapping places when they fight, it looks uninteresting.

@Scarilian - You should write the next 2 Avengers movies.

@Scarilian - I actually think I'm going to enjoy this movie but I'm also 100% convinced, given the run time, that the personal sides are going to be handwaved away/solved with a 30 second conversation. Big wasted opportunity considering the groundwork laid for Monica/Carol in Captain Marvel and WandVision and given the chance to do a "never meet your heroes" type thing with Kamala.

@MarvelZombie616 -
I don't think those can be salvaged unfortunately, you'd have to factor in around 70 hours of unfocused and chaotic poor quality writing and try and determine key aspects of character development and provide satisfying resolutions, while also trying to make several Kangs (A villain who is repeatedly defeated) as intimidating, memorable and unique while having them alongside countless variants of him be defeated. You also need to ensure what you are making is accessible for those who haven't seen any of the prior content, or at minimum those who have not seen the Disney+ shows because realistically most people won't have.

Let alone if you plan to include any Phase 1-3 stuff, which would be additional hours of content and trying to have them interact with new characters who are primarily defined as being the 'next' version of these mantles.

Writing a version of Avengers, Age Of Ultron, Infinity War or Endgame would be a lot easier than trying to write Kang Dynasty, Secret Wars or Avengers Forever because the foundation for the next three Avengers films is uneven and unable to support it.

@Scarilian - the infinity stones weren't destroyed, they were atomized, they still exist in the universe.

@JonC -
"the infinity stones weren't destroyed, they were atomized, they still exist in the universe."

Thanos stated they were "gone, reduced to atoms" clarifying he "used the stones to destroy the stones".

I'm not disagreeing with them still being in the universe, as per conservation of mass, I'm just using the term 'destroyed' instead of 'atomized' - they are interchangeable here.

The entire reason Thanos destroyed them was to prevent them ever being used again, this means they must no longer be capable of using their powers in the new atomized format they are in - otherwise it'd be possible to either use the atoms or reform the stones and use them or use them in atomized format.

I'm suggesting the concept that, with the stones unable to function, whatever the stones impacted ends up losing its powers. This would imply that the Infinity Stones themselves remained the source of powers for anything they interacted with through some unknown link as opposed to it just giving her a one time charge.

It'd be a way to adapt several Captain Marvel story-lines that focus around her losing her powers, in the comics during a story-line known as 'Operation: Galactic Storm' - Carol Danvers lost her connection to the white hole she drew her powers from reverting to her original Ms. Marvel powers.

I feel this would be a good way of adapting that story-line as other methods of her losing her powers such as self-doubt (Spider-man 2), Rogue (X-Men 1) or Cancer (Thor L&T) have all been adapted in some form and would feel like they are repeating aspects handled elsewhere.

Gee, I wonder what this destruction could've been. If only marvel showed us.

I saw the trailer for the first time yesterday in front of The Creator and it didn't do much for me. This teaser however makes it far more interesting. This makes it look like a personal story, whereas the trailers was just punches, explosions and Ms. Marvel fangirling

@ElvenKingSlayer - I think my experience was better because I watched it on the big screen. The story isn't anything special (even a bit messy in the beginning), but it has great score, visual style and overall atmosphere.

It also has the best CGI I've seen in a while. Probably because it's used fairly limited. It's obvious everything was shot on location.

@Oberlin4Prez -
210m after the tax write-off's, but that's not factoring in marketing and additional costs. This coupled with re-shooting the entire film twice, insurance and delays. We could be looking at a break-even of around $600m+

Which becomes worrying for Disney when if Captain Marvel 2 follows a similar diminishing returns to Black Panther 2 then it'd only be looking at making $600-$700m.

They also have Ant-Man 3 as a potential worst case scenario and the current stream of WB flops only work to further damage Superheroes as a brand in the eyes of the public.

The only benefit this film has is the lack of other films releasing which means that it's been given IMAX screens that initially belonged to Dune: Part Two.
