What's Humor's Place In The Marvel Cinematic Universe? Jeph Loeb Provides An Answer!

Marvel TV's executive vice president Jeph Loeb may not be involved with the big screen films, but he knows a thing or two about humor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here, he explains how humors plays a big part in shows like Jessica Jones & Daredevil!

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Marvel Television's executive vice president Jeph Loeb spoke on humor's place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel TV. However, before he began to speak, he had to clarify that he couldn't say much because of the following: "Marvel security has surrounded the building, and I plan on trying to get home tonight," Loeb jokingly said, referring to the "Marvel Snipers" joke that's been floating around for years now.

Anyhow, Loeb revealed that no matter how dark a Marvel show or film may seem, there's still humor added in the mix. "When you look at any Marvel property, our secret sauce has always been not so secret in that we believe that humor is part of it. It doesn't really matter how dark we get, and certainly people felt that Daredevil and Jessica Jones were darker than they had expected Marvel properties to go, there's still a great deal of humor in those shows." He then used Spider-Man and Daredevil as an example to explain how humor is an important element in the stories Marvel tells. "We're bringing that a man can get bitten by a radioactive spider and then go out and swing across the skyscrapers of Manhattan, or that a blind superhero can actually, somehow, use his heightened senses in order to take down those that are opposed to abiding by the law. If you're going to have that as part of it, it's always a good idea to make sure that the audience is aware that, yeah, it's funny. It helps along the way in telling the story."

Finally, Loeb spoke on the Marvel TV comedies that are supposedly in development, and revealed how him and his team would tackle something of that sort. "If we were to explore half-hour comedies, we would keep in mind what's important about Marvel, which is that it needs to feel grounded and real, and at the same time that it has that kind of rebellious quality to it," he said. " Marvel has always been sort of the bad boy of the comic book universe. I don't think that's ever going to change. I think, to be perfectly honest about it, I think we're now the sort of, the bad people, not the bad boy." What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

I actually like the humour, but I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that we're not fans of forced humour. Thor 2 had too many of these moments. Captain America 2 was, imo, a perfect balance of what Marvel should be doing.

@mancalledsting

Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 were the worse with too much humor

I hate how a movie gives us a sad and dark moment, then the next scene will be a funny moment

ALL my favorites movies are a mix of Drama and Comedy (Chaplin did this all the time). As many Directors/writers said before, because that's the nature of life. Nothing in life is 100% serious/drama or comedy. I believe that's why we feel more connected with this type of movies.

Before some of you began to complain, remember that many of the best movies of all times has a comedy/drama structure.

Some Examples:

- The Wolf of Wall Street
- One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
- Toy Story 3
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- Life Is Beautiful
- Forrest Gump
- Pulp Fiction
- Inglourious Basterds
- Django Unchained
- Fight Club
- WALL·E
- Stranger Than Fiction
- The Grand Budapest Hotel
- It's a Wonderful Life
- Woody Allen Movies

All biggests franchises has many comedies elements as well:

- Star Wars movies
- Indiana Jones movies
- Harry Potter Movies

Marvel is hitting the vast majority of movies and I love it. I Love the drama/comedy relationship. Keep the good work Marvel!

""It's just like he's saying. Humor has a place in any and all Marvel properties, and it's not just Marvel unlike what a lot of people think...unless you for some reason don't find "I'm gonna show you a magic trick TA-DA!!!!".
It's realistic. No matter how grim the situation, humor has a place in real life. Otherwise we would've committed suicide years ago.

My country is currently dealing with the worst crisis in its history, how do we deal with it? We make fun of the governments and all its [frick] ups. It's fine.
Do I find some of the humor a little overdone in certain movies? Yes. Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and AoU being perfect examples.

I actually downloaded a fan edit of Iron Man 3 a few weeks ago called "Iron Man 3 Reforged", which removes most of the cringeworthy humor and leaves only the humor that actually works...among a few other things. This fancut is my second favorite movie in the MCU.""

It's funny how some people wanna be against humor (I understand the forced humor because we don't need that) in general (Which is used I MANY different film franchises but when it's used in Marvel films, the "Usual suspects" crowds wanna make their petty noise) and want films that 100% just straight up exploit tragic events simply for fantasy entertainment just so that they can feel "Mature" and "Edgy". Sure I guess you can say "Personal taste" is involved but at the same time these people are most likely the ones who probably don't have a lot of happiness in their lives themselves.

The only times the comedic aspects were really bothering me would've been the Earth parts of Thor TDW and small parts of AOU. Iron Man 3 had its problems, but imo those weren't really ones with the humour in the movie.

I mean, I have no problem admitting that not even every joke-ish moment in my beloved GOTG worked perfectly well, but there was nothing there that hurt the overall experience for me.

"I just think he's kinda hawwt"
"Wowurgh that is a good grip you should not pick a fight with this person" (Looked like no one was even directing him in that scene lol)
"She with you?" "I thought she was with you..." *danananana*

All studios suffer from cringe worthy moments. I think the Dark Knight had a few and Green Lantern was the worst out of any cbm to date. Now don't even get me started on Amazing Spider-Cheese 2 or the Transformers movies
