  •     Here is my SPOILER filled review of 1872 #1 from Marvel written by Gerry Duggan drawn by Artist Nik Virella and colored by Lee Loughridge. If you want to go into this book SPOILER free please don't read this, I don't need anyone telling me I didn't warn them enough! To start this off let me just say that the art and tone of this book is very much a Western in the Marvel Universe, as of issue one there is no super powers or any signs of it, not to say that wont change in any later issues but as of now there's not. I'm not very familiar with Virella's art but the way he depicts this western domain called the Valley of Doom (keeping with the Secret Wars, God Doom theme) is simple and beautiful. Most of the detail is in everybody's faces as you can definitely tell the difference between all the characters without having any special suits or outfits to tell anyone apart. Some of my favorite panels in this book had to do with facial expressions. They were so spot on for the dialog. The colors by Loughridge did nothing but highlight the beauty of the art, its so subdued and pale it almost feels like a black and white but it most definitely is not. One thing I would like to point out, know one looks like there Marvel counter parts except for the Kingpin who looks pretty much exactly the same as he always looks. I chuckled the first panel he's presented in, it kind of took me out of the book for a quick second but not in a bad way cause his look very much fits into the world of the book in a great way.

  •     Now lets get into the story, there's a lot to be had here in this first issue as we meet a number of characters. There's also a few names being thrown around that make you never forget your in the Marvel Universe. Now let me point out that the Valley of Doom is a decent size map that you get to see on the first double page spread in the book, this story so far mostly takes place in the town of Timely. Its narrated by Ben Urich and hes still a reporter, we get a bit of back story and snippets of what hes been through over the years and towards the end of the book we learn there's going to be more we find out about him in the next few issues of this arc. Timely was nothing more then a water hole until gold and silver was found on it, the town then was led by none other then Wilson Fisk himself, and it sounds like he was once respected as a hero but now like normal with Fisk hes hated. Fisk is not the only one pulling the strings though Governor Roxxon is the man he answers to. The river of Timely was diverted for mining and now crossing the river is considered suicide to the locals, and that's when we are introduced to Redwolf who wants to blow the dam, to well basically better his people. Now we see Sheriff Steve Rodger's and Tony Stark who always has a drink in his hand, lol. That's when the story really opens up with lynchings and Sheriff Rodger's trying to bring law and order into the town. We get some great stuff from Stark as it seems he may have a few skeletons in his closet.

The book closes out with a great page of a few more Marvel characters who will be coming into play that should put a nice smile on some faces. There's not much to complain about with this first issue, its one of the only Secret Wars tie in's that I have read so far that begins with a map. Something that wouldn't hurt in a few other books. It's kind of a quick read but that's not exactly a bad thing as it gets right into the meat and potatoes of the story. I highly recommend giving this a shot, if you don't know much about Marvel history it shouldn't affect the overall story at all. Secret Wars so far has been great and I really feel like Marvel just let the the creators tell story's they want to tell without getting overly involved. So i'm sure this is going to be a great story. Time will tell if I'm going to be looking for more western marvel when this concludes, for now I'm all in on this. Hoped you enjoyed the review I think the next book im going to review is going to be Harrow County 1,2 and 3 by Dark Horse. Feel free to ask me about any other comics I may be reading you can find me @dickmastaflex on the twittasss!! Thanks y'all!!
