Stan Lee Is Currently The Highest-Grossing Movie Producer Of All Time At Domestic Box Office

You may have been expecting to see names Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, or Michael Bay to be at the top of this list, but Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee stands above them all

With the success of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Stan Lee has become the highest-grossing movie producer of all time at the domestic box office. Avengers: Age of Ultron has grossed $413 million at the domestic box office, pushing the total domestic gross of films where Stan Lee has served as a producer to $6.8 billion.

To take the top spot, Lee passed by Steven Spielberg, who has been a producer on movies with a total gross of $6.76 billion. Lee also ranks above Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy ($5.4 billion), Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige (5.3 billion), and Legendary Pictures’ Thomas Tull ($4.7 billion).

If Lee will finish the year atop the highest-grossing producers list remains to be seen, as Jurassic World will likely push Spielberg back on top in June. However, Lee could retake the lead again when Ant-Man gets released in July.

The term "producer" has never been used more loosely.

Not hating but it's known Stan has no say in the films he's involve in.

Still the will likely last until Jurassic World since the difference between Spielberg and Lee isn't a great one.

EP gets paid but Stan Lee has said he wanted no money from these films.

"I hate to admit this, but I do not share in the movie's profits," Lee told CNN.com in a recent interview. "I just share in the interviews, in the glamour, in the people saying, 'Wow, I love that movie, Stan' -- but I'm not a participant in the profits... [The executive producer credit] is an honorary title."

When asked if he would like to be making more money from the film, Lee responded, "Well, it would be nice. [Laughs] But I'm used to the way the situation is. I don't go around thinking about it. I am really very pleased that people enjoy the movie, that it's doing well, and even though I didn't film the movie myself, I seem to be getting a lot of credit for it!"

I just saw stan at the Q&A at Houston's Comicpalooza (a couple of days before the great flood).

I'm really impressed with how sharp and witty he is at his age.

What this proves is that Marvel movies of the type that Stan Lee worked for years to get created, are now worth a fortune. What Lee did is not directly comparable Spielberg, so as milestone it is not logical.

Stan lee did play a major role in promoting the idea of movies starring characters who he created. He also fought strongly for a cinematic world where characters from different CBMs could interact. So, in effect his most important contribution was in defining and promoting a brand, and creating many of the characters the brand embodies.

Steven Spielberg helped create and fund Dream Works studios, directed many of the movies he produced, and did all the things that traditional Hollywood (non-executive) producers do to create movies.

I suppose that how you make money is less important to the studios than whether you make money, and Marvel Studios and Dream Works are both happy for the contributions made by their star attractions.

If Stan Lee really is giving his name, and his ideas free of charge, then the studios are getting a real bargain. Remember some of Spielberg's pics claim to be made largely for artistic merit (the claim may be fraudulent but in principle some Spielberg movies are the sake of art), but movies that Lee was executive producer of never claimed to be for any purpose other than profit. Saying that the writer who helped create these properties is on board and helping make the movies does help profits. How much it helps, is something the studios know, but if they are getting the value of the name Stan Lee free of charge, it does not sound fair.

Stan Lee is averaging twice as much per movie, so if both people live another five years, Lee can be expected to out pace Spielberg.

I imagine it would be foolish to give too much information about personal finance because telling what you have can give clues about how to steal your money, but the information available suggests that Stan Lee is not winning the prize for biggest billionaire in Hollywood. According to estimates on the internet Spielberg is worth about 3.5 billion compared to Stan Lee's 50 million. The allegedly richest is Lucas with over 5 billion (who sold his production company along with the Star Wars brand).
