COMICS: The Shocking Twist In Today's AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #698 Revealed

Dan Slott told fans that Amazing Spider-Man #698 would be a must-have, and he wasn't kidding! With the issue now on sale, a page from it is doing the rounds which reveals something that it's fair to say no one will have seen coming! WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD

If you don't want to be spoiled, stop reading now as there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD (and that's your FINAL warning). In today's Amazing Spider-Man #698, it is revealed that Doctor Octopus has somehow switched minds with Peter Parker and is now in possession of him. That of course means that Peter is trapped in Otto's dying body, a body which goes into cardiac arrest at the conclusion of the issue. An unexpected and shocking twist, although exactly how long this has been the case for remains to be seen as it is never made abundantly clear in the comic itself.

Many fans are speculating that it has been the status quo since the conclusion of "Ends of the Earth", but that doesn't make a lot of sense because it is only in this issue that we really notice the change in Peter's personality before the big reveal. With still two issues to go before #700, there's nothing to necessarily say that this means Otto Octavius will be the "Superior" Spider-Man. Regardless, are people really going to want to read a comic book with a Peter Parker possessed by the villain who killed him?! The reaction on social networking sites has been VERY mixed!

Hopefully we will get some definitive answers in Amazing Spider-Man #699. Below is a scanned page of the reveal courtesy of our friends over at Newsarama. What do you guys think about this?

I find it hard to imagine that this will be the status quo in Superior Spider-Man, but there are too many pieces on the board to make any sort of guess at this point (the golden Octobot, Norman Osborn waking up from his coma, the Jackal, Alpha, etc.).

I think it's an effective and shocking twist, but I WOULD like some answers as to when it happened because Peter only started speaking and acting differently in THIS issue. I personally found the dialogue to be heavy handed to be honest, but that's probably down to the fact I had it spoiled for me before reading so never got to experience the "WTF?" twist first hand.

Regardless, I'll wait and see what Slott comes up with (I've loved more of his work on Spider-Man than I've hated), but there's just no way Peter Parker's story can end like this...

As bad as it has gotten with DC comics over the years (and it has gotten BAD), it's times like this when I'm glad I'm not much of a Marvel fan-boy.

Marvel did say that Superior Spiderman would not be Peter Parker!!!!

This could explain why the Marvel Universe on a whole are unaware of Superior Spiderman being anyone different...if its Otto in Peters body he'd smell the same (to people like wolverine) and appear the same mind wise to psyhcics...

But this could be why MJ figures out its not Peter...as only she would know the suttle differences...

Also Superior Spidermans eyes look very Otto Octavius style i guess...

Cant imagine this being the status quo for long...

this is only a terrible idea if it remains permanent into superior spider-man. if so, light the torches. if not, then what the hell is the big deal? its a comic book drama with twist & stuff.

Don't worry, I'm sure there is some contrived explanation for all of this which will later be resolved by a deus ex machina.

Expect Peter to be Spider-Man again before TASM2 comes out.

I'm pretty sure it's not going to last more then two years. Hell we may find it it's just Ocks personality and the final revenge is that Peter is just forced to think he's Ock.

Do you think all the heroes will start to think that Spider-Man will be acting more "different and weird". I certainly hope so. Mary jane might notice something different.

I hope it's nothing stupid like aunt may or MJ can tell its not Pete because MJ knows Pete in and out regardless of his face and aunt may because she used to bump ugly a with the octo man.
So does this mean doc ock experiments on peters DNA mutating him and giving him the new look.
You know what really really sucks is that ever since clone saga every spider fan is SUPER critical of the big events in his book.
It's like the saying goes.
"You can build a hundred bridges that can unite nations but suck one dick and be known for the rest of your life as a cock sucker and not a bridge builder"

I stopped reading Amazing Spider-man after the OMD story arc. For those who still love it, that's awesome but I can't bring myself to follow it anymore.

You know what would have been more twisted? Doc Ock swiching bodies with that Gwen Stacy clone or even MJ...

Onslaught
Onslaught - 11/21/2012, 9:41 AM
No need to whine and cry prematurely. This is just Doc Ock's last ride and sets the premise for someone else doing the same thing to Parker. Thus creating Superior Spider-Man.
