The New York Daily News has revealed that Marvel will launch Spider-Man, a new ongoing title from writer Brian Michael Bendis (Ultimate Spider-Man, All-New X-Men) and artist Sara Pichelli (Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Men) in the wake of Secret Wars. The series will star biracial teenager Miles Morales, the Spider-Man of the Ultimate Universe, who was created by the duo in 2011 after the death of Ultimate Peter Parker. "Many kids of color who when they were playing superheroes with their friends, their friends wouldn't let them be Batman or Superman because they don't look like those heroes but they could be Spider-Man because anyone could be under that mask," Bendis explains. "But now it's true. It's meant a great deal to a great many people."

The site confirms that Miles will be front and centre in the All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe (as suggested by the promo images released several weeks ago), with 616 Peter Parker serving as a mentor to the character. "
Our message has to be it's not Spider-Man with an asterisk, it's the real Spider-Man for kids of color, for adults of color and everybody else," Bendis says, reiterating Marvel's recent push to diversify their leading characters (including Jane Foster taking up the mantle of Thor, and Sam Wilson becoming Captain America). Below is promotional art for the series by Pichelli, with the first issue landing this fall. Are you excited to see Miles step up to the forefront of the Marvel U?

This is almost as bad as rumors of Marvel casting a 12 year old kid to play Spiderman.

Until we get an African American Punisher, a Hispanic Captain America, the merger of Jane Foster and Thor into Caitlyn Thor Jenner, and Dr. Strange becomes a Haitian becomes Marvel is just dicking around.

Peter mentoring Miles? I'm all for it I love both characters. @mrsotoman That's not really the same thing. Miles is his own character not Peter Parker made black.

Sounds awesome!

I'm just hoping Miles get's an improved rogues gallery.

Or just a rogues gallery period.

The white privilege in this comment section is a bit much. Peter Parker mentoring a young hero (the way that no one mentored him) has been something I've wanted to see for a long time.

Sounds like those poor kinds have some d!ck friends. My black friends never said anything about my skin color when I wanted to be Michael Jordan during our All-Star Nerf Basketball Tournaments in my parent's basement. Hell I was Lando a few times and got into a pretend fight with a girl who was pretending to be Chewbacca once trying to rescue a black Han Solo.

Actually, I've noticed more that boys and girls don't want the other to pretend to be another gender. I've noticed this when my nieces play with their cousins from Ethiopia. Everyone seems cool with a black Phineas and Ferb, but, man, if one of them suggests that there should be a girl Luke Skywalker, or a boy Disney princess, they all freak out. Kids are weird.

One too many "becomes" in my first post.
A Haitian Dr. Strange practicing voodoo with bloody chickens and goats heads...Caitlyn Thor Jenner the Asgardian...the undocumented immigrant Captain America...Angry Black Frank Castle waging war against dirty cops in Chicago...and Baltimore...and Fergusen, etc...(everywhere pretty much)...caps sidekick Bucky could be Muslim and gay to boot...Luke Cage could be a confused but passionate crime fighter from Montana that was born white but strongly identifies as Black as he fights injustice in the pacific northwest...the possibilities are endless provided ever villain be a privileged, bigoted white man. This could be great.

@MrSotoMan - "Or neither can Black Panther AKA Black Panther of the Cherokee tribe?"

Well black panthers in the US are referred to as black jaguars, so it'd be Black Jaguar of the Cherokee tribe.

@MrSotoMan I feel your frustration.

As someone who buys and sells graded comics quite frequently... I'm at the point where I think it's time to pull my comic investment completely and put that shit into something else.

Marvel has already forced my hand and made me quit collecting comics, but using comics as an investment is no longer something I care to do as it's part passion and part profit driven, and the passion is just about on 'E'.

It's all about the branding and NOTHING about the character now.

Fucck you very much, Disney.

You know what? I don't even care. We've got the real Spider-Man coming to the MCU and for me that's more important right now.

If Peter Parker was originally a black man I would love him no less. The fact is he was the Spider-Man I grew up with and is the only one I care to be under the mask. Anyone else is just waiting for it to be normal again. Peter is Spidey.

Or does anyone remember Shoc? There was a brief moment there where Peter was mentoring him in the 90's. Or the Slingers...

I had thought Peter would step in and take these guys under his wing.

Anyway, I think it's been a long time coming that Peter transition to a more mature role in his life. Not "super dark, brooding, bloody mess" mature, but the nurturing teacher that has always been part of his personality.

@MrSotoMan

Calm down man, it's going to be okay... :P

I think you're blowing this slightly out of proportion.
They honestly do make a good point with Spider-man's identity opening up a lot of possibilities for other people to be under the mask.
It's a good message, and the sort of message a lot of fans are sure to appreciate.

Miles Morales though, all jokes aside, is the perfect example of how to do new characters right. His costume is my favorite Spidey design. He is not exactly a legacy character in the sense of being a relative but doesn't insult longtime whites...people that have been white all their lives and have had their heroes to look up to suddenly lose their hero...RIP Caucasian Nick Fury...Miles is also maybe the best new character in comics since Harley Quinn and remains the best character for Bendis to write. Miles is like some sort of guilt therapy for Bendis and is the only writing of his worth reading anymore.

Spock0Clock - 6/20/2015, 10:39 PM
And yes, that was pretty much the best picture of Spidey and Shoc together. It was a brief moment.

@MrSotoMan - "No, he would be Black Panther, the only one named the Black Panther because of his mysterious ways, and because he is a superhero, you know like Spider-Gwen, sorry I'm just using Marvel Comics logic of the last 5 years, BEAR WITH ME."

What is this Marvel logic you speak of????
