James Gunn Seemingly Addresses A Potential Exit From DC Studios Following WBD Sale Announcement

After years of speculation, it's been revealed that Warner Bros. Discovery is officially for sale. Now, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has seemingly addressed his future at the company.

Ever since Warner Bros. merged with Discovery, Inc., rumors have run rampant about a potential sale of the storied Hollywood company. The rumors started gaining traction when it was revealed that Paramount Global had submitted an offer to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery (an offer that was ultimately rejected). Soon after, sale intentions were confirmed by WBD’s board of directors.

For some, talks of a sale put into question the future of DC Studios, specifically that of co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. People wondered whether a sale would mean the executives would be forced to leave their roles, or if they’d be allowed to stay on and continue with their plans for the DC brand. Now, it appears (emphasis on "appears") James Gunn has addressed the possibility of him exiting his role in the future.

During an interview with the BobaTalks YouTube channel, Gunn was asked whether the plot threads being established in projects like Peacemaker Season 2 and Lanterns would run until the release of Man of Tomorrow in 2027, or if they'd go further than that, into future projects. Gunn replied:

"If I s-- Yes, they definitely go significantly further than Man of Tomorrow. So, now, whether or not that'll be me that's able to fulfill that promise [laughs] depends on a lot of things in life, but yeah."

On the r/DC_Cinematic subreddit, Gunn's response sparked speculation that he was trying to say "If I stay," before stopping himself. That, however, is not confirmed.

It’s worth mentioning that Gunn may not necessarily be talking about WBD’s potential sale. He could, after all, simply be commenting on the ever-changing nature of the entertainment industry. That is important to stress. James Gunn did not, in any way, say he was leaving DC Studios during this interview. From what can be interpreted from his comments, he simply alluded to the possibility of not staying on at the company, and that could be for any number of reasons that don't necessarily have to do with WBD's current situation.

Now, in the case that he was alluding to what is happening at WBD, some may wonder why Gunn may have addressed an uncertain future for himself when nothing's set in stone. To answer that possibility, it’s important to consider the culture inside a company when significant changes are in the horizon. As bystanders, we see everything from the outside, and can only go from the little pieces of information that are often strategically released by the parties involved. The people working inside the company, on the other hand, usually have a good (or at least somewhat coherent) idea of what might be in store when big shifts are in store. That is particularly true for someone in such a high position of power as Gunn. As such, it makes sense that he'd be aware of any potential risks to his position should WBD end up being sold.

Fans may be quick to position the possibility of changes at DC Studios as a negative stance on the future of the DCU, but this is simply a matter of corporate reality. When a company is sold, its new owners typically make drastic changes to its structure, and that often means introducing their own team of people, phasing out those from the previous regime. Putting excitement or hopes for the future of the DCU aside, realisitically speaking, Warner Bros. Discovery being sold does introduce the possibility of James Gunn and Peter Safran exiting their roles.

As for how likely that is, it's too early to speculate when there isn't even a firm offer in place for the company. For all we know, DC Studios will continue on as always when the time comes. All we can do at the moment is wait and see what comes next for Warner Bro. Discovery and DC Studios.

What do you think about James Gunn's comments? Do you think he and Peter Safran will stay on at DC Studios if WBD is sold? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

@TheVandalore - ah, another article taken out of context and assuming shit. He isn't going anywhere, he has talked about wanting to take a break from doing so many projects. He could do Feiges job better than him anyway. The Last time I checked, one of them only signs checks and has zero creativity.

@bobevanz - Feige worked on most Marvel movies since X-Men in 2000. He worked under Donner and Arad. He created the cinematic universe that gave birth to CBM boom and multple cinematic universes being thrown in movie space, like the ones in horror, comedy, DC and yada yada. He is the one who put Gunn on the map. Don't diss a person cause of external forces beyond his control or making a few mistakes after doing a lot of things right. Even Einstein has been proven to be wrong. No one can be right all the time.

@SpiderParker - I dont disagree but id argue that Zack Snyder put Gunn on the map. Not Feige.

First line after quote: It’s worth mentioning that Gunn may not necessarily be talking about WBD’s potential sale.

@AgentofSH1ELD - MAYBE as a writer, at a push as doubt many give much credit to James for a screenplay credit on the Dawn of the Dead reboot as most credit remains with Romero for that along with Zack as the director. If noteable writing credit was the thing I'd have thought Scooby Doo prior to it would be the first mainstream thing of note for Gunn (may not be a great film but had nearly three times the BO returns) but he wasn't making much of note tween 2004 and 2014 realy.

As a director/producer I can't think of anything Snyder related he did prior to GotG and lets be honest it isn't common for someone to REALY get on the map until they have directing/producing credits of note (folk more oft forget about behind the scenes writers).

@AgentofSH1ELD - He directed both Slither and Super befoore GOTG. Neither were huge, but they get recognized and people still regard both well.

@TheVandalore - It's going to come down to who ends up buying it.There is zero...zip...nadda chance James Gunn is running DC if Paramount ends up the buyer...zero chance.Now...as far as other buyers 2026 is going to be very big for Gunn's DCU...anyone that denies that is very naive.

