Don’t let the colorful costume fool you. Speedball, aka Robbie Baldwin, looks like a cartoon character who walked into the wrong comic. But his power is pure chaos physics, and it makes him one of the most dangerous Avengers when he’s not holding back.

His ability: kinetic energy fields. Every impact he takes gets absorbed and stored, then he releases it as concussive blasts or bounces. Every wall he hits, every punch he takes, every fall he survives – it all charges him up. The more you hit him, the stronger he gets. That’s why villains who rely on brute force lose to him. They think they’re beating him down, but they’re actually loading his weapon.

Early Speedball was all jokes. He bounced around, made quips, fought low-level crime. That’s why fans called him a “joke hero”. But then Marvel hit him with Civil War. Robbie got blamed for Stamford, the explosion that started the superhero registration act. He lost friends, got thrown in the Negative Zone prison, and came out completely changed.

From Speedball to Penance

After Stamford, Robbie became Penance. He covered himself in spikes and wires so every movement caused him pain. Why? Because his powers only activate when he feels pain. He turned trauma into fuel. That version of Speedball is terrifying – no more jokes, just pure survival and vengeance.

Even as classic Speedball, he’s no joke. He’s fought NOVA, survived the Negative Zone, and taken hits from characters way above his weight class. His bounce fields let him move in ways no other hero can. He can ricochet off buildings, dodge bullets, and hit you from angles you don’t expect. It’s not just bouncing – it’s 3D combat physics.

Why Fans Underestimate Him

Marvel branded him as comic relief for years. Bright costume, silly name, bouncy powers. So when he showed up to fight serious threats, people didn’t take him seriously. Big mistake. Kinetic energy is no joke in Marvel. Characters like MONICA RAMBEAU and CAPTAIN MARVEL use energy – Speedball uses it too, just differently.

He’s also one of the most resilient Avengers. You can’t knock him out easily because his field absorbs impact. You can’t corner him because he bounces out. And you can’t wear him down because pain makes him stronger. That’s a nightmare matchup for street-level villains and heavy hitters alike.

Bottom line
Speedball is Marvel’s most misunderstood Avenger. The jokes hide a hero who survived war, prison, and trauma, and came out tougher. He deserves more respect.

My take: 4/10
Most misunderstood Avenger. Dude’s a tank disguised as a clown.
