In all the hype surrounding the upcoming Avengers vs X-Men event over in the 616-universe, Marvel's Ultimate universe is quietly revving up for it's own colossal event. In Johnathn Hickman's "Children of Tomorrow", The Ultimates (that universes Avengers) which has the current roster of Nick Fury, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Spider-Woman, Hulk, Captain Britain and The Falcon must combat a seriously threatening Mr. Fantastic. As of Issue #5, Reed Richards and his Children of Tomorrow [an Ultimatization of Mike Carey's 'The Children of the Vault', introduced in the 'Super Novas' arc of 'X-Men] have been conquering entire cities and incorporating them into their vast network, known as The City. Spearheading that drive is Reed's belief that he has the capacity and knowledge to perfect the world and he's not going to let anyone or anything get in his way. In this process, they've taken on and destroyed the residents of Asgard, minus Thor. I think that shows just how powerful the mind of Reed Richards is, God help the 616-universe if he ever decided to go rogue.
But hope is not lost, Nick Fury has found Steve Rogers and if anyone can lead the team to victory over insurmountable odds, you have to believe that Cap can. However, Cap has recently put down his shield over guilt stemming fomr his role in the death of Ultimate Peter Parker. Fury won't have an easy task convincing the Sentinel of Liberty to take up the good-fight once again but I'm sure Cap will snap out of it when the time is right. Hickman warns however, "The thing to remember is, our mandate is to not be like the regular Marvel Universe. So if you expect Cap to pick up the shield and save the day, that would be unwise." I'm personally not buying it but time will surely tell.
Issues #5 and #6 feature work by guest artist Brandon Peterson with five page sequences by regular series artist Esad Ribic.
