Here is some concept art (it won'y be the final cover apparently) for The Phantom Stranger #0..

In addition, MTV Geek caught up with Dan Didio to find out what we can expect from this first ever ongoing comic series for the character. Here is an excerpt..

Geek: Why was it important to bring back The Phantom Stranger, and why in this way?

DD: On a personal note, I really enjoy all the characters that inhabit the corners of the DC Universe. We have a lot of wonderful top line superheroes, but the ones that always excited me most are the ones that filled in the horror aspect, or the science fiction aspects of the DCU. Phantom Stranger is a character who has played through the DC Universe, not even just in the New 52, but he was a character introduced back in the ‘50s. There was always an air of mystery around him, and that’s always attracted a lot of people to him... But never made him stick as an ongoing series. That was the big challenge here, how to make him work as both a mysterious character, and as an ongoing book.

Also, do not want. The Phantom Stranger is... a stranger. We don't need an origin.

I've always had a soft spot for the B, C, and D-list characters. This sounds like it could be fun.

Apparently they're not gonna reveal too much about his origin, just a few tidbits. definitely not his actual name or anything.

This book won't fare well in the New 52. As curious as people are to learn why the New 52 "IS", these types of characters almost never have successful ongoing series that last very long when they happen to be along side colorful heroes such as DC's. It would do a lot better if Vertigo was still it's own universe. I give it 6 issues, twelve at the most.

Then again, DC still has plenty of not so successful books going on with no end planned yet. They only seem to cancel the "worst" of the bunch but still keep mediocre books alive for some reason.

As if they needed to keep 52 books published at all times or else they would implode on themselves.

@Shaman- What's up, bro? Long time, no type. Yeah, it's kind of a shame that DC can't seem to make these kind of books work for whatever reason. I agree with you about the Vertigo thing. The "52" thing was cool at first, but I feel like it's getting a little tiresome at this point. It kind of feels like DC is being a little OCD with it.

The Vertigo Phantom Stranger was something else. There's no way this is going to be anything like that.

MatchesMalone- Hey bud! Damn right it's been a while :)

Yeah, Vertigo should never have been lumped into the New52. I mean, Vertigo isn't it's own thing but Earth 2 is??? That's straight up bullshit. This character among many other B,C,D's (as you've mentionned) DESERVE justice, including The Specter, and they sure as hell won't get that within the New52. I mean, just look at how bad DC's raping the Milestone characters? Those as well deserve their own legs to stand on. Not every character fits their mold. One of my favorite characters lately has been The Shade and i enjoyed the first few issues but now it all just feels like a recycled DC formula and he isn't even IN the New52 (at least i don't think). They need to get better monkeys to manage their comics. I'm not saying Marvel's any better but both of them are a long way from being in Dynamite's league IMHO.

DukeAcureds- That's precisely my point. Hopefully it will be good but i'm not a fan of what they're doing with Swamp Thing and Animal Man, myself. I just don't see them pulling off Phantom Stranger successfully with the mold they have in mind to put him in.

"There was always an air of mystery around him, and that’s always attracted a lot of people to him"

So they got rid of that and made him Judas! Isn't that kewl???

ugh...
DukeAcureds
DukeAcureds - 6/8/2012, 10:24 AM
JohnnyK@ I know what you mean. There was always a theoretical Judas origin for the Stranger, but it was like Jim Hammond being Vision. It was never decided upon. They should have left his origins a mystery.

Forget screwing with Phantom Stranger, screwing with the Spectre is what has me pissed.

How the hell are they going to rationalize the Spectre's origin story being in Phantom Stranger?

I guess I came in too late cause all of Gusto's comments are gone now... Didn't get to enjoy the craziness with the rest of you.
