Artist J.H. Williams III has revealed the process behind the creation of his beautiful Batwoman #13 cover (set to be released this August). Below are the three main stages he went through as well as some details from the artist on each of them. Be sure to click on the link below to head on over to his site for more.

The Black and White version. Here is where I added background details not evident in the sketch. Since the composition was going to be using a mirror as I was trying to indicate in the rough version above. I realized that for this image to work and have a recognizable use of a mirror, the cover needed to have full backgrounds as a scene, otherwise the context of the mirror effect would’ve been confusing. Background details for a setting on a cover has been something I’ve tended to avoid, sticking with design elements instead to present a more symbolic idea. But ultimately that wasn’t going to work here. So backgrounds got placed in to set the mirror context. Which plays into how the color would work as well to finalize the mirror idea, as explained further below.

The color version. You’ll note that the logo/text information is placed in here at this color stage. I felt it important for the image to work from a design idea properly, the logo had to become a part of the art directly, to play up the mirror effect as needed, so I embedded it into the final in a way that there is no other version. You’ll note I digitally did a mirror effect for Batwoman rather than draw that in by hand. I felt it best to handle it that way because of the Bloody Mary part is so bold. I think it would’ve been extremely problematic to have tried drawing Batwoman mixed with Blood Mary and then be able to have multiple effects in the final color. This allowed me to keep the style used for Bloody Mary independent from everything else. So the last digital additions, the use of a background setting, and the pop color of the inset stars and star panel against the surreal quality of the idea, helped to make this cover unique from previous Batwoman covers I’ve done. So thats good, I’m always wanting the covers to do new things.

I haven't been following the series (and will never do, probably), but this guy always creates great covers. And this one's pretty crazy, IMO.

MMMM gotta love that DC hate. Everyone clutching their soapbox so fervently.

The first Batwoman arc was incredible, the current . . . not so much.

And if you think "Night Of Owls" is crappy, you clearly suffer from a low IQ.

Considering that Batwoman is a lesbian, her and Wonder Woman teaming up has some serious potential. LOL

Batman is my favorite character, but overall I've always preferred Marvel over DC. But even I have to admit, DC is doing a hell of a lot better than Marvel when it comes to comics. The only Marvel book I'm reading now is Winter Soldier, which is sad considering I used to read multiple titles. Marvel needs to take a break from the events.

So, are Batwoman (a lesbian) and Wonder Woman (an amazon) going to get it on or not?

This site is so one-sided -.- HEY! @WEARETHEWALKINGDEAD9, ANTHRAX, AND DE4DPOOL! If you hate DC so much, why are you on a DC article??? Marvel has some great stuff going on right now, but if you picked up even ONE SINGLE issue of Snyder's current run on Batman, I guarantee you wouldn't be able to call it bad

The only book I was reading from Marvel was X-23 and they cancel it. Damn Marvel!!! I think Batwoman is cool, I really like the art in her comics and she is a lesbian, which is really cool. From what I read in some of the previous comments and in other posts a lot comic book fans are a bunch of homophobic chauvinist conservatives, which is pretty sad.

How has no one pointed out that this is not the cover for Batwoman 13, but the cover for Batwoman #12? Come on, the little number #12s are all over the scans. You can verify this, oh, ANYwhere else on the internet.

Does anyone else have a problem with every DC #9 crossing over with another issue the same month as the Annuals and the second the wave? You need to buy almost every one of the 52 titles to keep up with the arcs of the various families.

@the Troll- Night of the Owls is far from the only event happening in the DCU right now, and it only involves the Bat Family, and it doesn't even include the whole Bat Family- Batwoman is not part of Night of the Owls.

Also, it is not even based around Batman, it is based around Gotham. Nightwing is closer to the center of the story than Batman is.

JHW III's draftsmanship is extraordinary. If I was king of the world I would want to give him a cathedral to design
