Excellent Look Back At One Of MARVEL'S Most Controversial Storylines, The Raping Of MS. MARVEL

This video has been making the rounds across various media outlets and I thought I'd share it with the CBM community. It's a fascinating look at the controversial history of Ms. Marvel.

Here are two great vids from The Escapist's Bob Chipman who looks at the convoluted and in-house fighting surrounding Marvel's premiere modern female super heroine. I'll let the videos do the talking.

Interesting, eh? Sound off below with your thoughts, I'm sure you definitely have formed your own opinions following the vid.

Ms. Marvel is the name of a fictional character appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Roy Thomas and designed by artist Gene Colan, the non-powered Carol Danvers debuted as a member of the United States Air Force in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (March 1968) and as Ms. Marvel—a fusion of alien Kree and human genes—in Ms. Marvel #1 (January 1977).

Debuting in the Silver Age of comics, the character featured in a self-titled series in the late 1970s before becoming associated with superhero teams the Avengers and the X-Men. The character has also been known as Binary and Warbird at various points in her history, and has featured in other Marvel-endorsed products including video games, animated television series, and merchandise such as trading cards. In the 2000s, the increased use of her as a character eventually prompted some commentators to note that "she's now the House of Ideas' premier heroine."

That's bad.

But not AS bad as the rape of Janissa , the Widow-maker in Conan # 12!
Bone Woman, who was a witch/sorceress threw Janissa into a pit with 'the demon horde'. Yes , that's right...real demons, who repeatedly raped her over an extended period of time until she learned how to eventually fight them and win her freedom.

Man, I'm telling you the fan page was filled for months with outrage over this.

Its a succinct and well informed analysis of the storyline. As for promoting female heroes, neither Marvel or DC does women justice, but Marvel is still better at it than DC overall. At least they had the guts to make a female charactger the most powerful character in their world (i.e, Phoenix).

This is why no one can complain about the storyline of the X-Men films. It is a much more easier universe to understand than in the comic world.

I did not know that. Cool stuff, I like shit like this. With all the stuff going on in comics is easy to miss at times

I read the original storyline as a kid and didn't think much of it, but as I got older and examined American pop culture more intellectually, the clearly misogynist fantasy of the female victim falling in love with her rapist was pretty par for the course then, especially in the soap operas of the day (Luke and Laura anyone?) I read the Carol Strickland essay a few years ago and MovieBob barely scratches the surface on how SICK the storyline actually is. He also leaves out that weasel Jim Shooter and the role he played in this...but who can blame them for their mindset of the time? Let's face it: Marvel's face Stan Lee, for all of his genius, barely wrote emotionally strong female characters in the first place. Basically they all fawned and simpered over some leading male or were hidden in the background...or had their necks snapped after being knocked off a bridge.

Just watched part 1, now the "rape" part dosent really get to me cuz it dosent really sound like rape to me, its the wacky convuluted wtf? story behind it.

Being impregnating someone with urself and then coming out knowing exactly what happened? huh?

I really like this guy's view point on comics. Not that I agree with everything he says, but his opinions make sense.

Has anyone watched his Word for Nerds video? It is another really great video, check it out!

"Raping of Ms. Marvel" immediately made me think of what Rogue did to her (in a figurative sense).

She just can't get a break.
