COMICS: Misadventures of Adam West #9 - With Fleischer - 7-Page Preview

The Misadventures of Adam West continues with issue #9, co-written by CBM's Ed Gross, in which Adam finds himself in Generic City, where he encounters that world's supposed hero, Fleischer. The two of them go against Flatulence. A seven page preview follows.

Leon McKenzie and I had brought our comic Fleischer to Bluewater Productions, and shortly thereafter we were offered the opportunity to co-write The Mis-Adventures of Adam West, a bizarre comic in which a mystical amulet made TV's original Batman younger again, while having him move between time and space for a variety of adventures, all unfolding while he tries to figure out what's going on. Well, it occurred to us that since Adam was visiting different worlds each issue, why couldn't he plop down in the middle of Fleischer's Generic City? That's exactly what we decided to make happen in issue #9 of the series, and what follows is an excerpt that we believe serves as a solid introduction to both concepts. Hey, nibs. Truth be told, I've had a fairly successful career as an entertainment journalist, but there's always been this part of me that has a need for creative expression. Tried the Hollywood thing for many years but, despite a few small sales, never made it. I've always loved comics, so started giving writing them a try, first with comic strips and then with a longer form. Fleischer came to me one day, I collaborated with Leon McKenzie on expanding it, and have just fallen in love with the concept - especially now with some big changes coming - of what we refer to (armed to the teeth with delusions of grandeur) as the Fleischerverse.

The Misadventures of Adam West was an opportunity we couldn't turn down, and it's given us the chance to write some really diverse stories. THEN we had the chance to write issue 9 which included Fleischer, and it's the best of both worlds. I'm also working on a sci-fi fantasy comic.

Will any of these things take off? All I know is that I've got this need to try.

OldGreg, and amazingly we weren't drinking Bailey's when we wrote it. Leon and I have the mantra, "Embrace your inner moron," which is what we do when we're writing Fleischer. Thanks for the comments.

Sorry it grated on you. Obviously I have to go with what I think is funny and, hopefully, some others will enjoy it as well.

The reason for the alteration to the costume is purely copyright. No ears and no symbol takes away any copyright violation against Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox. It's the same reason that Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy could look so much like Batman in Kick-Ass and get away with it.

The comic is created in association with Adam West, so that's not a problem. Besides, the regular comic is NOT a parody - which is why Adam is reacting as bizarrely to Fleischer as any of us would.

Hold on there, fella! NOBODY said there was a profitable market for this comic. Let's just go with it being a labor of love and an opportunity for Leon and I to get our names out there.

"Supes" seems too much like the Tick...no offense...I love parodies, but that was all I kept seeing was a Tick...welll...kind of ripoff.

Sorry, Im all about creative freedom...but that was the impression I got and it kind of irked me.

Good luck all the same. :-)

@Ed & co: Great stuff, man! I have a few friends that I write comics with who love superheroes and funny sh*t, so I will definitely send them your way! I appreciate your humor for the most part, and the art style suits it well.

Everybody always says "this is too much like this story, or that character" and that kind of criticism can irk me sometimes, but I think that creativity and originality are 2 different things. Everybody has the potential for creativity, though everybody does not necessarily use it. Originality is a much harder thing in this late day and age...but not totally necessary. There can't be more than a few dozen main stories in the course of history; at some point, you have to stop trying to say something that has never been said before, and just get on with the business of telling YOUR story.

ChaosLord, it may be hard to believe, but I actually discovered The Tick after creating Fleischer, and while I had an "Oh boy" moment, I realized there's so much that's different that I'm not concerned about it.

Oxbow, thanks for the kind words. We're REALLY shaking Fleischer up beginning with issue 3, adding new team members and changing his look as well as his friend Green Latrine (who will go by the name of Crimson Canteen). Here's a shot of...The Group
