Legendary Star-Lord #1 Comic Book Review

Marvel is putting out several new #1s to tie into the upcoming (August 1) release of their new Guardians of the Galaxy movie.  We reviewed Rocket Raccoon #1 already, and here is the review of Legendary Star-Lord #1.

Written by Sam Humphries, with art by Paco Medina and Juan Vlasco, this book serves as a good introduction to who this half-human, half-alien Star-Lord (Peter Quill) is, and bits about his personality.  This comic book clearly was designed to show non-fans who this guy is, and in that capacity, it does a good job.  We see him in a flashback as an orphaned child  who hated life on Earth after his mother died, and then we are catapulted into the future, where the adult Peter Quill is enjoying life as a space-faring rogue with a heart of gold.

As we mentioned in our review of Rocket Raccoon #1, Marvel seems to be making a conscious effort to link the Guardians with a Star Wars-like atmosphere.  I mean, we had Jawa substitutes in Rocket's book, and in Legendary Star-Lord, we see a Peter Quill-as-Han Solo character.  Given the popularity and news-worthiness of Star Wars (hint: both Marvel and the Star Wars franchise are owned by Disney), this is not a dumb move, just rather heavy-handed.

Without going too much into spoiler-land, we can say that the art by Medina and Vlasco is good.  The characters are clearly-defined, the facial expressions are good, the action sequences are active, and overall, this is a good book to look at.  The writing by Sam Humphries is pretty good as well.  The dialogue could have come from Han Solo's new Star Wars script, but overall, it was a fun read.  The interaction and dialogue between Peter Quill and his gal pal on Earth (you gotta see the panel to get that...) is pretty clever, as is the artist's rendering of this lovely lady X-Man (X-Woman?) is very good and adds a lot to both character's personas.

Overall, this was a good book to read.  It leaves us with a revelation and a cliffhanger, and we will check out and review Legendary Star-Lord #2 when it comes out. Be sure to look at our video review below to see the art and get a feel for the book.  Again, we avoid major spoilers...