@AgentofSH1ELD - Well TBH didn't even know he was any part of doing Dawn of the Dead till I checked after you mentioning Snyder, lol.

I knew he did Scooby Doo prior to that movie (which as bad as it was in many ways I STILL loved and still watch from time to time) as well as Tromeo and Juliet (which I don't think I've seen but read him mention it often as his start as a movie writer). I also knew he did Slither and Super after (but prior to GotG) which for me I felt were better films than the Dawn of the Dead remake (likely due to being original films not remakes).

So if it is on becoming a name as a writer I wouldn't have pegged a $100M BO remake of Romero's classic as being something that put him on the map for most as it wasn't a new creation film wise, just basicaly rehashing someone elses work (and for me lost a lot in the reboot from the original in that redraft process).

The fact he didn't get any BIG writing jobs on major films (as Slither and Super were both low budget on 15M and 2.5M respectively) for over 10yrs after Dawn of the Dead (26M budget) also kinda suggests it didn't elevate his name that much within the industry either. Heck he didn't have ANY film writing credits at all for four years after Super, just a few bits for TV non of which I've seen :D

I could be wrong on that score, the GotG franchise was certainly the one to realy turn him into a household name however over all prior projects I'd say.

In all of this I aint defending, or attacking Gunn, he is one who has tended to be hit and miss at time and certainly not to all tastes.

@SpiderParker - Was he alone the one that created the MCU as it is? Cause AT the time of Iron Man the Common knowledge was that the creative comitte was very importante in how the chracters were presented.

@Moriakum - did you never see the Justice League cartoon that spun out of the Batman and Superman animated shows? The movie was basically that show just in live action. Hawkgirl screams at everyone as she swoops in to smack the shit out of them. It’s nothing new at all and part of her character.

@Deklipz - Just because it's in the cartoons doesn't mean it looks good in live action. In Superman it looks atrocious.

@DocSpock - This and this again times a million. I really believe he doesn't understand comic books thus not being able to realise a version for film. Peacemaker 2 (and in many respects season 1) was a total waste of screen time, the actors time (there is no way that many of those actors actually believe in their heart of hearts that season 2 is anything to be proud of other than being satisfied with the pay check), the studio's $$ AND my time.

@IronSpider101 -

I completely disagree. I don't do that. I gave Peacemaker season 1 7.5/10. Season 2 I gave 2/10. It was a huge fall off. Viewership, critic ratings, and fan ratings all went South badly for season 2. The terrible orgy episode chased off over 1/3 of their viewers.

Yeahhhh - I have mixed feelings on it tbh. On one hand, it’s nice to see someone who understands comics more than the average studio head, but on the other hand he makes cringe shit sometimes with his writing (specifically his awful juvenile humor) so idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Gunn dissed the people who loved Henry Cavill...HALF the fan base...then his movies & shows can't attract the casual fan cuz his stories & costumes suck. He NEVER made DC any profit from , Suicide Squad, Flash, Blue Beetle, his corny monster cartoon, Peacemaker & Superman. NOBODY wants his vision except for his SMALL FAN BASE. NUMBERS DONT LIE! Zack will be back to do some ELSE WORLDS DC is som capacity & those who hate on him will pee their pants😂😂😂😂 We told y'all WALLETS CLOSED!!!

twistedcastles - 10/23/2025, 2:47 AM
@mck13 - Context is important
-Suicide Squad premiered dring covid and was released day and date on HBO Max ( he wasn't the studio head then )
-Flash was not a film he made , he just said it was good -it's an old regime film
-Blue Beetle ( old regime film he didnt commission )

-Creature Commandos is a streaming series , typically streaming series make money by either keeping people subscribed or getting new subs
-Peacemaker is a niche not expensive tv show which seems to have a small loyal audience

-Superman definetely turned a profit
why?
It made 615 million at the box office on a 225 million dollar budget, it's estimated to have made a 125 million box office profit from theatres

that box office doesnt take into account merchandise costs e.t.c..., the subscribers they also get from it getting released on HBO Max or VOD sales and rentals

Zack Snyder's fans didnt show up for Cavill's Black Adam cameo so they only have themselves to blame for this

Zacks films were too dark for kids so I cant see those being popular, Zack also seem to make beautiful films visually but the writing is his weakest point

the sequel for Superman will likely do better financially

@centaur - There is no "thinking" with that...WB is selling they are trying to raise the stock by next summer so they can get higher bids and accept an offer by the end of the summer. It's going to be sold to someone by the end of 2026...then you have to go throw the process of the government so by 2028 WB will under a new owner.

Ugh. At this point, I'm just getting tired. The only reason to get rid of Gunn is if some new batch of suits want to soft reboot into yet *another* new vision for DC, and ffs WB, there's a limit to how many times I can invest in this nonsense. I don't care if it's Gunn, but can we just commit to a vision already so that we can finally get past the tired-ass "dawn of the Justice League" and actually get to Justice League adventures?

I wish something would be allowed to play out rather then cut prematurely regardless of how feel about this universe so far.
